Saturday Cinema with Le Fly: Suspicion

The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, was a true psychopath. I’ve recently seen a biopic about the man and there are many, many things disturbing and unsettling about him. Perhaps it was that “uniqueness” that gave Hitch the edge he needed over his competitors? I think so.

Suspicion pairs one of my favorite leading actors (Cary Grant) and director (Hitchcock) to produce a delightful film about a guy who’s really interested in the finer things in life, but doesn’t necessarily want to work for them. Grant, a hugely underrated comedic actor, entertains the audience from the beginning to end.

Oh, and the milk scene: you’ll know it when it happens. Very cool. There was actually controversy about this film when it originally aired and the ending was changed, to better suite the pious America of that era. Google it for further insight, AFTER you’ve seen it.

I’m going to watch these Hitchcock films as you review them. Most of what I’ve seen are his short stories. “Specialty of the House” being a personal favorite.

“The Church” forbade going to the picture shows when I was a child, and my father’s lone entertainment interest was prized-fighting. Just never got into the habit of movies as entertainment. Cinema contains much unexplored territory for me…

After Suspicion, Hitchcock made a point of only filming exactly the scenes he wanted to prevent the studio from doing exactly this kind of re-editing again. Apparently the outtakes from Psycho would barely fit a quarter of a reel…(or so I’ve heard)

Kind of like an artist making songs without breakdowns in order to prevent club DJs from mixing out half way through the song.

You could do a series on movies that were game changers; that hinged our culture in some way.
Like The Graduate, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now. The last one especially.

But an entire generation resonated to the word “Plastics.” Plus the Simon and Garfunkle music.

Actually, now that I think about it, were you even born then? What movie blew your mind when you were 20?
