I have a habit of cleaning my computer of all files, because I do not like looking at a cluttered screen. More than that, for some reason, I do not like knowing there is trash in my trash bin.
You see where this is going.
For the first time in my life, I felt really good, as well as motivated, to tell the tale of the nascency of the dot com bubble, through my eyes. I was writing strong, with precision, throughly researched from the years of copious notes and records I had saved. I sifted through countless articles from that era, making sure my narrative fit the exact dates.
I LOST THE ENTIRE STORY, ALL 10,000 WORDS.
How?
New computer…never hooked into time machine for backups…fucked.

I think there are paid applications that retrieve deleted files
Correct. And they cost a fortune. Bummer,Dr Fly.
Some are free (see below) with limitations on size/number of files retrievec
You might get lucky. Most modern software autosaves:
http://www.robertyale.com/blog/2011/3/2/find-lost-files-when-autosave-fails-in-microsoft-word.html
Alternatively, if it hasn’t been overwritten, you can undelete from your trash can:
MiniTool Power Data Recovery
Glary Undelete
Pandora recovery
The key is to
1) STOP USING THE DRIVE YOU SAVE THE FILE TO
2) Remove the hard rive
3) Get an external hard drive case for said hardrive
4) Use Undelete software isntalled on a 2nd machine on the 1st machine’s hard drive
Good Luck!
Thanks lads, but fuck it. I cannot be chastened by looking for ways to undo my stupidity. I’ll rewrite it, better than before. I already have a better beginning in mind. This might be a blessing.
You’ll be amazed at how quickly you get it down and yes, it will be better.
In future, as an additional back up, email the doc to a gmail account.
“Trump Supporters” Make no mistake.
First drafts always blow. Rewrite that shit dipped in fucking gold playa I would expect no less. Now go buy your self a fucken USB you pud.
Stephen King once described his Waterman fountain pen as “the world’s finest word processor.” He started writing longhand when sitting at a computer became too painful (post car accident). He found the act of using a fountain pen forced him to slow down and think about each word. King discusses this method in the above 10-minute interview from 2001, which was recorded during his press rounds for Dreamcatcher.
That sucks. Sorry to hear. Sounds like a potential great read. Hope some of it streams back from your bio-memory.
Wow, hurricanes, earthquakes and mass shootings…now this.
This reminds me of Leo Laporte back in the days on one of his shows on ZDTV, ending it with the phrase: “believe in technology but always do a backup”.
Well could be worse. The stories floating around of some poor geekbag who threw away a shitload of Shitcoins on some hard drive, or ID10T’s who deleted their private keys to the KoinKastle – are legion. And people are STILL searching for Hemingways lost manuscripts (https://lostmanuscripts.com/2010/07/31/hemingways-lost-suitcase/). Get out another stub of a pencil, find a quiet cafe in Paris, and start in again. Helps to get up at 4AM (Dan Brown or Balzac) and sharpen your pencil or quill.
I’m devastated too but that’s because I bought way too much fizz
So sorry to hear boss. Same thing happened to me in Barbados. Was watching a sunrise, writing into Google’s ‘Note’ app and as soon as I closed it…gone
