I’M AN OIL MAN

I’ve been an oil man ever since the day I was born. I was raised under a derrick in Brooklyn, NY, bearing witness to the black gold spewing from the ground–making all of the local peasants sick from exposure.

I understand that the price of oil has dropped a good 20% in recent weeks, sending most small drillers, those ill-equipped to handle the burden of price fluctuation, inexorably, into the ‘fag box.’ However, all of that is about to change.

The godly run in the United States dollar will ease up and commodities will catch a bid. God willing, the maniacs in the middled east will begin to truly cut each other’s heads off in earnest, seizing ports and strategically vital oil producing districts of their barren lands–lending, mind you, to a sharp rally in the price of WTI and Brent crude. Our friends in the House of Saud prefer to have higher prices, but will punish others with lower prices, if need be.

I cannot promise you that the recent rout in energy shares is over. As a matter of fact, it has a bit of a 6th inning feel to it. But I will tell you this, very simply: this drop, this seasonal malaise, will ultimately lead to the best trade of 2014. This is it. Nothing else will offer you ‘castration level’ returns, barring some sort of crazed run in the shippers–which might occur in December. Jot that down.

The price of these energy stocks are factoring in $65-70 crude. This is a mistake and the market will eventually come to realize that.

Here are some ideas, with 3 month returns next to it.

SDRL -38%

PDS -31%

WRES -21%

HK -51%

WTI -35%

OAS -29%

RDC -22%

ESV -28%

HERO -50%

KEG -48%

AREX -40%

BBG -26%

NBR -29%

CRZO -29%

VNOM -29%

CHK -26%

TLM -22%

UPL -23%

SGY -37%

CVEO -52%

GDP -51%

Now tell me, does this look like a rational 3 month decline or something more relating to hedge fund liquidation and capitulation?

I dream of having monster positions in OAS and CHK. Would you ever dabble in FI?

Offshore drillers are definitely suffering from “low” priced low crude, as many of the projects they would be drilling require prices of 100 or better. So, the recovery of the likes of SDRL could be a ways off unless the Almighty Dollar has a trained-wreck in double time.

i disagree. drillers are not suffering so much from low oil prices as they are on ROE’s in the permian/EF. The market is just way late waking up to this fact. If oil rallies $20 it isn’t changing the recent capital allocation onshore versus offshore – which is why dayrates are most likely screwed either way. Be careful holding these for any period of time (or at all).

Geologist here. GDP is a horrendous company. All their “new” production comes Tuscaloosa marine shale wells that cost 15-18 million PER WELL. 3x what eagle ford wells cost, it’s an expensive science experiment. However CRZO is the best in breed on this list.

GDP does blow. I only listed it because it will bounce hard, whenever the sector pushes up.

FANG, CLR, CXO and BCEI are best in breed.

Agree Sir Fly. Would add PXD and EOG to this list. But they haven’t fallen as much relatively and still have an underlying bid. CXO is a monster.

I like FANG and BCEI, and also uncle Claty’s CWEI, it should rally hard (this year went 65 to 145 Feb to April) whenever it turns up.

GDP well costs are not that high anymore. And comparing the drilling costs of an emerging basin play to a mature one makes me question if you are actually a geologist

Just pointing out that even for an emerging play GDP’s well costs are very high. Regardless of emerging play versus developed play it’s an insane amount of $$ to spend trying to ‘figure out’ a new play. Experiments elsewhere don’t cost that much. Obviously cost will go down with development. If they were smart they’d just sell the TMS stuff and figure out where to go elsewhere.

I’ve been long OAS since the start of the year, and will stay long with them. I would put them in best of breed with FANG, CLR, and WLL. Also, TPLM is a great small cap play and underpriced (like them all), but has also shown strength and resilience.
