After I errantly deleting the book I had been working on, like a possessed demon, I started a new one from scratch last night — banged out 3,000 words before I went to bed, which was like an hour ago. I’m pretty sure my lost version was complete shit compared to this one, which has a much lighter tone to it, less preachy, and keeps my omnipresent narration less biased and intrusive.
If you’re wondering if I have any shame, whatsoever, about loafing about the house on this fine day, heading back to catch some lazy Zs while the rest of America toils away at work — the answer is not anymore. Long ago, I was self conscious about working from home — especially when this one asshole client from NYC would introduce me to colleagues by saying “hey this is Fly — he works from home, in his pajamas and slippers.” You’d be pleased to know that I ended up losing this gent ~$100k. He should’ve been nicer.

I spent the last eight years or so of my law practice working from home. I had a dedicated 200 sq ft. home back in the woods (lived on 3 acres of woods and orange groves) and had a staff of 3-4 working from their homes (trusted older employees). I had mostly corporate clients who had offices out of state and never saw me except when I was a speaker at various conventions.
I would see the kids off to school and make the dinners. I also picked up my son from school and dropped him off at a golf course (sometimes I would stay with him- he ended up with 13 full ride college golf scholarships). I also took time out to caddy for him at various amateur tournaments or travel with him out of town.
Best time of my life.
