We Live in Interesting Times

I just heard a staggering statistic. The average price for a roach infested apartment in NYC is now $1.6 million, up 17% year over year. I don’t have numbers available to me, but real estate in Brooklyn is equally insane, with Brownstones selling for north of $3 million when they were literally $200k 15 years ago. All of the bastard hipsters want to live in Brooklyn. It’s so funny, seeing the gentrification of certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn. These same neighborhoods were death traps when I was a teenager, places where you’d go to get robbed and killed, tossed onto the tracks into an oncoming train. It’s amazing how ‘safe’ NYC has become over the past 20 years.

I know some of you hillbillies from flyover country doubt me (quit rolling your fucking eyes). But my fellow New Yorkers can attest to the fact that crime is a fraction of what is was back in the 90s. The net result of peace and prosperity has led to a monumental increase in NYC real estate prices, a true model for the savage ham and eggers cutting each others clavicles in the middled east.

That’s all we really need, don’t we? Give man an opportunity to thrive and he will do it, in both science and technology. We are living in memorable times and most of you take it for granted. Discard the notion that gold bars mean something to you. One thousand years hence, the history books will reflect back on the times we are living now and discuss the nascency of the internet–a time when singularity became reality. Man and machine coupled for the betterment of mankind. Information disseminated rapidly, shared globally, ushering in a new era of enlightenment.

You little trollops look at this blog post with a skeptical eye, thinking the world is over and society is nothing more than a helter skelter of bedraggled microbes. Believe you me, no one fights the negative wave of pessimism more than me. But you are wrong. These are incredible times and there will be fortunes to be made, from the modern day Vanderbilt empire called Uber to the Amazon hegemony, times are changing.

Now are you still looking to buy those fucking gold bricks, you cave man?

The Renaissance of our cities over the last 20 years has been amazing. I’m raising kids in an urban neighborhood that I wouldn’t walk in at night 20 years ago. Kids thrive in cities too, something I didn’t appreciate until I had them.

Actually seriously thinking of selling, banking some of our equity, and buying a place about half the size square footage (kids out and married with good careers and thus not moving back).
Don’t know to go urban or stay in the area.
Downsizing from 3 acres, 20 minutes to downtown Orlando, 5 minutes (15 on a bike) to corporate HQs like AAA, Ticondoroga, numerous software Co’s.
Plus you get bears (in pool and up in trees), foxes, gopher tortoises, etc.
What to do? Urban v. burbs.

GPRO is insanely overvalued. One day, it might be back to $20 from whence it came. But for now, we must buy.

I’m generally amazed at the changes in NYC. I still remember driving near Canal Street in the 90s and being assaulted by squeegee men at every light.

It was in London too… but lately their prices have been crashing and what would have sold months ago has just sat, unsought; not bought.

I used to work with a Puerto Rican guy who had blue eyes and was medium complected. He used to go to school in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. He told me he was beaten up in school constantly by guys who thought he was white (yes, heavy ESL accent). The Big Apple is not the center of human evolution.

Is there really less crime? Or did the criminals get relocated to other areas of NYC?

I used Urban Dictionary and here is a definition:
How the gardeners will take over the world

“How did that gardener pay for those guns?”
      “Hegemony”

Higher prices = less poor people living there = less crime. Chicago on the otherhand is going the opposite direct with people moving out of the city but prices are still high(er). I would not live in the city again if you paid me.

Lets see, many things to say about this post:

NYC was shit back in the day because of higher drug use fueling gang violence. Now that pot is the drug of choice amongst the masses, NYC has seen a renaissance.

White flight is occurring in the suburbs or de facto segregation in the cities, pushing up prices either way. For suburban white flight, see St. Louis (Ferguson). For segregation see Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods, Chicago.

The internet makes it both easier and harder to control the masses, but a lot of good will come out of this internet age.

Finally, it could be possible people will look back and wonder why we didn’t buy more gold bars when the government was printing so many dollars.

      Gap –
Chicago is seeing massive re-urbanization (see West loop, fulton district, old town, even pilsen). Mayor Emanuel, with the help of his bud Obama, is doing a really nice job of attracting industry back to the heart of the city. The World Business Chicago program is a huge win and will continue to drive migration back into the city.

My only comment on the violence in Chicago is that the South side and North side are two separate cities.

My upstairs neighbors bought their 2 bedroom flat for $1.3mm, then sold it for $1.9mm 18 months later. Everywhere is safer, I take Lyft when I don’t want to drive, and I can find parking on my phone.

If I feel like renting an Audi R8, I open GetAround and I reserve one. Momentous times, so onward and upward.

I can only imagine how drafty and cold some of the vintage highrises must be. Cheap natural gas is helpful but be wary should that change. Thanks for the hillbillies reference, come and see us. I live directly under a very, very busy flight path to Europe, please don’t anyone drop an engine.
