Just because everything appears to alright, I figured it was time to douse you with a little reality–if I might be so bold. Let’s have a look at the perversion of finance as we know it, the negative yielding government bond. Due to the massive and unsustainable levels of debt, western governments, and the mad scientists in Japan, figured out a way to monetize their own debt. To do this, they started to print money, for the explicit purposes of buying their own debt. The result has been a dramatic one. Central banks now own their own debt, derisking the possibility of a foreign entity fucking with yields by selling their bonds. And, to boot, they’ve managed to buy so much of the shit, yields have not only gone to zero, but in many cases negative.
In other words, governments are now making money by borrowing money. The more they borrow, the more they make.
What can go wrong?
Let’s have a look around the globe, children, to see what those bonds are up to.
Austria- negative yields up to 7 yr duration
Belgium- negative yields up to 7 yr duration
Bulgaria- negative yields on 1 mo duration, in fucking gypsy land.
Denmark- negative yields up to 5 yr duration
Finland- negative yields up to 6 yr duration
France- negative yields up to 6 yr duration
Germany- negative yields up to 8 yr duration
Ireland- negative yields up to 5 yr duration
Italy- negative yields up to 3 yr duration
Japan- negative yields up to 10 yr duration
Netherlands- negative yields up to 7 yr duration
Slovakia- negative yields up to 4 yr duration (not a typo)
Spain- negative yields up to 2 yr duration
Sweden- negative yields up to 5 yr duration
Switzerland- negative yields up to 15 yr duration
Negative yielding sovereign debt now tops $7 trillion, or 30% of all debt, globally.

Making money by borrowing money? Sounds good. I should start a country so I can borrow money from myself and make money doing so. I’ll name it Frog Country.
Frog country already exists. It’s called France.

Yeah @Frog government is such a great allocater of capital just look at the wonderful TSA
Government unfortunately can’t get better, more efficient, or less corrupt until we can have a conversation about that and focus on doing that. At present, we can not talk about that, because that conversation has been eclipsed by the conversation about whether or not government is so evil that it should not exist at all.
I’m telling you this: TIPS are going to be the deal of the decade soon, if they aren’t already.
And the nicest thing about US debt is that it isn’t Japanese debt. They are the canary in the coal mine.
In theory TIPS should survive. But the same government playing with rates can also monkey with the CPI. Trust no one.
Yes, but the monkeying can only go so far. They allowed it to go above 5% in 2008.
Also, since the market is aware of the data tweaking, that is priced into the bonds so that the base implied interest rate is higher than it would be without tweaking.
BTW, a “trust no one” philosophy would mean that you only invest in things that you could directly use yourself, which would pretty much eliminate all asset classes except real estate (and even then you have to trust that your Deed will be honored). You’d probably just own a farm.
Why are you staying so superficial like every body else? Why no conclusions, nothing? Why not think and try to understand what’s going on instead of blindly accepting things for what they are and buying tlt?
You’re a moron of the very first magnitude.
Great arguments… Go read the piece written by Bill Gross today. Try to make an effort for god’s sake.
