Saturday Cinema With Le Fly: Dr. Strangelove

Holy shit this was a good movie. This was one of the first Kubrick movies that I watched after Barry Lyndon and had zero expectations. I thought it’d be dated, hammy, slapstick comedy, in the school of Jerry Lewis. But this movie is just as relevant and fresh today as it was when it was made, in 1964.

One of my favorite actors, George C. Scott, plays a lunatic general in this movie, not so different from the role he played in Patton, only with a lot more comedy. It’s interesting to note that this movie pre-dates Patton and might’ve been the reason why Scott was chosen for that glorious role.

Look you, don’t just take my word for it. Go rent the damned thing and enjoy the splendid horrors of imminent nuclear war.

Way back when I lived near SAC HQ in Omaha. They showed this movie on TV about every other week. Guys at the base loved it. Every single one of them would ride the bomb down, if that’s what it took.

True gutbuster in a sly way. Hard to go wrong with the pink panther himself in multiple roles and Slim is also great

Classic movies are like a long strange meaningless date. Hillary 2016 is about to change the world too. Hide the jewels fellas.

Do you like Peter Sellers’ performance(s)? Long ago, when I lived North of the border, the Canucks worshipped all things British and Sellers was revered but he has been dead a while now.

The full title of the movie was a great one: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,

One of my all-time favorites as well. Even funnier if you’ve watched “Fail-Safe”, the “straight” version of a nuclear mistake scenario. Sellers was originally supposed to also play the role of Major Kong, but after completing the other three roles, he broke his ankle and was in such pain that he was unable to do it. So it was given to Slim Pickens. The final scene (cut from the film) involved a gigantic and messy pie fight. Stills from this scene can be found on the web and the footage does exist but is kept under tight wraps by the Kubrick estate and remains generally unseen to this day. From the description of it, that seems just as well.
