Directed by Carol Reed, in Britain, The Third Man is one of the best films ever made. Starring Citizen Kane alumni, Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, the film paved the way for lots of ‘atmospheric’ films to come, including a classic made by Welles himself several years later, called Touch of Evil.
It’s classic film noir. Although Welles’ part wasn’t that big, it certainly had a profound effect on the movie (extra Harry Lime).
It’s worth noting that Welles rewrote much of his character’s part, responsible for the film’s most memorable moments (extra cuckoo clock).
Addendum: This is a superb short film, reenacting Orson practicing his lines for The Third Man.
EXTRA: There are several Welles films floating around youtube– free to watch. Having seen them all, I’ll be highlighting my favorites each week.
In my estimation, this is the best version of Jane Eyre ever made (1943).

Welles was so far ahead of his time. There was a decent documentary about him last year at Telluride called “Magician.” It makes the point that William Randolph Hearst wasn’t the only person he pissed off. In those days, a couple of people in the film business could pretty much end your career.
I know you’re also a Kubrick fan, and Jan Harlan’s “A Life in Pictures” was very good doc about him. I think Harlan was his brother-in-law at the time, otherwise he probably wouldn’t have cooperated with the making of the film.
Kubrick would’ve had a better career, had it not been for the distraction of having to FAKE THE LUNAR LANDING on behalf of the U.S. Govt
Lolz.
100%
Oh no! Not you too! I hope you’re not serious. Slippery slope; before you know it you’ll be hoarding gold.
LOL. That would be interesting. Would Fly need to change the site name then to ihoardgold.com?
Welles was a master of lighting, highlighting cobbled streets in the night
Great music too
btw, I watched the “Muppet Movie” today. Not really my thing but it is good. Did I see a character, twice, that would be an homage to Orson Welles? Maybe, I just connected what I saw to Orson Welles b/c you planted an Orson Welles bug in my brain; power of suggestion and all.
When will we see a review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation?
I always found the gypsyesque music in The Third Man to be both jarring and a perfect fit with the film.
