Also note that federal law requires companies to take corrective action agianst a workplace that is hostiel to peopl based on their *sex*, race, religion, but not on their political leanings.

The PC and legal compulsion for employers to redress differences that do exist in people by hiring base on anything other than merit does great harm. Every favored “victim” group will be look upon with doubt by people ..”did he/she get hired because of their gender?, race? ..or is he/she competent?” And the competent woman, or minority, has a brand new, PC/government-mandated, obstacle to respect to overcome.
That women are, on average, higher in trait neuroticism than men, is a well-established fact. This isn’t a stereotype. That’s just one example of the science that Damore referenced in his memo, for which, he was fired.
shawnji, Surely some diffences do exists between women and men – as population groups. However, people liek yourself always confuse the differnce bweteen popluation and individuals. IE, the disparity in the number of software engineers betwwen males and females is much larger than can be explained by *distributions* of bioloigcal traits.
For a more obvious example, you can also say that men are heavier than women, statisitcally speaking, but there are still a lot of women hevaier than you or me.
I do not think that an unbaised society would have a ~50% female software engineering force, but my point is that it certainly wouldnt have the current 15-20%
