Revving Inflation in China Kills Hopes of Dovish Action

China’s inflation accelerated more than forecast in March on a pickup in food prices, signaling that policy makers may exercise caution in adding stimulus to boost growth.

Consumer prices rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said today. That was more than the median 3.4 percent estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of 33 economists. Food-related costs gained 7.5 percent.

Premier Wen Jiabao’s officials may need to remain alert to the risk of inflation bouncing back even after price increases stayed below the government’s 4 percent target for a second month.China’s economy may have expanded last quarter at the slowest pace in almost three years, showing the limits of the nation’s contribution to global growth as U.S. job growth weakens and concern mounts about Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis.

“The upside surprise in today’s CPI reading is likely to raise concerns about a possible rebound in inflationary pressures among policy makers,” said Song Yu, a Beijing-based economist with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. “The data could limit the magnitude of the policy loosening that likely started in March,” Song said, citing Goldman’s observations on the increasing supply of loans and news reports on the government easing restrictions on banks’ lending capacity…”

Why Stocks Look Too Pricey

By BEN LEVISOHN

After a six-month rally, U.S. stocks are getting pricier. Experts say investors should exercise caution.

The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index gained 12% during the first three months of 2012, the best start to the year since 1998. After this week’s 0.7% drop, the benchmark index has run up a stunning 27% since Oct. 3. Despite the surge, some strategists argue that stocks are still cheap, based on comparisons with bonds.

More traditional measures, however, suggest stocks at best are fairly priced, and at worst are worryingly expensive. With corporate earnings growth slowing in the U.S. and fresh fears of a European meltdown, some strategists say stocks are due for a rough stretch.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty out there, so the S&P shouldn’t be trading at a premium,” says Stuart Kaiser, an equity strategist at Goldman Sachs Group GS -1.63% . “The idea that equities are cheap is not quite right when all factors are considered.”

The Bulls Win Today by Not Having Follow Through From Yesterday’s Downside Action

The bulls and bears had a tug of war today. All in all a win for the bulls as we did not see follow through from yesterday.

An interesting note is that besides yesterday we have decoupled from European markets when you compare market action.

Oil went up silly today as did many commodities.

DOW down 16

NASDAQ up 12

Pre Market Movers

“WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Among the stocks that could see active trade in Thursday’s session are Ruby Tuesday Inc., Meru Networks Inc. and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.

CarMax Inc. KMX +0.84% , Constellation Brands Inc. STZ +0.78% , WD-40 Co. WDFC -0.80% , Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. SCHN -2.83% , AZZ Inc. AZZ -1.86%  and SemiLEDS Corp.LEDS +1.02%  are the featured companies on Thursday’s earnings calendar.

Standard & Poor’s said Cinemark Holdings Inc. CNK +5.14%  will take the place of NstarNST -1.00%  in the S&P MidCap 400 index after the close of trading April 9. Nstar and merger partner Northeast Utilities NU -0.83%  said they have received final approval, from Massachusetts regulators, for their transaction. The companies have set a closing date of April 10.

RT 8.88, -0.18, -1.9% Ruby Tuesday RT -1.99%  announced plans to close 25 to 27 restaurants that it said have failed to perform up to expectations. The closings will come before the end of May, the Maryville, Tenn.-based company said late Wednesday in reporting financial results for the third quarter ended Feb. 28. Profit fell for the latest quarter as revenue rose 1.8% to $324.8 million, but same-store sales dropped 5% at company-owned Ruby Tuesday restaurants, and for the year, management projected a decrease of 4% to 4.5%. Full-year earnings are forecast at 43 cents to 48 cents a share, excluding the impact of impairment and exit costs related the restaurant closings as well as other factors. The company also announced it will acquire Lime Fresh Mexican Grill for $24 million, a deal expected to be completed during the current quarter.

Meru Networks MERU +4.73% , citing business challenges that have proved “greater than expected,” said results for the first quarter ended March 31 will come in lower than forecast. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based wireless technology company now projects quarterly revenue in a range of $19.0 million to $19.5 million. Meru is taking steps to limit growth in expenses and enhance productivity, according to Bami Bastani, president and chief executive, who began working in the post in a full-time capacity on Monday.

Nearly two years to the day after the tragedy, Alpha Natural Resources Inc. ANR +0.48% said the Upper Big Branch coal mine in West Virginia will be permanently closed. An explosion at the mine, owned at the time by Massey Energy Co., left 29 miners dead. Work on sealing off the mine is expected to be completed this summer, according to Bristol, Va.-based Alpha Natural, which acquired the mine property via its 2011 purchase of Massey Energy. “We are currently making significant safety-related investments in leading-edge technologies that will make coal mines safer throughout the industry,” said Kevin Crutchfield, CEO of Alpha Natural, in a statement.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. DKS +0.10%  closed on the acquisition of the Top-Flite brand, including intellectual property rights, from Callaway Golf Co. ELY -2.02% , the companies said. Term were not disclosed. The deal means “we’ve added a strong, highly recognized name to our portfolio while gaining a valuable competitive advantage in the golf market,” said Edward Stack, chairman and CEO of the Pittsburgh-based Dick’s chain. Callaway said the disposal is in keeping with management’s plans for a business restructuring aimed at lowering costs and heightening focus on the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company’s core units.

Carmike Cinemas Inc. CKEC +0.21%  has commenced a secondary public offering of common stock, in the amount of 4 million shares. The Columbus, Ga.-based company said it plans to use net proceeds for general corporate purposes. Underwriters will have a 30-day option to buy up to 600,000 additional shares to satisfy investor demand if warranted.

Underwriters fully exercised their option to buy additional shares of Enphase Energy Inc.ENPH -2.49%  following the company’s initial public offering last week. As a result, Petaluma, Calif.-based Enphase said it sold more than 10.3 million common shares at a price of $6 each, yielding net proceeds of about $54.6 million.

Retailers Show Good Sales Results for March

Source

“NEW YORK (AP) — Retailers are reporting warm weather and demand for new spring fashions helped push March sales up.

Target Corp, Macy’s, Limited Brands Inc., which owns Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works, and outdoor sports retailer Zumiez reported better-than-expected sales for March.

Still, there were some patches of weakness as worry over high gas prices and unemployment kept some spending muted.

Teen retailers The Buckle and Wet Seal missed expectations. Costco Wholesale Corp.’s results also came in just shy of expectations as currency fluctuations hurt sales.

The figures are based on revenue at stores opened at least a year and are considered a key indicator of a retailer’s health. Economists closely watch consumer spending since it accounts for more than 70 percent of all economic activity.”

Challenger Jobs Report Says Employers Announced Job Cuts Fell 8.9%

“Employers in the U.S. announced fewer job cuts in March than a year earlier, another sign of healing in the labor market.

Planned firings fell by 8.8 percent from March 2011 to a 10-month low of 37,880, according to figures released today by Chicago-based job placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. Job cuts at government and nonprofit agencies were down 86 percent last quarter compared with the same period in 2011, the report showed.

Dismissals are waning as employers become more optimistic about the economic outlook. At the same time, rising gasoline prices pose a risk to consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the world’s largest economy.

“Both consumer products and transportation saw fewer job cuts in March after experiencing heavy cuts in February,” John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in a statement. “These are key indicators of the economy’s health.”

Compared with February, announcements fell 27 percent. Because the figures aren’t adjusted for seasonal effects, economists prefer to focus on year-over-year changes rather than monthly numbers.

Telecommunications firms led all industries with 4,089 announced job cuts in March, with almost half coming from T- Mobile USA Inc., followed by 3,733 dismissals in education….”

China’s (IFB1) stocks rose, driving the benchmark index to the biggest advance in almost two months, after the government said it will more than double the amount foreigners can invest in equities, bonds and bank deposits.

Suning Appliance Co. and Kweichow Moutai Co. paced gains for consumer companies after Credit Agricole CIB said borrowing costs will be cut this month. “12:00 pm : Stocks remain under steady pressure, which has kept the S&P 500 down more than 1% for the day. Although the broad market measure has been down by 1% or more on a few occasions in 2012, only once has pressure persisted into the close so that it actually logged a loss in excess of 1%. That tumble took place on March 6, when market participants opted to pare their positions amid revived concerns about global growth in response to a 0.3% decline in eurozone fourth quarter GDP following headlines earlier in the week that had stated China expects its pace of economic growth to slow to 7.5%.DJ30 -153.48 NASDAQ -53.05 SP500 -16.32 NASDAQ Adv/Vol/Dec 345/720 mln/2080 NYSE Adv/Vol/Dec 425/280 mln/2490

11:30 am : So far this year the Nasdaq has been a better performer than its counterparts. However, today it has struggled to limit losses in the face of selling like it has so many times before. As a result, the Nasdaq is grappling with deeper losses than either the Dow or the S&P 500.

The Nasdaq was propped up in the prior session by shares of Apple (AAPL 621.47, -7.85), which set a record high following positive analyst commentary, but the stock’s decline today proves that it isn’t completely immune to selling pressure. Other large-cap Tech stocks are also under pronounced pressure. DJ30 -163.02 NASDAQ -52.44 SP500 -16.82 NASDAQ Adv/Vol/Dec 325/585 mln/2055 NYSE Adv/Vol/Dec 405/230 mln/2485

11:00 am : Stocks have descended to new session lows. The slide has left the three major equity averages trading with losses well in excess of 1%.

Amid such steep, expansive losses, the Volatility Index is up a sharp 12%. That spike has the euphemistically labeled Fear Gauge at a three-week high above 17.

A mix of heightened volatility and weakness among stocks has helped bolster buying interest in the dollar, which now leads a basket of major foreign currencies by almost 0.5%. That move, along with a jump yesterday in response to a hawkish tone to FOMC commentary in the meeting minutes, has the dollar up more than 1% week to date. DJ30 -176.11 NASDAQ -56.10 SP500 -18.69 NASDAQ Adv/Vol/Dec 325/435 mln/2025 NYSE Adv/Vol/Dec 405/180 mln/2455

10:35 am : Crude oil futures prices were down about 1.2% roughly 10 minutes ago, but since the release of weekly inventory numbers prices have fallen deeper into negative territory so that contracts now price crude oil 1.9% lower at $102.05 per barrel. The inventory report showed a build of 9.0 million barrels, which contrasts with the consensus call for a build of 2.5 million barrels.

Nautral gas prices have overcome morning selling pressure to trade at $2.19 per MMBtu for a 0.3% gain. Earlier this week prices were near $2.07 per MMBtu for multi-year lows.

Precious metals have been under pressure all morning. Specifically, silver prices are down 5.4% to $31.47 per ounce, while gold contends with a 2.8% loss at $1625.30 per ounce. Earlier this morning gold prices slipped below $1620 per ounce to set its lowest level since January.

General weakness in the commodity complex has the CRB Index wrestling with a 1.2% loss. DJ30 -153.75 NASDAQ -44.48 SP500 -15.83 NASDAQ Adv/Vol/Dec 330/295 mln/1965 NYSE Adv/Vol/Dec 400/135 mln/2400

10:05 am : The ISM Services Index for March came in at 56.0, which is down from the prior month reading of 57.3 and slightly less than the reading of 56.7 that had been generally expected.

Stocks didn’t have much of an immediate reaction to the reading, but some subsequent selling now has the Nasdaq at a fractionally extended session low. Neither the Dow nor the S&P 500 have confirmed that move. DJ30 -111.38 NASDAQ -32.08 SP500 -11.82 NASDAQ Adv/Vol/Dec 270/125 mln/1920 NYSE Adv/Vol/Dec 330/75 mln/2380

09:45 am : Stocks are down markedly this morning, such that the broad market is below the depths set during the prior session. Weakness is widespread.

Of the 10 major sectors, only Telecom is trading in positive territory. Although its 0.1% gain seems unimpressive, the other sectors trade with losses that range from 1.1% to 0.2% — Financials and Consumer Staples, respectively.

With stocks decidedly out of favor safe havens like Treasuries and the dollar are attracting buying interest. Gains by the benchmark 10-year Note has its yield back below 2.25%, while the greenback has gained 0.4% against a basket of major foreign currencies.
