A visibly disappointed Paul Ryan took questions today, after failing to get a consensus for his healthcare bill — which received acrimonious opposition in the GOP’s ‘Freedom Caucus.’
Ryan said Obamacare architects might be happy now, but they won’t be after seeing how it devolves into failure.
“We were doing architects of Obama a favor. By passing this law before it gets even worse. I guess that favor is not gonna be given to them and it’s gonna get worse.”
Over a third of the counties in America have just 1 plan left. For now, Obamacare is ‘the law of the land for the foreseeable future.’
Moving on, Ryan said they want to tackle easier aspects of the agenda, such as securing the border, rebuilding the military, infrastructure and tax reform.
I suppose this can be construed as bullish for healthcare stocks and also infrastructure and tax reform plays. With healthcare in the rearview mirror, President Trump can aggressively pursue other issues more central to his agenda, such as border control, tax reform, trade and infrastructure.

The problem is, with healthy people paying significantly more for even worse plans with insane deductibles means they wont be healthy for long. Many of them are now forced to play roulette with their health and only go to the doctor if they judge their condition as serious enough. Of course, they really arent in any position to judge that. In the end, the numbers of healthy people will only get smaller until Obamacare collapses and then everyone suffers, including the 26M celebrating today.

Solutions need to be found that control costs rather than simply provide health insurance.
If medical care and drug costs could be moderated or even decreased, the insurance problem would largely take care of itself. Obamacare does virtually nothing to bring down costs.
Start with mandatory basic physicals for everyone with frequency based on age and risk.
Incentivize at risk individuals to change life style habits and choices focusing on the big 4; alcohol, tobacco, drugs and weight.
Penalize those who do not change or modify lifestyle. If you’re 5’6″, weigh 230, drink a case or two a week, your “contribution” will be larger than someone of the same height, weighs 165 and drinks a case or two over the course of a summer.
The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”…still and always will be true.
Stick with the plan that everyone must have/buy health insurance but eliminate plan levels. Everyone gets the same.
Open the national market to all players. No protected or exclusive areas. All insurers must play in all markets. All healthcare providers must accept every insurer.
Streamline the drug approval process and gene based therapy. If someone is dying of a fatal disease, by all means allow them to participate in a trial of an unproven drug or method. They may benefit themselves or indirectly benefit thousands of others by proving or disproving a new treatment. If they die from it, that was their choice and they knew the risk going in. They were going to die in any event.
None of us are any less terminal than the next guy realistically.
Give drug manufacturers 1 year to develop proposals to lower the cost of bringing new drugs to market by 50% on their own. If they fail, cap their profit margins.
