Fly Movie Review: 1917

A little background on my qualifications to grade this movie. I am a most astute student of the arts, especially cinema. A regular renaissance man who once went on a tangent to see every great movie ever made. I’ve nearly done it and have even delved into foreign films too. All of this makes me an expert and an authority to review the latest war film out of Hollywood: 1917.

First let me say, my expectations were super high, which worked against this film. It wasn’t better than Saving Private Ryan, not even close to as good as Dunkirk, and not in the same arena as Gladiator (double entendre alert!).

This is a movie for the current movie geek. I know since my 16 yr old daughter is an aspiring film director. This movie is heavy on cinematography, okay on story, BIG on marketing A list actors who only get a few lines in the film. What this movie lacks the most, in my estimation, is the score.

Imagine making a war movie without Hans Zimmer?

The emotional tumult of this film was lacking. It was missing atmosphere. I felt like a spectator in a fucking video game, with the one shot style and lack of proper CGI. The only explosives that did detonate, towards the end, actually looked fake and not really menacing. It’s rather ironic that the cinematography didn’t really capture that scene well.

All in all, a solid film — but not best picture of the year. Not even fucking close. Both Joker and Little Women were better.

On a 0-100 scale, I’d rate this a 79%.

This is what score should sound like in a war film.

I haven’t seen 1917 but will certainly do. Kinda happy i read your review as it actually lower my expectation now.
Dunkirk is simply hard to beat. Probably best movie of the decade. I’ve watched 3 times and it just keeps getting better. Some historical anomalies are kinda cringe worthy. Btw, does the director not know you can easily glide an out of fuel plane from dunkirk to dover? but still… disbelief suspended helped by incredible score.

Well, I haven’t seen it but had the expectations that it would capture the horror of preindustrial era war tactics being used criminally naively against the modern industrial war machine. A true humanity fuck up of the biggest order!

Thanks. I will not bother watching it.

I enjoyed Dunkirk and of course Saving Private Ryan.

My Dad was in the Dutch army at the end of WW2. They shot every German soldier who tried to surrender except on the very last day of the war, when they took a 16 year old boy prisoner.

Buy your daughter an online subscription to American Cinematographer. Very inexpensive and a fascinating look at what goes into making movies.
