I was having an interesting discussion the other day about how I sold CMG, AAPL, MNST, BWLD, and a host of others, at much lower prices. I don’t get mad about missing out because I know there are always new winners to be had, a chance to get it right. Before the discussion moved into the realm of outright vagrancy, we talked about some names worth mentioning.
Clearly, the next big thing was AAPL, CMG, PCLN, LULU, ISRG, PNRA, AZO, CRM, WFM, GMCR, NEU, SAM gold/silver etc. The question is, what’s next?
Will DDD move into the sex industry, allowing perverts to “print” dildos at home, sending the stock to a gazillion? Will PNRA continue to trail blaze higher, just like CMG? Will natural gas trucks become a reality, sending shares of CLNE much higher? Will CREE finally make it big in LED? Or, will NFLX get back on track and finish Blockbuster?
If I had to choose three companies that have the potential to become mega-trends, I’d pick TEA, YELP and TRIP. When I think about all of the current super-trends, the common denominator is I use them all. I can’t live without my Apple products and find myself eating at CMG, whenever given the chance. When I was an avid coffee drinker, I loved GMCR. And, ever since I started to eat healthy, I’ve been shopping at WFM.
Well, I don’t book hotel or restaurant reservations without the help of TRIP and YELP. And, ever since I switched over to consuming tea over coffee, for health benefits, I get my fix from TEA.
What super-trends do you see coming in the not-so-distant future? Or do you think this is all HORSESHIT and the next big trend is to bet against it all via FAZ, TZA and VXX?

interesting last sentence
Bet against it all. I took an unauthorized joyride on your space time machine (sorry)and can now guarantee that one month from now the market will be sharply lower.
Stacking my chips on the don’t pass line
However, you can still make money on the lay bet while playing the back line
Mayan temples…be the first on your block.
CMG ain’t healthy, brah
I know. I used to eat there a long time ago. Now I eat there once a year or so.
hahahaha.
Bearshitters
Is this super trend finished?
Twitter IPO is the biggest. It will make people trillions. Aside from that, cyber security ala FTNT etc.
WFM cant lose either. TOMS shoes, Forever 21, Five Guys if they IPO
Totally agree. I see my teenage nieces (and their entire high schools) have discovered twitter, are tweeting like crazy, and have pretty much dropped facebook as their social outlet.
Bingo. The biggest thing I noticed during Super Bowl ads this year were the switch from “visit us on facebook” to having a #companyname
Yea, it’s used all the time, but howTF does it make any money?
I am looking at internet provided content for internet connected TV. Cable companies are about to go the way of the horse and buggy. Feel like something around free or near free content aggregations into TVs will be the next big thing.
It’s not public yet, but Twitter. It’s a completely new web experience and I find myself querying it more and more when researching.
You can smell bullshit quickly on Twitter. I’ll keep my core GSVC holding until a better option for owning Twitter exists.
I agree. My only reservation is recent look into the company. It’s run like a fucking auto maker, idiotic overhead.
Anything craft beer related as well. The industry is fucking ripping with triple digit y/y growth
HOOK?
$ABV
Yes, as of now HOOK is the only play. A strong takeover candidate, although I’m not too crazy about their products. One to watch though…
SAM went gangster.
Have to agree, reading many blogs and some magazine subscriptions the one common theme among brewers is that they cannot keep up with demand. From what I’ve found SAM & HOOK (mentioned by The Fly) are the only 2 close ones that are considered craft breweries.
Tory Burch too, chick crack.
whats with tory burch? my aunt who was a doctor purchased a bag and some shoes from there when we were vacationing in san fracisco. asked my uncle he said that all the other doctors was tired of their gucci and LV Tory Burch was something different i guess.

rof candy man
$TRIP??? Did you just start using the internet? LOL, how about Kayak…or Orbitz..or Jetsetter for Christ sakes.
What’s wrong with TRIP? There is no better website and why are you acting like you know what the fuck you are talking about?
I don’t trust review sites. You give half these people a free continental breakfast and they rate it 5 stars.
I disagree only regarding TRIP and YELP.
I eat out and travel a lot and both sites are dead on and viral.
trip got some business from me when i booked a hotel in china from there.
just looked at the chart(trip) it looks flat compared to priceline.
priceline looks parabolic
TripAdvisor is the greatest thing to happen to vacationing. Obviously some reviews will be worthless but use your brain. In the aggregate, the service it provides is unparalleled. There is no better alternative out there.
Your CPST pick has potential. If oil / gasoline prices continue to rise, natural gas could become a much larger producer of energy. CPST makes natgas micro generators.
Just bought my new 11″ mac air to schlep around. Do too much writing to get an ipad.
Now I own: 2 mac airs, extreme airport, apple TV, Powerbook 17.” I was in the apple store on 14th st and 9th ave yesterday around 5pm. It was jammed, and not just with tourists.
Whatever the next big thing is, aapl will be a major part of it.
My current long-term positions: CREE, CA, RTI, CPK, TSM, SHLM, TRC. 40% invested in my long-term. 60% cash.
Trading acct: 50% cash.
MSFT, INTC, GSVC, WNR, ETFC, BPOP, QCOM, TLT, ALJ and a couple of others. Mixed bag.
Oh, and the iphone of course…
Well you must be very proud of yourself.
Where do you buy your skinny jeans?
AAPL products are for women and those that enjoy spending more money for technologically inferior products. I don’t knock their success, but it has become a cult and stopped acting as an innovator.
I get my skinny jeans at AAPL, of course. Duh!
The point was simply to illustrate the idea of aapl being a strong future trend.
But I guess it sucks to be you when you could have been steve jobs, doesn’t it?
I’ve been eying CTRP. If consumerism is indeed coming back, I want to be long a stock that has negative headline risk vis a vis China. If everyone has been wrong, I want to be where they are the most wrong. American consumerism is symbiotic to Chinese growth and hence, their migration to affluence.
I like its technical level here too.
We have become China…when the numbers are not good we just lie about it.
The rest of the world has inflation except for the U.S. according to the latest reports.
But if you do the shopping in your family or buy gas or pay the heating bill or water bill you know it is here in the U.S. as well, just doesn’t show up on U.S. government report.
What? Milk and gas and orange juice everything delivered with gas is just as cheap today as it was 4 years ago! 😉
A few others: VHC, T, GDXJ, RGLD, D…
Whoever owns Toms shoes – I was on a film set last week populated by a lot of decidedly untrendy, independent and brOke girls and they were almost wearing Toms.
Mrs Subcomandante wears them, too.
So Toms it is.
Toms is private, but I can see them being bought by Zappos (Amazon)
Have you seen the knock off Bob’s? They’re hilarious, half the cost, and have the same give the poor a pair shtick.
FAZ Mobile
AMZN
With Direct Green Lasers about to enter the market, how about old favorite Microvision, Fly? They need to raise some cash, but once they’re funded, what are your thoughts on their prospects?
They blew their chance.
This isn’t England. People don’t sit down and have a leisurely tea in this country. We live in a fast paced, balls to the wall environment. Coffee is our drink, and we are sticking with it.
I suspect TEA will never take off like Starfucks or GMCR.
You are not seeing the big picture. TEA is a global company.
Are they in China/Asia? Wonder what the tea-drinking dynamics are there. SBUX filled a wide hole in the American coffee culture just as it was ramping up.
Still, I’m paying attention…
With coffee there are a multitude of espresso drinks. These drinks offer extremely high gross margins.
What are the corresponding tea specialty drinks that will offer the same margins?
Not only that, but EVERY 20-something girl I know making over $40k/year is more than happy to blow $100 at a time MONTHLY at TEA. My generation is getting hooked on the stuff, and I see TEA replicas all over South Florida. I hadn’t caught on until The FLY brought it up several months ago, but the company’s a powerhouse in the making. I need to get a better feel for upper management, but this isn’t just a high-end phenomenon: it’s hitting middle class young people as well as those with more refined tastes.
Further, has anyone looked at the markup on their accessories?! I blew $300 there a few years ago on a teapot for mothers day, and that’s before I even started buying the damned tea! No way they paid more than $40 for the thing.
You are a dumbass paying $300 for a $40 teapot.
Next trend up is Chinese made Disco Balls in American car washes. Buy CTDC-China Technology Development Co. @.81 per share today.
I don’t know the next biggest trend because I’m reaching the age when I’m no longer invited on iBC. Although, I have learned the way to determine it.
You need to ask your 18-24 year old buddies what they like to consume.
For example, several years ago a buddy at work who had just graduated college told me he drinks 3 monsters a day. I should have picked up on that and asked the other 20 somethings if they did the same thing.
Same thing with Netflix, Facebook, and Twitter. I found out about all of those from 20 somethings at work.
FLY , have you ever traded TMV ? Volatile ,
but would think we’d see a 100 rather quickly
after a few days of stabilty .
i could see 3d printing and LED stuff becoming huge, but as usual probably the ultimate winners in those fields will be companies that don’t yet exist or are not yet listed. analytical data companies. MSFT kinect type crap has all kinds of potential.
short to medium term i see commodity related things as a trend, all those chinese and indian people want to eat food, while we’re burning corn in our cars and printing money etc. etc., old story but still true I feel. gold is not useful for anything, but same thesis
All things Natty
Fly, gimme an address to send you some real tea. You need to upgrade from the plebian shit from TEA
Oh, and as candidate for the next big thing, I humbly submit: DNDN.
Maybe developing a different class of kid friendly adult socially interactive restaurants, transportation, and resorts for families since the movement of “No Kids Allowed” is growing.
The next big super-trend is too hard. Go with what’s working today, follow the existing trend. That list in your main post is really good.
Indeed.
Master Fly held APPL for a long time, I remember when he sold the last of his shares. That was some 400 points lower…
I opened up a half position in Arch Coal at 11.65 last week. It is ripping now…along with my CSX, to the tune of ~ 6 percent. I think the Nat gas futures might rally on a short squeeze to 2.40s…
Well a nat gas rally is unlikely, but Arch is yielding around 4 percent, and the bonds are telling me that nobody is concerned with bankruptcy. Plus there is takeover chatter regarding the name. Even if it goes to $10 on sub $2 nat gas, (which I expect), the dividend will cover the 20 percent loss in a few years. Also watch FIO if it holds $30
Nice, I’m glad u have noticed DDD lol.
I bought a 3D printer from a smaller company in Brooklyn called Makerbot for $2,250.
These new 3D rapid prototyping printers are going to be a huge market soon.
DDD and SSYS are the best bet for now…maybe HPQ if they can get their shit together.
i have seen that machine,i couldnt believe my eyes.
yeah, regardless DDD ripped tits for me since January. I sold last Friday but I really want to get back in at $20
Znga is going to be the next big trend, as our words with friends showdown leads to a 600% increase in their game usage.
This commentator believes super trends will at the very least include, mobile tech, harsh environment deep-water drilling, LNG transport and storage, bio tech genetic engineering of drug side-effects and bio-hazard protection.
“mobile tech, harsh environment deep-water drilling, LNG transport and storage, bio tech genetic engineering of drug side-effects and bio-hazard protection.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Harsh environment exploration is going to be huge as well. I’ve got some ground floor action going on in that respect. Let’s just say the Deep Horizon Spill and subsequent cleanup/analysis wasn’t a total bust for BP.
Hey Fly,
I’ve been drinking only green tea for a while after my cousin brought back some gunpowder tea from china in December. Teavana was alot more expensive that TheTeaspot in Boulder. Do you know if there’s any difference in quality and which varieties are the best?
John Hoffmeister is such a lying piece of shit. He fails to mention that Big Oil,
exporting oil and gas at record rates from
the USA, and closing refineries, is the BIGGEST reason for the recent price rise,
DESPITE the USA decrease in demand.
Obama and Cameron squeezed Lyin’ John’s nuts a wee bit today.
You’ve already proven yourself biggest know-nothing fucktard on this site. You can stop campaigning.
$RUT Fireworks display will take place at the top of the hour.
the almighty buck, obvi!
Being up 17% is nice, but you could soon find yourself comping against a market that is up 20%-25%. It appears we are in a presidential year up-cycle that knows no limits.
Mobility, cloud and social, get in on the ground floor.
INVN is interesting. FTK was one of your best picks ever. Have you seen the price recently!
What ever happened to your GSVC? I thought that was a big one of your big ones?
SSL
Project Mafutha. ROFL.
seriously, check it out.
The enxt big trend is home farming – you know, grow your own food kinda thing
You heard it here first
look at AEM
think u had it short in the 70s
All hail the GOOG. That’s your super trend right there. Most people, and I’m talking 99.9%, don’t have a clue about how different GOOG is from any other company. Not just in their culture, but their computing power and architecture.
GOOG can put YELP and TRIP out of business by releasing a new “feature” of an existing product. In fact, I think GOOG just sunk tungle.me’s battleship by adding the appointment slots feature to Google Calendar.
All of this doesn’t happen overnight. G+ is far superior to Facebook but Facebook still retains the large user base…for now. But GOOG is the super trend.
I buy GOOG on all dips. SUPER TREND I tell you.
Indeud.
Could it be something like Solazyme?
I’m still pondering the overall question you pose.
SODA TSLA (Researched TEA and I am digging it)
