DOWNTOWN MIAMI IS UNDERWATER

Uh, oh. This isn’t good for our local insurance outfits. The seawall is gone. Miami is now part of the ocean.

BONUS: Here’s a man trying to measure Irma’s winds.

Roof ripped off in Miami.

I worked on Flagler and 1st for several years which is in the middle of Downtown Miami. I have been watching the Weather Channel and to me the damage looks limited. No windows blown out, building collapses, etc.
They keep showing the Brickell Ave. area which is otherwise known as US 1 (called Useless 1 by the natives) and is just south of the Miami River and one block or so from Biscayne Bay.
The flooded streets are to be expected and many of the condos and office buildings were built in the last 15-20 years with the toughest building code around. It’s not like the eye came through the area.
I saw street flooding once when we had 20 inches in a summer thunderstorm and several hours later it was dry. The area is built on coral rock and sand.

Just saw the Weather Channel and he was standing in a couple of feet of water on Brickell (from the storm surge) and he says downtown Miami is flooded. I say nonsense. Go a few blocks into the heart of Downtown (Flagler to I-95) and I bet you won’t see this kind of flooding.

          Probably, yes- a bunch.
You know how the game is played.
Price in the bad news and when the event is over stick it to the shorts as the news is usually not as bad as the anticipation (too bad though- it was up on Friday).
Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward damage will be limited.
Much depends on Tampa Bay area but I think it will do fine.
Off to take an old man’s nap as I’ll be up all night because our nasty weather comes in after midnight and I always walk around checking for any damage.

I’m now convinced these hurricanes are some sort of conspiracy created by the auto industry to clear out their September inventory.

Fly you will make money because it did not hit the east coast. From the video you linked I’m not seeing 10 feet of storm surge. I know Brickell and it could have 4 inches of water from rain events that happen from time to time. Same with many streets on Miami Beach. I recall Alton Road as a sheet of water with the curb flowing like a fast creek Actually saw an old man fall into it, head in water, and someone pulled him out.

Despite my tone here about water levels, very sorry about those who are suffering and have been devastated.
