Oil is not at $140, yet. Nonetheless, rig count activity, both onshore and off, is through the fucking roof. It should not be a surprise to you to see stocks like Flotek Industries, Inc. [[FTK]] , Helmerich & Payne, Inc. [[HP]] , Weatherford International Ltd. [[WFT]] or Lufkin Industries, Inc. [[LUFK]] go through the roof. Rig count is near all time highs in many parts of the United States. We are talking about 25%+ sequential quarterly growth, in both oil and gas. What does that mean?
Quite frankly, it means nirvana for depressed drilling parts makers. It is not by accident that piece of shit companies, like Flotek Industries, Inc. [[FTK]] , Warren Resources, Inc. [[WRES]] or Global Industries, Ltd. [[GLBL]] have gone parabolic to the upside, but by design.
In summary, oil is back. Drilling is back. For the love of stale donuts, Le Fly is back.

Nice! Last evening read a spectacular article on offshore drilling. The process of drilling deep water offshore is simply amazing and highly complex. In regards to the deep water crude boom, traveling 2 miles to get to the sea floor is only half the battle. Once you reach the seafloor, you need to go through another 10,000-20,000 feet of rock and salt formations to get to the oil. The data comes from one source and perhaps may not be entirely true, but the article was sure fascinating.
Off to the Green Turtle Club Marina in the Bahamas for some much needed decompression time. Absolutely amazing and profitable trading week. Today, checked technical and overall hybrid scores a few times and bought some core holding dips. What a treat, instead of 40 we get 60. Cigars and scotch for all…..

There’s one less rig in the GOM. Another fun oil rig company is VTG, only 1.78/sh. They got some new rigs getting to work internationally, off shore stuff.
It should provide you with an excellent exit for FTK.
If oil begins to go parabolic keep in mind that 10 of the last 11 recessions post WWII have been preceded by sharp inclines of oil prices. The only time it didn’t was in 1960-61 when there was a mild recession.
Except this time I think the price will become a fact of life. Demand has been right on the ability to supply since about 2005 and any up tick in the world economy will send price/bbl soaring up again. I doubt if it will come back down again barring an outright collapse of the world economy. Too many forks stuck in the same pie now. That’s the difference vs all other oil price spikes in the past.
And speaking of soaring…………..I watched a 3 year old bald eagle grab a fish out of the small local pond this morning, carry it up to a nearby tree branch and proceed to have breakfast. That was way cool and reminded me that the market isn’t the only thing in life that matters.

Now’s as good a time as any to point out that just a few days ago, The Fly gave many of us unPPT’d types a gift (http://ibankcoin.com/flyblog/2010/04/13/get-in-the-vice-4/). Being the reckless type, I went ahead and dumped a stupid amount of money into these stocks, spreading it evenly among them all. Currently, I am up 9.96% in a mere 9 days. Biggest winner is the Fly darling FTK with 37.01% gain in those 9 days. There are a couple other double digit gainers (XNPT, BLDR). The sole loser is GTXI at -0.60%. The next lowest performer is SCHL with a respectable 3.66% gain. All the rest are in the green between 5.44% (PLCE) and 9.45% (SKS). I have no intention of closing these positions anytime soon unless something drastic happens. So I’ll keep you updated from time to time, unless you tell me to shut it.
Some might argue that the market has been going gangbusters, so those particular stocks were likely to be just as good as any others. I don’t know how to calculate how the S&P did over the past 9 days, but I’d be willing to bet it’s nowhere near 10% up. I think the moral of the story is when the Fly gives you a peek at the PPT, listen closely.

A little frothy in another corner of the oil patch: I owned the royalty trust BPT for about three years. Watched it hit ~$107 when oil peaked at ~$149 or whatever in the summer of ’08. A couple of weeks ago it hit $105 with oil in the $80s. This is a trust with maybe ten years of life in it, kicking out ~$9 per year in distributions. So I sold it at $104 and change and bought more puts on it (I had bought a few puts on it a couple of weeks earlier, as a hedge).

I’ve been away for awhile but I’m glad to see The Fly is finally back in bull mode – that VXX & TLT experiment was interesting. In any case, if you haven’t bought the radio stocks you are missing out on the best leveraged play on the economic recovery…just check out SBSA, EMMS, SBGI, ETM, CMLS, ROIAK…no analyst coverage anymore to screw you either. Oils are interesting but not enought leverage for me. Meanwhile, Dow 15,000 beckons, but I’m afraid there is a big time correction starting mid-week as the crowd sells in May and goes away…even BuyandHoldBoy will be selling after the usual early-week rally…so don’t get too bullish up here Fly – you’ll wish you didn’t.
