As I thought, I’m getting screwed by cliff deal. Rates only go up over $450k, but deductions phased out over $250k. May be worse off under this than if marginal rates just went up for income over $250k. Fuckers.

Well, you should. Not sure what you make, but it’s plain stupid to tax someone making $250,000.00 several thousand dollars more than the guy making $249,999.99. Don’t you want to incentivize guys to work hard to earn that bonus or earn that promotion that would shift them to that income level? Why earn that $5,000 bonus by working several late nights if you pay $7,000 more in taxes? May not sound like a big deal, but it is when looking at how many people it affects.
That’s not how taxes work. A phase-out works like a higher marginal rate over the phase-out income range. The effective marginal tax RATE jumps at 250k, but there’s no jump in taxes due when you go from 249,999 to 250,001.
That’s a relief, assuming it’s accurate (I still can’t find an authoritative summary that addresses that issue). I’d heard that it would work like I expressed above, rather than being a gradual phase-out. Thanks for the thoughts here.
