I am politically indifferent. However, I do lean to the right because the left is filled with a bunch of pussies. That being said, for the most part, I believe the republicans are a reprehensible group and should be disbanded as an organization. However, regarding the debt ceiling, they are 100% correct.
Like it or not, they were elected by their constituents to represent a mandate. This mandate states: “fuck big government and buying shit we can’t afford.” Again, if you are a democrat, you must respect these wishes. Since when is it a good idea to redistribute wealth from rich guy in a jet to some smelly homeless guy with a fucking heroin needle stuck in his neck? I want you to tell me why we should raise taxes in order to balance the budget, without emotion or ideology. Give me the path to prosperity, not what is fair in your eyes.
At first, I was against the GOP for playing politics with the debt ceiling. Then it dawned on me, if not now then when? Right now is as good a time as any to make a stand and tell the dicksuckers in Washington they can’t keep spending money on all sorts of brainless shit and get away with it. Just because we raised the debt ceiling in the past doesn’t make it right now.
I honestly believe the GOP is trying to save this country from damnation. Without some sort of fiscal discipline, coupled with easy taxes, we will not survive the decade whole. What they need to do is encourage businesses to expand by easing regulations and taxes. All of the waste and corruption is choking this country dry.
None of the cuts being made will have a major impact on GDP, since all of the entitlements are fucking retarded anyway. If it was up to me, I’d slash defense spending by half too. However, that would get me “Kennedy’d” or “Lincoln’d.”
One stone at a time.

The president was also elected with a mandate, and they didn’t let him do shit, so the democrats shouldn’t let the republicans mandate matter either..and that’s why we are in this stalemate haha
But I think it’s fair to say the President’s plans suck, so far. In light of the euro crisis, the responsible thing to do is stop the bleeding now before the bond vigilantes get around to us, no?
97-0…That was the vote against Obama’s plan……
BTW, how long did they have to get this crap done until now?
dicksuckers & goatfuckers….those are the political parties we have…dicksuckers and goatfuckers……
Really good Forbes article with Lacy Hunt, Fly…
http://blogs.forbes.com/investor/2011/07/25/treasury-downgrade-isnt-worth-worrying-about-long-term-deficits-are/
Didn’t Obama and the dems have a full majority in 2008-2010? Thus the repubs could not stand in the way of anything?
@ gap, they still managed too , recall health care, Obama got dog crap compared to what he actually wanted..fly is right..democrats are pussies..but republicans have no morals..pick your poisen
What was Obama’s mandate? Change? Hope? A child’s theme song?
His most endearing quality to Americans was not being President George Bush. For the talk of change, the country really wanted a change to a static country, not sweeping new legislation and agencies. They wanted to change backward to before the attacks.
That’s not a mandate. It’s nostalgia.
The people have spoken. You Sir are the Godfather of Gay.
You know that shit is funny, even though you’re mad at me right now. Lol
In 1963,? President John Kennedy wanted an end to the Federal Reserve System (central banking in the US), which had a strangle-hold on the United States and virtually the world. By a simple stroke of the pen, President Kennedy dismissed the Federal Resene System and ordered the U.S. gubment to restore its Constitutional-mandate of controlling the money. President Kennedy was dead three weeks later. When President Lyndon Johnson took office, he immediately rescinded Kennedy’s order restoring the Federal Reserve.
And that’s why we are at this place, today.
Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1802:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by? inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”
Politically indifferent, my ass. I think you need to decide if you just love the republicans or really love them.
Pussies they may be. But that is not a reason to exclude anything. So what if they don’t charge right in? Maybe a calmer approach is better suited to some situations.
“Since when is it a good idea to redistribute wealth from rich guy in a jet to some smelly homeless guy with a fucking heroin needle stuck in his neck?” How fucking stupid are you? If you want welfare reform, then argue that. If you want to let the homeless die of hunger, then well, argue that. But fair taxes on the rich could destroy our debt. It could save huge amounts of trouble. Yes, we should raise taxes. On everyone. Because its the responsible thing to do. Cut government, too. That’s fine. There’s plenty of deficit to go around! Too much, actually. Half-solutions aren’t going to cut it.
Listen, dumbass… the money has been spent. Blame Obama’s stimulus, blame Bush’s wars, it doesn’t matter. It’s gone, dipshit. We need to pay our bills. Declaring bankruptcy isn’t going to help anyone.
“All of the entitlements are fucking retarded.” Really? Social Security, Medicare… all of that? The stuff that people dearly need and depend on… that’s retarded? Killing hobos is bad enough, cocksucker, but old people is where I draw the line.
This kind of stupidity is what sinks our country deeper in the shit.
This is getting interesting.
Speaker Boner was using some fighting words.
Go TZA
The game will continue until August 2 at midnight. That is when this all gets taken care of. And the taxing and spending will continue from there.
There will be no deal.
Sure there will. When the PPT flags 2.5x.. Deal is imminent.
Gotta love how American Politics is one big soap opera where fools are glamourized on tv to the amazement of the masses.
No one gives a shit about Canadian politics, so I guess you must feel lucky about that no?
We just pretend to be less bias towards the rich and cover it up with plenty of sorrys and ehs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUE6Sl79rw8
It is more relaxing. Though whatever shitstorm American debt-deleveraging causes will splash across the 49th quite effectively too.
Hope wants to raise the debt ceiling to February. We will do this dance again.
Stick to stocks Fly man. You are too smart and witty to get pulled into GOP talking points.
That’s disingenuous of you to say that. This has everything to do with stocks. We are not debating abortion here.
Next, the paid-for Marxist sock puppets will be suggesting you are crazy for discussing factual information they wish no one knew about.
I’ve been hearing a lot lately about how the Department of Social Services is runnng out of money.
Do you know why it is running out of money?
Because people have figured out that if 1.) They can get their child classified with a disability through the child’s school district, then they can 2.) Apply for disability compensation, and then 3) collect a nice monthly check based on the child’s disability.
I spoke to claims representatives ALL THE TIME in the state of New York who tell me families are flooding them with 5 or 6 applications in an effort to receive this disability money. And, if the child’s school district doesn’t fill out the paperwork (it’s like 10 pages long and takes forever), then the taxpayer must foot the bill for DSS to pay someone to asses the child. It is a ripoff and a joke. It is people finding a way to rip off the government and the taxpayer.
A lot of people don’t want to be great anymore. They just want to get by.
I see patients everyday 20-30 years old on permanent disability because they’re obese.
They’re covered by medicaid and receive a monthly check from social security.
People on disability get more than both the food stamp and welfare program combined. Again our country is all for welfare for the rich ( bank baillout, corporate farm subsidies, defense contracts, etc.. ) but cringe at the thought other forms of it. Republicans are really very silly…
Do you guys really think that people with real disabilities do not deserve any social income? Are you fucking kidding me? There are many many people with real disabilities that do not have the option to work hard for greatness due the disability. News flash: Most are born that way, nor did they choose that path.
Any society that does not take care of it’s weakest members is destined for disaster. There will always be low lifes that scam the system. No matter what.
Does this mean that people that are truely disabled deserve to wander the streets for food so you guys can get rid of the 10% scamming the system?
We should be proud to take care of these people.
Well said sir. Everyone wants to focus on the scammers when their are people out there that truely need these things to get by, Just once i’d like to see these irrational people get what they want just so they can see the damage they can do.
Deserve? Entitled?
Hey turd-head, I wonder if you want my fucking disability check that I get for having my neck broken and ending up in a chair for life? I can easily life without it as I AM A RICH ASS REPUBLICAN! Thing is – I paid for the dam coverage when I sent in my self employment tax each year.
I guess you shouldn’t balance a fucking fridge on your head, bitch.
Who cares, govt only has role to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for common defense, promote general welfare and secure blessings of liberty. Not provide for all you assholes who balanced a fridge on your head! Why don you go pillage Canada of their medicalcoverage and leave America to be the land of opportunity not pity. America is #1 in charitable contributions so I’m sure if the govt wasn’t involved people would help. Or else start an online business and quit feeling sorry for yourself and act like a capable human being which I’m sure you are… Broken neck or not. Just not capable of trying to catch a falling piano with your head. Jokes aside my condolances, but we aren’t saying people that need it shouldn’t get disability, but people that apply because they are fat. Also, medical costs are ludicrously high because of insurance and govt funding. There would never be such high demand to create those prices or such high wages to pay off the high debts for medical school loans if the govt backed on up and didn’t try to balance the Washington monument on their faces.
I take my last statement back I’m a little drunk!
Funny you mention that because I was thinking of the idea floating around of taking obese children away from their parents. Obesity is prevalent among children of lower socioeconomic status. Now tell me, you take these kids from their parents, who pays for that? I’m sorry but we spend so much money on trying to help the poor AFTER their problems become pronounced instead of trying to prevent problems through education.
Clearly it would be easier to just sterilize the poor and unsightly.
Big-time savings. Ever see soylent green? That too. /sarc
You should substitute low-fat cheese on their cheesefries.
And I used to think you hung out all day playing Pinehurst No. 2.
The Fly is correct “A lot of people don’t want to be great anymore. They just want to get by” without doing whole lot. The well is running dry folks.
All true Flyaway.
They are dead wrong about the need to balance the budget, the importance of deficits, and how the economy and monetary systems work. Ignorance will murder us all. I imagine, as I read blobs on the web, packs of rabid people with pitchforks preparing to assault Mary lou for being a witch.
Later, after killing millions, people realize there weren’t ever witches and it was all much to do about nothing….
Grandchildren sit around and half laugh, half lament their ‘”austrian school” granddad and the 80us people he burned alive.
They are right about big govt. And taxesI etc. No need to keep it big, no need to raise taxes. Payroll tax elimination for all should more or less do the trick.
Go to pragcap.com and read blobs “understanding modern monetary…”
Or just start a bonfire, eat some argot and shrooms, and grab those pitchforks. Reduce possible savings and aggregate demand into a debt related recession. Go team
Are you seriously condoning waste and corruption because we print our own money? How about getting this economy started again by stimulating the right parts of business?
Fly, You are so wrong on this it’s sad. The problem is a lack of demand. PERIOD. Krugman and what few Keynesians remain are correct. Businesses won’t hire without demand.
I usually like what you have to write Boo Boo, but if Keynes was right, I should make a joint account with my kids, and max out the credit-card to spend our way to prosperity.
Demand is unlimited.
The problem is a lack of ability to PAY for anything, coupled with the fact that we don’t MAKE anything in this country anymore. Keynesian deficit spending will do nothing but juice the Chinese economy and line the pockets of the oil exporters.
we still make lightbulbs and automobiles and so on just like in the roaring 20s. And iphones… But the populations has grown and mass production is about robots, machines and computers replacing the need for workers without enough employers stepping up to the plate in place.
Har har har, you vey funny!
Last I checked, lightbulbs are being outlawed, and CFLs and iphones are made in China, and gubmint handouts are the only reason two of the three car companies are still in business.
krugman is never right… on anything… not in the “real world” anyways.
Good god. You may have jumped the shark tonight.
Taxes can and must eventually be raised, along with substantial spending cuts and austerity, to have any hope of correcting the problem. I tend to lean more to the fiscally conservative side as well, but these fucking people are wackos, and the only people whose best interest they have at heart is their very own.
The Republicans currently represent a minority control of the elected government, and yet they are basically putting a gun to everyone’s head and saying “fuck you, do what i say OR you all take a bullet to the brain.” If they go through with what they are threatening, it will be the biggest act of political suicide witnessed in modern politics (and a fiscal and economic disaster for the US that may take decades to recover from).
I cannot believe you just said “jumped the shark.” Fucking Fonzi, really?
Taxes DO NOT have to go up. They are high enough.
Oh, and you’re being a drama queen about the whole decades to recover bit.
Yeah, I did improvise that bit. 😉
On that note, I’m going to bed before I expend any more energy on this topic. No investment has less return than deliberating with folks about politics.
The important thing to rememner in all this mess is that my short dollar trades are going apeshit to the upside. Owning swiss francs is turning out to possibly be the best trade I’ve ever made.
Toodles.
sleep tight
Because they are fiscally conservative over there.
..and they are the world criminals bankers.
We are downgraded by the middle of August – mREIT’s, in said event, will burn.
Taxes on the rich gotta be done in order to dig outta this.
The whole “the economy will crash without low taxes” arguement is a crock. The rich have had the lowest tax rates in history and the economy still crashed.
People need to be realistic about this mess. Spending also must be cut but it’s going to take revenue increases and spending cuts to save this cesspool we call the USA.
I simply do not see it your way. Taking money from me, per se, and putting it into Medicare doesn’t help the economy. Government does not create jobs, I do, per se.
If you want to cut something, slash defense spending by $500 billion per year and stay the fuck out of people’s pockets.
Defense can’t be cut. We need to pump as much money as possible into boeing, lockheed, and the likes; especially given all the Topgun reminiscent dogfights we get into with the taliban.
ROFL
The money they take from you doesn’t go to Medicare. It is specifically channeled to Pelosi’s retirement and the French embassy.
Slash defense spending by $500 billion per year sound good to me. Why that is not in any party’s plan?
Lowest tax rates in history my ass. There were 0 taxes in this country when we founded it. Then up until 1940 we had less than 5% of the population paying taxes. You think this country just accidentally became the richest in history?
Boehner’s case was stronger than Obama’s!
Cut spending, no new taxes!
Both parties are trying to set themselves up for the best possible outcome regarding the next presedential election.
Obama will eventually have to cave in to the Republican’s Debt Plan.
That decision will ultimately seal Obama’s fate!
That is some of the dumbest fuckin shit I have ever heard! Time to make someone accountable for all this spending. Time to put a cap on their credit card limit it’s out of control
Government needs to get a lot smaller, period.
They suck.
Correct.
Get more people working and revenues will increase. The thousands of pages of regulations including Obama Care and the Dodd-Frank mess have to be unwound for this country to begin hiring again.
The only tax problem I see is the one where half the country aren’t paying ANY. Talk about no skin in the game.
No, until the government proves they can be fiscally responsible I see no need in giving them more money to spend.
Once they prove that they have made responsible cuts then they can come ask for more money to spend.
Speaking of Frank……..his butt should be smeared with sow in heat hormones and he should be locked in a breeding crate with a 900 pound brood boar.
Have you ever seen a pigs WNR? The most amazing thing about it is not that it’s 18″ long but rather that it shaped like a corkscrew!
On second thought Bawney would probably enjoy it…………..scratch that…
I agree with you there Le Fly.
Fuck DC
How about Soviet commune-style “smaller,” where we grow our own food and pay high taxes and report to a regional governing body that doesn’t give a crap about us except that we continue to pay? I hope that’s not what you had in mind…
It appears to me that uneducated, paranoid corn-pones have derailed the political stability of the Excited States of America. ( Read the comment section of ” tea party patriots” website). When the shit hit the fan in 08′ I knew the Republicans would blame the Dems for the bills being racked up at the time, even though the implosion occurred on their watch.Exact same shit happens in this country,(Canada, albeit no one gives a shit about it Fly, agreed.) Liberal Party runs surpluses (like Clinton) , Conservatives gain power and blow the wad yet blame the Liberals. Idiots beleive the rhetoric; rinse and repeat.
I visited Manhattan last September, and will again this September, and I am awestruck by the wealth and power that America’s greatest city projects. What impresses me th most , though, is the evidence EVERYWHERE, of wealthy New Yorkers contributing to the betterment of fellow citizens: the clock at the zoo in Central Park, The garden in Central Park ( name of which escapes me presently, but on the east side, 70’s ish) that is maintained by an endowment from a couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary,to name only a few examples. Although these contributions occured many years ago, they symbolize the greatness that is America; the people who became rich also gave something back. I was in Kalispell Montana this spring and while touring the town, (pop. 20000), noticed a plaque on the beautiful library building, that mentioned it was built using a grant from Andrew Carnegie, whose name was inscribed in the sandstone archway above the entry. This is the America that I have seen and so admire and respect, and it truly saddens me to see this great country so stubbornly destroying itself.
America was built upon Freedom not bullshit monuments.
The man just penned an eloquent and sophisticated response and you counter with freedom fries?
BRING YOUR A GAME.
Your vote for “eloquent” in 2008 got you a long way didn’t it.
Nice to see you flip with the wind.
Man of principle or man of bullshit?
I never voted for Obama, but against Mccain. Big difference.
WEAK
nice post and agreed.
Get your head out of your ass. Go visit the parts of New York City that don’t consist of downtown and midtown, that actually have a borough name that does not equal Manhattan. This city is a cesspool of corruption and low expectations. We spend more money than Bernanke can drop from his helicopter and get the least return for our dollar. We’re beholden to eighty years of machine politics and the inside deal. The rich have their power brokers, the poor theirs, and the rest of us get squeezed in the middle until we can no longer take it and leave. Our city stands as a monument to the pure evil of socialism gone awry in cooperation with crony capitalism. I think we used to call that fascism, but no one wants to deal with the reality of words and their meaning anymore. The country is bankrupt, we have stolen countless wealth from unborn generations and squandered it. The math will correct itself, and if we’re not careful, it will do so on others terms, not our own. For all their ineptitude and the fiscal disaster of the Bush presidency, at least the current lot in Congress is attempting to do something. That stands in stark contrast to the ‘hope and change’ that for two years did nothing, and now stands there and lectures us on three ring circuses that he is in fact the conductor of. Maybe at some point he’ll realize he’s President of the United States, and will learn to lead, instead of just pointing fingers and making excuses.
(That coincidentally was not directed at Dr. Fly!) While we have been the lucky millions among billions that have benefited from the great generations that have preceded us the same rules apply as they do in the market, past results are not indicative of future performance.
I agree with your comment.
too bad there aren’t any good books (other than a few in the sciences section) in US libraries.
beautiful.
The Democrat constituents are useful idiots, nothing more and nothing less.
Incidentally, whoever “down thumbs” this comment is himself the Godfather of Gay.
Interesting to see those who willingly label themselves “Godfather of Gay.”
Fuck everyone on this thread
Question: who has more to lose from a US default, the rich or the poor?
Republicans are risking dollars to keep nickles… If the republicans were as smart as they think they are they would have agree to the tax hike fast just so not to have the US gov. look dysfunctional explained that to their constituents and promised tax cuts when they took the White House in 2012.
I’m sure every one here knows how markets work, it’s nearly to the point where a ceiling raise won’t even help because once the markets get shook it’s a wrap. Bond vigilantes don’t just come, they need for you to fuck up and get ppl scared then they pounce. they’re like hyenas, they only attack the weak and wounded. So if bond markets show any real fear it could lead to rates so high that we can’t pay no matter how high we raise the ceiling because we can only raise it so much and still have the markets believe we can pay it….
It’s all good now because no one thinks we will default, but let enough ppl get scared and it’s over….. Back to my question, who has more to lose? I say the rich… as the poor are fucked up already. the junkies and invalids get by now by robbing each other, but once no one has any money where do you think they’ll turn? you guessed it, the rich! and you can buy all the guns you want because you have to go to sleep! Crack heads can stay up indefinitely.
And that’s not even mentioning the fact that if rates run a muck the rich will lose a hell of a lot more as their assets tank than any tax hike would have taken… No?
As traders we all know that fee’s are a part of the game just like loses, we except those fee’s for orderly markets in return, republicans should except giving up the bush tax cuts for an orderly country in return.
Maybe they are trying to do the right thing?
I know it’s a long shot. However, I happen to agree with their plan.
i hear ya, but the right thing is what helps America most. @ this time this doesn’t help America. The world is giving us side eyes right now because we have to fight over every little thing. I’m not for higher taxes but i’d give up the bush tax cuts to see America in better physical condition….. it’s not about republicans or Dems, it’s about America and this is the absolute worst time for America to be devided to the point that we drive off a cliff to prove a point. Obama agreed to deep cuts to entitilements so why can’t they agree to giving up the tax cuts? especially after their leader Norquist said that wouldn’t be a tax hike? I’ll tell you why, because they want to make sure Obama presidency is a failure. And lets not forget that if Obama wouldn’t have done the stimulus the rich would be a lot less richer…. 700 billion less richer.
The only real republican left is Ron Paul…The rest of these basterds have no real problem with big government, if they did they would have voted against the stimulus.. both of them and let the free market sort it out
Soolebop you made good points.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said today that “No rational analysis says that we can begin to reduce the size of the Federal deficit without a combination of cutting spending and raising revenues.” I think he is right.
I don’t like to pay high taxes but I do see the need to pay for a healthy society and living environment. The rich in Indonesia pay very little taxes. Yes they get to be super wealthy and live like royals – except many of them also live constantly in fears of kidnapping and robbery, not able to go anywhere without body guards…
That’s running scared, but you may be correct.
Soolebop,
You are missing what is really at play here. You say “Republicans are risking dollars to keep nickles” the opposite is actually the case. They are risking billions today to save untold trillions in the future. If we act like cowards and decide the next generation can clean up our mess the situation will become exponentially worse. That is the way debt and interest works. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of math knows this is just getting worse every day we do nothing.
To balance the budget and stop the deficit spending – all slices of the pie should get an equal amount cut.
Yep. I said it.
Take the appropriate percentage. (whatever that number may be….3% ,5% ,6.345%…whatever.)
And slice that amount from each and every section of the budget.
Until we are balanced and there is no more deficit spending.
All programs and “slices of the pie” are important. (although many will disagree).
My point being that a reasonable argument can be made for many Democratic initiatives and many Republican initiatives. (ie: A child’s education is important. Defense spending is important.)
Both sides are at fault for the mess we are in.
Man’s own greed is responsible for the mess we are in. (greed is good…but egregious greed is dangerous for the whole. Even the most egregious greedee of all.)
Slice an equal amount from each section of the overall pie.
Starting with Congressional salaries as an act of good faith. And ending with medicare..until we are balanced and there is no more deficit.
Ease the tax code in many areas. (payroll tax for one to encourage hiring.)
However I would suspect that this would not matter to much either as many businesses would continue to hoard the excess cash as they continue to see a “lack of demand.”
Surplus,
While I may not agree with everything you said, your post was probably the best one in this thread. There is excess and waste in every segment of the government. Too many people look at these things and say cut social garbage but leave defense alone or vice versa. I served 25 years in the Navy and believe me there is lots of waste. My wife has been employed in a federal agency which will remain nameless and I’ve seen/heard of lots of waste. It is rampant throughout the government because far too many treat the government as a rental car. “55 MPH of speed bumps? Sure, why not I don’t have to pay for repairs.”
My main disagreement is with your assertion that “All programs and “slices of the pie” are important.” The word “all” is far too inclusive. Beyond the question of whether a program is important is the more important question of whether government (meaning the taxpayer) should be funding it and if so which level of government. Merely asserting that education is important does not justify the federal government spending one cent on it.
Fly, you are right in that the Pubes are SAYING the right things. But they are not DOING the right things. They would never slash defense. They spend money like drunken sailors just like the Dems do. You never heard any objection from them when they kept raising the debt ceiling during the Bush administration. They say one thing and do another. They take your tax money and give it to lazy nonfunctional crony capitalist corporations like the TBTF banks, to the military industrial complex that charges them $1000 for a $10 hammer and such like that, and to companies like GE which paid no taxes last year and got a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/ge-paid-no-taxes-in-2010/2011/03/18/AFZZjFWB_blog.html
Corporate welfare dwarfs the welfare for the poor. Which is not to say that the poor should be allowed to scame the taxpayers either.
I do think government needs to be a lot smaller. However, the folks who have paid into Social Security for decades should not be left without anything when it comes time to retire. And we should have public education– perhaps not the kind we have now, but taxpayer funded. There are certain things a government needs to do for us to have a decent country where people are educated enough to become skilled workers and decent citizens and to have some degree of equality of opportunity.
Burn it down. Start with the cuts, then follow up with more cuts. All this talk about $4 trillion in cuts is over 10 YEARS. That’s only $400 billion in annual cuts when we’re running deficits north of $1.5 trillion per year. The Obama administration’s own budge projections (which assumed unrealistic growth and ridiculously low yields on treasuries) forecasted $1 trillion annual deficits through almost 2020. Even the ‘draconian’ Paul Ryan plan is spineless and still leaves us trillions upon trillion more in the public debt. Of course, that debt does not even accurately reflect the unfunded liabilities we have!
Paid into social security? You mean like Bernie Madoff’s investors? The damn thing is a giant ponzi scheme that only works if demographics are skewed towards increases in population and the workforce. When social secuity was first created the eligible age was greater than the average life expectancy! The ‘fix’ that Reagan and Tip O’Neil put into place in the 1980’s was also a shame. Congress takes the ‘surplus’ in social security funding we have every year (courtesy of FICA that you and your employer pay) and BORROWS against it, putting in its stead nice IOUs from the US Treasury.
Lock box.
More like straight jacket.
I know Congress took the Social Security money. But what do we do now? Let all people too old or sick to work wander the streets hungry and homeless, even after they paid in for decades to provide for their retirement? There should be means testing for Social Security, if there isn’t enough money to pay for it for everyone who paid in. Lloyd Blankfein shouldn’t be able to collect it, for example.
We can’t just let everybody down. And healthcare– if the government were not controlled by Special Interest Groups financing political campaigns– would be cheaper under the government than under private health care where execs are given huge bonuses and salaries similar to those given at TBTF banks. That’s what’s wrong with Obama’s health care. It was a giant giveaway program to the crony capitalist health insurance companies. We should have a public option instead.
Government is very efficient– as efficient as a fine Swiss watch. It’s just the government’s structure and goals that people misunderstand when they think government is inefficient. Right now government is structured for the sole purpose of giving Special Interest Groups all of the legislation that they pay for, by financing political campaigns. It does that with perfect efficiency. leaving no stone unturned toward that goal.
If we set up a different structure, with different goals, such as the best government and budget for the people as a whole– then we could get comparable efficiency toward those goals instead of the current ones.
Anyone who thinks government is inefficient, look at its current goal of giving Special Interest Groups all of the legislation that they pay for, by financing political campaigns. And ask: How well does government achieve this goal? How many Special Interest Group representatives do you see running around saying “I contributed significantly to Congressional/ presidential political campaigns and did not get my money’s worth. I am never doing that again!”
I will tell you how many of these folks you see and hear this from: Zero.
Your idea of means testing is an example of not considering the unintended consequences of government policy. Means testing encourages irresponsibility. If one person was responsible and fully funded their Roth and 401k etc and another guy spent every cent he made living large, means testing would reward irresponsibility and punish responsible saving. Instituting means testing will over time result in people deciding not to fund their retirement. Why put money in your 401k or Roth if it will result in being denied SS in the future after decades of paying into the SS fund. It is similar to the negative affect we’ve seen from the ridiculous war on poverty.
There’s a difference between means testing $40K in income versus $50K in income, and means testing $50K in income versus $1,000K in income. It’s idiotic that social security pays benefits to seniors who already earn hundreds of thousands in annual income. Ditto on Medicare. Just as its idiotic that those who make more than $96K a year in earned income no longer are susceptible to FICA on earnings above that line. Couple all that with the accounting shenanigans we play, from not taxing healthcare benefits from our employers to the 7.5% of FICA that you never see on a paycheck (but that an employer surely pays for and tracks) and a host of other things and from the very get go your average American has a distorted view of the economy.
Frog,
Don’t compare those ass clowns in DC to drunken sailors. I’ve spent more than half my life as a drunken sailor and guess what? I spent my own money and when I ran I out I stumbled back to the ship.
Fly: The big mega corporations do need to pay more tax though. They use the job creation excuse but the current setup ain’t creating jobs.
Yes, it is. It creates tons of jobs in India, China, all kinds of places.
This comment should on fucking fire.
Hmm. I have a comment awaiting moderation. What causes that, I wonder? My past experience with this is that every time it happens, the comment never gets moderated, so it never appears. So does this message mean I ought to rephrase the comment because I used some word or phrase that your computer program for posting doesn’t like?
It gets caught in filter. I will “moderate”
Thanks, Fly.
I agree on the debt ceiling, but I hate the country music.
Well, maybe it means my comment was too long. Here’s a shorter version.
They take your tax money and give it to lazy nonfunctional crony capitalist corporations like the TBTF banks, to the military industrial complex that charges them $1000 for a $10 hammer, and to companies like GE which paid no taxes last year and got a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/ge-paid-no-taxes-in-2010/2011/03/18/AFZZjFWB_blog.html
Corporate welfare dwarfs the welfare for the poor. Which is not to say that the poor should be allowed to scam the taxpayers either.
Oops, sorry–As soon as I posted the shorter version, the longer version did get posted. I’d use the delete button here for the 2nd one if we had one. Next time I will wait longer to see if my comment does get moderated and posted after it receives a “Your comment is awaiting moderation” notice.
By the looks of the dollar tonight it appears a downgrade is almost assured.
S&P’s economist came out and said the Republicans plan will get downgraded because it doesn’t do enough up front.
CNN reporting both plans will result in a ratings downgrade. We are fucked and so is our currency.
What a disaster.
The currency will be fine for now. If Congress can navigate this without invoking the Fed’s magic press, it will stay fine too.
I remember having to cower under my school desk to “prepare” for nuclear annililation. Somehow the current situation does not cause me the same level of angst.
“annihilation”…………my daughter, the editor, would be sad…….
“Just because we raised the debt ceiling in the past doesn’t make it right now.”
You said the too big to fail had to be bailed out to save the system; now you got religion on this debt ceiling thing?
“I honestly believe the GOP is trying to save this country from damnation”
Neither of our monkey-fuck parties give a damn about this country. The GOP is simply trying to gain leverage for the next election.
But I agree with this plan and I would bail out the banks again, if given the choice. There was no choice.
You will get the chance again, since the TBTF banks have not been broken up, and they have not been regulated enough to keep them from gambling again so riskily that they will again cause the world financial system to going down the toilet if they are not bailed out. Why this is better than paying the Social Security benefits of folks who paid into the fund for decades is beyond me.
Rest assured, you will bail out the banks again. In ways big and small. By that I refer to the 40%+ of each of your tax dollars that goes to pay “interest” on your governmet’s “loans” from foreign central banks. The interesting thing is that essentially all of the central banks in the world are privately owned by the same small group of Europeans. So the “Chinese” portion of your “national debt” was purchased by funny money created by the privately owned “Chinese central bank”. They contributed nothing and created nothing to “lend” this money to the US. It’s just a few digits in a computer, yet for the right to use their invaluable “money”, your tax dollars are paying them a fortune. They also hold major shares in the big commercial banks (though an elaborate web of subsidiaries) and thus you “bail them out” both by paying taxes, and by future obligation shit.
What if they just gave $17,000 to each individual instead of the 5.6 trillion to the banks. THen we could all have a party and spend it on hookers and beer… classic american stimulous on my package.
I love how everyone rich cries foul when redistribution of wealth is mentioned COMPLETELY overlooking the fact that wealth distribution has and continues to take place every day as the income gap between the very rich and the rest of us widens.
The bad news in this equation is of course, all the guns readily available everywhere in America because people will only take crumbs and being told to suck it up by the guy driving his 3rd best Jag for so long before they turn to the gun.
Bottom line is income disparity is terrible for the country, the greed of the rich is just in the way of that.
The only way this is going to get resolved is through COMPROMISE. In other words, slash spending and raise taxes.. Everybody needs to take a hit.
This discussion is so fucked up by ideology that it isn’t going anywhere.
Some facts.
1: The USA is not highly taxed. It’s tax rates are about the same or lower than many other industrialized countries.
2: Government is actually a pretty efficient way to create jobs. The real question is, do you want these jobs done? Do you need 11 aircraft carrier groups? Do you need 5 times as many jails as any other nation on earth? Do you need to invade foreign countries on a whim?
3: Borrowing money and giving it to corporations is actually an inefficient way to create jobs. Much of that money goes to pay raises for people already employed. The reason corporations are not creating jobs is not lack of capital, but lack of customers.
4: People on welfare are not lazy/jobbing the system for the most part. Over half are children, and the average length of time some is on social assistance is around 7 months. Only a tiny percentage are people who are too fucking lazy to work and are happy to sit on their asses their whole life and collect pogie.
5: Supply side economics does not work. The only thing that will get someone to build a factory and hire people is demand. Customers are the driving force. No entrepreneur says “I got an extra 10 million bucks, I’ll build a factory.” They say,”I’ve got an idea for something I can sell to people.” and then go to the bank to get money. If you have an idea you can get capital.
These are not opinions. They are facts. Any ideology that cannot accept these facts is wrong.
Wow, you are truly lost. Those are not facts, but fiction.
I don’t need to take a fucking hit. Get this: raising taxes are never acceptable. We do not have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem.
You want to get out of this malaise?
Don’t listen to Obama.
Maybe that will be your granny with the heroin needle in her neck trying to ease the pain of Medicare cuts you greedy motherfucker.
My grandmother is dead you stupid fuck.
I’m sure she died of a broken heart upon learning you sucked Republican dick.
I gotta give it to you. Cruel, but great come back!
Fly, looking at Raise Taxes, Cut Spending’s post, do you really believe that ALL of that is fiction?
He said a lot of different things here. What you commented on is that you think it is not necessary to raise taxes. Do you then agree with his other points?
E.g. you believe that we DO need 11 aircraft carrier groups? And need 5 times as many jails as any other nation on earth? And need to invade foreign countries on a whim?
And do you not believe that “The only thing that will get someone to build a factory and hire people is demand. Customers are the driving force.”?
Jails and wars is a totally different subject than raising my taxes. I pay enough.
thought you said your accountant saw to it that you paid minimal taxes … less than your secretary?
The IRS could be reading. Cut it out!
Fly , do you think taxes should be zero then? And government non-existent? Is there nothing you would pay taxes for? Right now you pay them to benefit the Special Interest Groups that finance political campaigns of presidents and Congress.
One of the numerous problems I have with cutting off Social Security and Medicare– besides it being an indecent backward thing to do to shaft everyone who paid in for decades for their retirement– is that right now we give our tax money to crony capitalist corporations who hoard the money. And there are few jobs created in the U.S. by doing that. But if we give it to Social Security and Medicare recipients, at least they do not hoard cash because they can not. The vast majority of them must use it to live on and to buy medical services with, since most of them are not rich enough to have money left over to hoard. So they actually buy stuff in the economy as consumers. Get rid of that and you get rid of a large percentage of consumers. Not a bright thing to do in a recession.
Do you really feel fine about sending Granny dumpster diving to find food during her retirement, after she paid into Social Security for decades?
Did I say that? I am against loopholes and against raising taxes on individuals. Go after the big companies like GE, not me.
It seems that neither Repub or Dem will care or dare do that to big companies. What can the individual people do to change that? Is there any hope?
Pay up Fly you rich fuck.
Frog,
Nothing in Fly’s comments indicated he is an anarchist. When we say don’t increase taxes we are not saying there should be no taxes or government. There should be less taxes and smaller government. We understand that merely raising taxes will do nothing to solve the long term problems. First step is to admit we have a long term problem and that large scale changes need to be implemented over time. Bush did not do this on his own and Obama did not do this on his own. We have been on this path for decades. Bush sped up the process with the expansion of medicare. Obama greatly sped up the process with massive additional spending. However, neither of them put us on this path. Politicians in general have sent us this direction over the last century. They have promised utopia and sent the IOU to future generations. Poverty might suck. Medicine might be nice. Etc, etc, etc. However, once you start magically eliminating poverty (giving cash out) and making medical care free (nothing is as expensive as free) people will want more and more of the magic stuff since it is easier to get than the money obtained from that nasty work idea. Problem is politicians want to get elected and reelected. It is easier to get reelected if you’re promising crap to the morons who don’t pay for it. We are at the tipping point where more than half the population pay no taxes. If more than half pay nothing why would they care about the debt or how high taxes go? A partial solution is the institute a national sales tax so everyone experiences the joy of funding our politician’s promises. The more important solution is review every single bit of government spending and if it can not be justified as a constitutionally mandated federal responsibility end it. If local government wants to fund it they can make that decision.
1. The USA IS highly taxed. Just because the situation is worse in some even more communist countries doesn’t make it better.
2. Government sucks at creating jobs. Other than quasi-slavery like the CCC (which would be useful). aircraft carriers are a maybe, jails are a definately (unless you do more hangings and sterilizations of criminals), not invading foreign countries is where we agree.
3. Agreed. Borrowing money that you don’t have is always stupid unless it can directly pay itself off and more.
4. Lazy kids…
From this point forward, everytime you see a politician or pundit you will imagine they just sucked a dick…forever.
Wow. I like this. Got home and reading this has me thinking your a smarter bunch then last week.
Perhaps I am digressing, (I cant spell) however, outofthemiddleclass said somthing at the top that makes me want to punch his mother in the nutz.
Our prez was elected because if the shit he said he would do. Some of the stuff I agreed with and actually believed him.
1.Transparency. No law would be passed unless the people had a chance to read it.
Congress didnt even read it, how the f_ck were the people supposed to. “pass it first to see whats inside” I still cant believe it went down like that. Anyway, my point is he lie. Not is a small way but in the biggest way possible and blatently to add insult to this egregoius injury. (should I even go on?)
2. end the wars and as president would never unilaterly send our forces in to combat unless it was for our natyional defense.
That talk won him the noble peace price. kinda gansta since he is a war all day every day.
Maybe blowing fools up on Libya and help the Euro zone take shit down does not count. I believe it does and yet an other example of his lies. sounded great, untter nonsense.
I mean there are so many things to point out, so I will leave it at that.
One should think twice before they start saying stupid shit like Outtahismindmiddleclass
ETFC winning. like normal.

Washington can’t even put together a budget, let alone stick to one.
F–ing unbelievable.
……and yes, kick them all out of office for jerking when they should be working.
I’m so glad the Fly has pointed this out. Look, I’m as much of a capitalist whore as the rest of you – probably more, but right is RIGHT. Obama is the WORST president in the history of the USA. He has taken the bad policies of Bush (which WERE bad, but he was NOT a true conservative) and magnified them a thousand fold. His agenda was laid bare by his friend Rev Al Sharpton a year ago – any of you remember what Rev Al said? “Yeah, so he’s a Socialist. So what?” Is that what tyou guys really want? a redistribution of wealth and the formation of a wealfare state where there is NO incentive rto work, achieve or innovate? Where people get jobs basewed on rigid government agendas and controls rather than merit? -and don’t EVEN get me startted on Obama’s foreeign policy which is literally BOWING to foriegn kings and dictators (like the Saudi knig, his Muslim brother who he bowed to).
Obama’s Main concern is his own re-election, that’s why he has transparently stated that we ‘must’ resolve this before the 2012 elections heat up. Why’s that Mr. President? So we, the ignorant masses can forget how you buried the dollar, raised taxes and rewarded the lazy? Obama doesn’t care at ALL about the elderly who are living on fixed incomes whose savings in dollars he has destroyed, only his buddies with their hands out on the welfare lines. Let’s be clear, I care about those who are less fortunate, but do you really want a nation which tells the middle class: ‘why work? why save? we will only tax everything you make and those who are irresponsible will get the same treatment as you anyhow. What about those seniors who have ‘paid their dues’ and are watching their life savings lose 40% of it’s real value due to the Bernanke/Obama dollar printing press? Why does the USA need to give money to countries that HATE us like Egypt, Pakistan, the terrorist run PA, Lebanon, Indonesia ,”U.S. economic assistance to Egypt through the United States Agency for International Development has totaled more than $28.6 billion since 1975.”
Even those calling themselves ‘palestinians’ who cheered the 9/11 attack on America and regularly commit acts of terror also receive nearly 600 million dollars a year in aid from the U.S. not including a special 900 million Obama sent to “rebuild” gaza (by rebuilding I assume he meant their missle launching infrastructure). Nearly all of this money winds up in their corrupt leaders hands and the rest goes to terrorists. Pakistan has received $20.7 billion worth of U.S. assistance over the past decade, about two-thirds of it in military aid, in addition to many oither Muslim counteries. ALL FORIEGN aid (and yes, including that to Israel our true allies who is actually harmed by US aid and does not need it) should be cut. In addition, gov’t programs should be reviewed and scrutinized and wasteful ones abolished – including those to Obama’s pal’s in the Chicago political machine. The Republicans led by the Honorable Rep Boehner MUST make a stand now and not let the Socialist spenders destroy our beloved nation. – Oh and let’s PULL OUT OF THE UN AND not spend ONE MORE DIME of taxpayer money on that evil organization, make the UN plaza in NY a federally owned condo development and let the USA sell it for hundreds of bilions in tax revenue!
Here’s just 1 example of Obama’s spending agenda:
President Obama’s used a “security”
waiver to get around laws restricting funding to the PA, He did not say how much money he is sending, or why:

sorry about some idiots rant … I linked the pic only and apparently it was attached to this guys blog but you get the point … Kiss, Kiss
LoL. Of course, no one thinks Bush was flawless either. Red Herring.
Yes Bush’s ‘hand holding’ with that Groucho Marx look alike is/was SICKENING, esp after 9/11. My opposition to Obama in NO WAY denotes any support for Bush or his idiotic foriegn policy, but Obama actually BOWED to a king!
http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=93696
This done as a SITTING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, in my opinion an absolute denigration of America and the office he holds. Bush may have been ‘bought off by oil money, but bowing down to a foreign Groucho Marx king?!? unforgiveable. Both Obama’s fathers were Muslim, he is considered a Muslim under Islamic law, he attended a Madrasa in Indonesia, his man, AG Eric Holder refused to call terrorism ‘Islamic’ in congress. Obama’s agenda is clear, an undermining of US soverignty, cirrency and freedom while bribing the multinational corporations and wall street with the spoils of the destruction of trhe US treasury…
Oh god.. give it a fucking rest… you conspiratorial paranoid schizo fucktard
Is it conspiratorial or TRUE? Obama’s biological father was a Kenyan Muslim, his stepfather who later married his mother was ALSO a Muslim and he went to a Muslim school in Indonesia. Did I just make that up?
The only ‘Christianity’ he got was at rev. Wright’s “G-D damn America” church. Some Christian. Stay tuned till after Nov 4th, 2012 when Hussain Obama openly admits he’s a Muslim… In the meantime his bowing to a Saudi king has brought shame to the office of President of the United States.
Your comments are all ideology here, with almost no facts.
The stuff you mentioned, by your own admission, has been happening “since 1975”, “over the past decade” etc. So there are lots of Republican contributions to these things too.
Speaking of Obama, referring to “the Saudi king, his Muslim brother who he bowed to” You mean the guy Bush went around holding hands with? And Obama is a Christian, not a Muslim. Your points are very one-sided here. But there is no use discussing this with you, because people who watch Fox News as if it were the truth– what can I say?
I don’t like Obama myself, but the Repubs are even worse.
I wish that all of us voters would pledge to each other to never again vote for a candidate who accepted a dime from a Special Interest Group, whether it be Fannie Mae, Too Big to Fail banks, or whatever. Most welfare that our taxes are spent on is corporate welfare for the rich corporations, not welfare for the poor. Of course Fox News never mentions that fact.
It’s actually pretty gay to do it now when it should have been done last presidency…unless of course you want to pick on a black man. The wars are/were extremely expensive and the Republicans started that. They don’t want to end it. Obama could end it easily if allowed; after all, war is a Republican thing.
And on the table, the Republicans are not willing to cut much of any republican interest. Obama, on the other hand, is more than willing to cut some of everything (and raise taxes as well). Bohner wants Obama to cut entitlements including heathcare/medicaid/alternative energy/etc yet Bohner wasn’t willing to cut oil and gas subsidies and raise taxes. It’s easy for Bohner when he doesn’t have to cut much pork on his side. It’s always easy. Even I can do it….cut someone else’s benefits and keep my own intact. And that is what the Repubs are doing.
Oil and gas subsidies are pretty-much essential. Last time I checked, you guys are importing shitloads from parts of the world that it is a lot cheaper (propping up a lot of terrorists in the process). Like Ed Stelmach. 😉
Obama could end war easily if allowed? He seems pretty gun-ho about helping his banker buddies with Libya. Have you heard him talk about it/defend it?
Actually, oil and gas subsidies are not essential. But if you put solar panels on every roof top and electrify the cars. The massive scale will make alternative energies much cheaper than oil/gas. As such, you dramatically improve American prosperity. Once you go with black (Obama), you never go back!
Last I checked, Obama has not put solar panels and electric vehicles all over the place. Credit where due: He did loan a few hundred mil to Tesla. Which is good. 3 cheers for the half-white guy! Hip-hip… pfffffff
I actually and truly don’t care what his ethnicity and religion are. He is a rampant and prolific liar and that is the important part.
An example of Boehner lying to the American people during his rebuttal:

Fly,
I am a long-time investigative journalist with a hardcore John Birch upbringing and about 15 years of financial licensing and trading experience behind me.
The media is owned by central bankers. There is no difference between a democrat or a republican in the US because they are both owned by central bankers.
UN Agenda 21 is the well-documented, out-in-the-open central banker plan to move to a communitarian world and regional government system, with sustainable development at its core. Carbon trading? Ring a bell?
The US dollar will continue its collapse, to pave way for wealth redistribution according to UN Agenda 21 and the rise of a local-bred “sustainable” communitarian movement across the US and Europe.

Being that we can’t afford paying social security, we need to cut out all things that extend lifespans and allow assisted suicides for any reasons, even if the kids think their parents are just “too damn old” and parents aren’t ready. Also extend the abortion late stage to 17 years old. Fucking kids better act right or their parents will give them a post birth abortion! Death penalty should occur if you go to jail for the 2nd time and you are over 35.
We should also have politicians engage in a fight to the death gladiator style if their approval rating sucks.

When I was little, I’d gather red ants and black ants and put them in the same box and watch them go after each other. They’d fight like maniacs for a while, but the action would eventually die down even amongst the healthy ants and I’d have to shake the box to get things going again.
The Fly is shaking the box tonight.
an ant I was playing with once bit the shit out of me so I fucking destroyed every single ant in sight and stomped their ant hills. I wasn’t crazy enough to poor gasoline on them and burn it, but that one fucking ant ruined it for it’s species as they are now extinct in my part of the town.
What they need to do is encourage businesses to expand by easing regulations and taxes.
Oh dear. That’s worked out great in the past.
You mean from 1776 to 1940? yeah it worked fine.
I tyink It’s ironic that fly mention less regulation and gov and the next sentence talks about ending corruption and fraud.
“the primary component of the modern scandal is deregulation, either by law or by de facto dumbing down or hacking back of the supervisory offices of government. This is the common thread that unites such otherwise disparate events as the 2008 financial crisis, the S&L debacle of the 1980’s, the BP oil spill (made possible by driller-friendly Minerals Management Service), and the fall of lobbyist Jack Abramoff (who aimed to shield offshore sweatshops from the heavy hand of the state).”
Do I need to mention Enron? Its fair to say to this day no one has pushed harder for deregulation.

Anyway.. Was saying.. Sec was toothless with Maddof. Lack of funding. The money is spent elsewhere.
But I agree gov spending has to be reign in. Resources have to be allocated more wisely.

That’s half the cost of the Bush tax cuts and less than two-thirds of what has been spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
