I think you are missing another point with this Tillerson move. Its not just a trade war, I think we are prepping for a real war against Iran (after Trump breaks the nuke pact), together with the Israelis and the Saudis. Tillerson stood in the way of that.

Make America Great Again. Ask why there is a drive for coal, gas and oil production? Why the push to rebuild the steel and aluminum industries? Why the desire to repatriate US dollars? The market had priced in a Hillary win. When that didn’t happen the knee jerk reaction, like most surprises, was to sell first and reasses. Especially in leveraged instruments like futures contracts. Love him or hate him Trump has been a positive for equity markets with his pro-growth policies. A Hillary win would have likely involved a brief rally and then stagnation.
I believe when the context of CB-stewardship over several years is factored, it has much more weight, over other possibilities. Investors are not trading after hours futures markets. Those are highly leveraged instruments that traders use as a hedge. As for investors, mutual fund inflows were actually up in January of 2018 after the election.
