Katrina Commander Slams Harvey Response: ‘Stop Patting Yourselves on the Back’; This is ‘Amateur Hour’

Lt. Gen. Honore was in charge of the Katrina response in New Orleans 12 years ago and warned CNN’s Eric Burnett that ‘night is coming’ — saying it was going to get a lot worse before it got better.

Honore carefully crafted his words and slammed the response in Houston as being grossly inadequate, disgusted by the fact that they didn’t even have 100 helicopters in the city to do search and rescues. He harkened back to the Katrina rescue plan where the 5th army (engineers) used a ‘significant grid system’ for search and rescue. Now, according to Honore, ‘it looks like no one in Texas ever read the plan.’

“You have to come in big and you’ve got to be there right at the edge of the storm so you can come in as soon as possible and go in and rescue people.

Back during Katrina, Honore said they had 240 helicopters and 40,000 national guard within the first 4 days, orders of magnitude more than what’s on the ground in Texas now.

“They just got 100 helicopters here. Something is significantly wrong with command and control and they need to stop patting each other on the back who are waiting to get rescued.”

“I know I’m sounding critical,” Honore acknowledged as he called for an “Army response to local civil disasters.

“They’ve come upon a time when their mission is too big for the state National Guard — and they need to get the hell over it and bring them in when they have a big mission.”

My gramps always said don’t send in a helicopter to do a lifted Ford F-250’s job.

Remember when Bush hated black people and had the worst hurricane response of all time?

Yeah, now Bush’s response was great!

Katrina was such a disaster. This guy should be hanged for being a moron. New Orleans descended into chaos with running gun battles between the police and the street gangs. Police walking off the force and even participating in the looting. The Superdome was a mass of gang rape and crime. That won’t happen in Houston and this is nothing like Katrina.

Sort of sure it is 2017. And Bush is irrelevant. We are all praying for Texas. That is what Americans do. Along with all those ignorant bible belt people. Racing around helping one another. Could be wrong. CNN could be lighting the candle of truth.

I know someone in Houston who already has helped cut out damaged drywall from a friend’s house. There are people who will do their best to take care of themselves and neighbors and friends.

You guys wouldn’t believe the pics I took yesterday showing all of the outpouring of assistance and support from Houston residents when we were out donating supplies to the local shelters. Literally clearing the shelves at all grocery stores, Costco, Target and Walmart for the sole purpose of delivering to people in need.

We waited 20 minutes in a line of cars that circled around BBVA stadium to drop off bedding. One guy a few cars up from us had an entire pallet of new towels in the back of his dually. People were delivering truckloads of supplies. All private citizens assisting perfect strangers in need.

As a non-native Texan and a pessimist of human nature, I was impressed with the display of compassion from so many Houstonians. It was truly amazing to see such communal self reliance and order. No way could it be even vaguely compared to the mass pandemonium and anarchy that happened in NOLA post Katrina.

Why even bother judging this now? Let’s just hope people are rescued. It will take at least 1 more week to figure out the damage in terms of loss of life and property, and even longer to judge the response. That being said, it seems like things are going better than the very low bar set by the Katrina response.
