Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) : The biggest maker of networking equipment reported profit and sales that exceeded analysts’ estimates, signaling that corporate-network revenue helped make up for slower spending by phone and cable companies.
Diamond Foods Inc. (DMND) : The snack maker said it will restate earnings for the past two years and replace its chief executive officer and chief financial officer after an internal probe found the company booked payments to walnut growers in the wrong periods.
Groupon Inc. (GRPN) (GRPN US): The largest daily-deal site had an unexpected fourth-quarter loss after an expansion into lower- margin businesses sapped profitability during its first period as a publicly traded company.
Prudential Financial Inc. (PRU) : The life insurer that expanded in Japan through acquisitions said fourth-quarter profit more than tripled and beat analyst projections on non- U.S. earnings and narrower losses from investments and derivatives.
Select Comfort Corp. (SCSS) : The maker of air bed mattresses posted fourth-quarter earnings excluding some items of 24 cents a share, exceeding the average analyst estimate for 22 cents, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (TQNT) : The chipmaker forecast first-quarter excluding some items earnings of 1 cent to 3 cents a share, compared with the average analyst estimate of 3 cents, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
Visa Inc. (V) : The world’s biggest payments network said fiscal first-quarter profit climbed 16 percent, exceeding analyst projections, as consumers increased use of credit and debit cards.

Facebook As a Mobile Platform
“Facebook is huge on mobile — as an application developer. But questions have circled for years around how it can be a real mobileplatform on top of operating systems controlled by Apple and Google. But we got a little more data on what it’s already accomplishing on the platform front, today at the Inside Social Apps conference here in San Francisco.
Facebook product director Carl Sjogreen said on stage that out of the 425 million monthly mobile users that it currently counts, 60 million are going to third party apps. And this isn’t just once a month apiece — this is 320 million times total per month, which means an average of five times per user.
I couldn’t get more details on how these numbers break down, except that they do not include Facebook’s own native or web apps. Rather, they seem to mean any mobile app that has somehow integrated Facebook. So, like what Zynga has done with the mobile version of FarmVille, or how you can find Facebook friends to add to Path, or any number of other implementations out there.
Facebook’s goal as a company is to create a social layer on top of everything, everywhere. For mobile, it already offers a variety of platform-style options including login identity, social channels including requests, the news feed, bookmarks, search, social plugins and email. Many of these features only became available in October. The numbers today mean that this stuff is getting some traction. Mobile app developers, maybe it’s time to look closer at how to use Facebook for your next update.”

Keep Brazil on Your Radar; Dollar Flows Increase
BRASILIA (Dow Jones)–Dollars flowed heavily into Brazil in January and in the first days of February, with incoming investment flows strongly outweighing foreign trade receipts.
According to figures released by the country’s central bank Wednesday, net dollar flows into the country rose to $7.28 billion in January from $1.94 billion in net dollar outflows seen in December. In the Feb. 1-3 period, dollar inflows totaled $3.79 billion. That compared with $322 million in net outflows seen in the same period last year.
Incoming investment to Brazil has surged early this year as several companies have taken advantage of favorable market conditions to launch overseas financing deals.
Net financial inflows to Brazil in January totaled $6.90 billion, while trade-related inflows reached only $381 million. Similarly, financial inflows in the first days of February totaled $3.66 billion, while trade related inflows reached only $134 million.
Brazil’s foreign trade results have suffered recently under the influence of an appreciated local currency, which has gained more than 8% against the dollar so far this year.
Brazil posted net dollar inflows of $65.27 billion in 2011. That result was up from only $24.40 billion in inflows seen in 2010.
Also Wednesday, Brazil’s central bank reported that local banks ended January with a net $5.25 billion long dollar position in futures markets. That was reversed from a net $1.58 billion short dollar position at the end of December.
