In a Pentagon press briefing today, General Mattis said he ‘personally reviewed’ the intelligence that pointed to Assad being responsible for carrying out chemical attacks, concluding that the Syrian government was guilty.
He ‘determined a measured military response could best deter the regime from doing this again’. He said, ‘under the direction of the President, they conducted military actions against Syria to deter the use of chemical weapons.’
They ‘ensured that no Russians were injured during the attack.’ U.S. policy is unchanged on Syria, with ISIS being the main target for American military operations.
Naturally, the press tried to goad Mattis into making statements on ‘safe zones’ and removing Assad, which Mattis was unwilling to commit.
‘The goal right now in Syria is breaking ISIS,’ said Mattis. Moreover, the Assad issue was a ‘separate issue that arose in the midst of that campaign’, which they addressed militarily.
‘The purpose of this attack was singular, against the chemical weapons use,’ said Mattis.
When asked is Russia had ‘advanced knowledge’ of this strike, Mattis said ‘Assad planned it, orchestrated it and executed it’ and he didn’t know if Russia was involved. Regarding recent press reports that declared a Russia drone was seen overhead at the time of the attack, Mattis said he didn’t know anything about it, only that he was sure Assad was responsible — drawing a firm line not to drag Russia into the discussion.
This is good news for those hoping to avert a military conflict with Russia and the Syrian government. Let’s hope Mattis has enough sway inside of the White House to cool the heads of all the chicken hawks making statements about regime change in Syria.

Ridiculous. This shows an ignorance of the context of the Syrian civil war. ISIS is only wanted in Syria because many Syrians will take any help they can get, in order to stop Assad from butchering them– even if that help is from ISIS.
Now the U.S. is telling Assad “Don’t massacre all your people with chemical weapons. Use conventional weapons to do it.” So he will. And millions of refugees will still flee from the cities he destroys. And he will still kill babies, but with conventional weapons.
If we really wanted to get rid of ISIS in Syria, we’d get rid of Assad. That’s the only reason ISIS is there– to fight Assad. If we wipe Assad out, they won’t need ISIS. But then we would have to be concerned about who would be the next ruler after Assad, and whether he would be just as bad or worse.
No we’re fighting against people– Assad and ISIS– who are fighting against each other. Why not just stay away and let those two parties fight one another? Why try to weaken one party and then try to weaken their enemy too? It makes no sense. Unless your goal is just to make money for the MIC by taking both sides in a conflict.

Of course you’re misinformed. The place in Syria to which refugees are finding a “safe zone” are government controlled areas. This includes Sunni Syrians as well as the minorities that have traditionally been most supportive of Assad. One thing that unites all religions and tribes in the very diverse country of Syria is hatred of foreign manipulators and of the US and Israel in particular. We have proven over and over again that we cannot play a constructive role in this region. Our politics here do not allow it.
