Looking at UPL and LLEN. Volume pockets above, daily volumes decreasing. Need a pullback in UPL, but would like your thoughts.

How do you set stop limit ideas on options? For example, FFIV went below 87.50, do you just set up an alert for the stock and then proceed to manage the option?

Sorry, I know that I asked a similar type of question before. Let me rephrase it…Does anyone set alerts when the underlining stock breaks below a certain level? Trying to figure out how I can efficiently manage my options portfolio while at work.

        Use contingent orders.

I use a limit order at the MAXIMUM target price when I buy the options. As time decays, or if the option shows weakness over a couple of days, the maximum target price is lowered periodically to BELOW the purchase price if necessary. That way, if there is a sale, I always sell on an uptick, even with a loss recovery (don’t chase/panic/set time limit). I also tend to go for more expiration time and further out of the money for the same option price, if I plan to recover any premium.

I go on the premise that I will lose all of the option premium and don’t` try to manage premium recovery price swings on an hourly/daily basis for the bottom end. Complete losses will still occur and are managed by position sizing.

Yes, because I can’t man the station throughout the day, I use contingent orders on the underlying stock and sell at market price. I haven’t figured out how to calculate the anticipated “limit price” when the underlying hits a specific price, so I have to rely on market order.

Yes, I will get worse fills, but if the underlying has hit my target price, then it has usually turned out in my favor; because after it hits the target price, it will usually back off. The benefit of selling @ market at my target price still outweighs missing my target price.

Another question. I understand the impact of volatility on option price. I have GS Nov 160’s. The stock price is up, the option bid and ask hasn’t changed, but the amount in my
unrealized” column has increased. Is this typical (no change in last, bid or ask but the account reflecting a gain)? Or is this peculiar to IB? If I wanted to sell it right now, I’d only get the bid or thereabouts.

Etrade does this too. They have an formula which calculates the intrinsic value of the option irrespective of the trading activity (bid/ask).

This can really be exacerbated by thinly traded options where the bid/ask may be hours or even a day behind. However it does serve as a useful indicator of the direction and target for your option holdings.

If you go to an option calculator like
http://www.optionsprofitcalculator, you will find that on a daily basis, the formula is pretty dang accurate.

      Hope this helps.

It might be using the, “last,” price in the calculation, and sometimes those prices are not reflective of the bid, ask.

Looking at taking on FFIV here near lows – still intact for the Nov 95’s? Or does taking out yesterday’s lows invalidate?

Any thoughts on how to take profits in a breakout like CSUN? No significant trade volume above, the recent highs seem like a reasonable near term resistance.

I’d do it at recent highs. That recent high was the filling of a volume pocket from years back, meaning there is resistance above.
