This is the perfect scenario for volatility. No one believes congress will willingly crush the spirits and souls of investors, via a self inflicted/catastrophic default. HOWEVER, that’s exactly what they’re going to do, AND MORE.
When it happens, everyone is going to freak out, running around like chickens without heads. At that juncture in time, “The Fly” will be snacking on protein, drinking creatine shakes and generally chuckling at the drama.
So far, during my lifespan, I’ve learned to trust no one, not even Santa Claus. If you’re buying stocks here, you are trusting congress to act rationally. Now tell me, is that a rational bet on your behalf?

Oh, by the way, MODN announced they will begin firing people. That is exactly what they need to do, in order to preserve value for shareholders. With a smaller headcount, their burn will be less; hence, their net cash position, which is now $4.50 per share, is even more attractive.

I suggest you go buy a skinny Pumpkin Spice Latte, spike it with Redbreast 12, then mute CNBC and play Mystery Science Theater 3k all afternoon. Surely you have made yourself robot friends by now.

Or perhaps it’s the economy that politicians for decades have been screwing with to put us in position where 40% of the foreigners own our debt and over 70% of the government income just goes towards paying interest anyways. The tea party holding the government hostage is a case of them coming late to the construction of the financial house and seeing that the foundation was already screwed up… i.e. structurally the global economy is unsound (Bretton Woods, US reserve currency, floating vs fixed exchange, individual euro bonds with only one central currency,etc).
On the other hand, and more significantly, I don’t think necessarily blowing up an entire building because the foundation was flawed is always the best approach like the tea party wants to do. Then again, you could equally accuse Obama and the democrats of intentionally not leading or compromising one bit while accusing the republicans of doing that same thing; hoping the us defaults with the belief that they would have a dominant majority after 2014 when they throw the republicans house majority out.
It’s a giant political game of chicken and so far no one is blinking.

VXX costs you a “fazmobile tax” for being that kind of product. Buying it today also costs you a “panic tax/fear premium” for buying it today rather than 2 days ago or whatever.
Just ask yourself if it’s worth paying an extra dollar per share or so for insurance when many other people are getting increasingly worried about the same things you are.
