Short sellers should be foaming at the mouth again, right? That should be true if the market is actually going to crumble, but anyone who reads my work knows that is not what I expect to happen right now. Instead, I expect the market to recover, and I even expect the Market to look pretty darn good again in the next few months. A 180-degree sentiment shift has already started, there is a new Sheriff in town, and this one has a positive attitude.
Without much doubt in my mind, if you are trying to short this market you might be able to get a little from the 1228 range in the S&P /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX +0.98% , but if the market breaks above this level it has clear sailing until my next resistance level is hit. Virtually, we are testing important resistance levels now, so if you are a short seller destined to expect the market to crumble in the days ahead, you not only have an entry level, but an actionable stop loss to act on as well. If you want to short equities, something that I do not advise, you can execute the trade near 1228, but if the S&P breaks above this level do NOT stay short equities. The Market has too much room to increase if 1228 breaks higher, and it may not see these levels again for quite some time if that happens.
However, although I believe that short selling equities is unwise for anything more than an immediate trade I do believe that short-selling volatility makes a tremendous amount of sense. This recommendation has already been provided to my subscribers, so anyone reading this is getting it a little late, but I firmly believe that shorting VXX /quotes/zigman/1312200/quotes/nls/vxx VXX +0.07% will produce exceptional returns in the months ahead. If you are still thinking short, that’s fine, just short something different this time because the market is not poised to fall, rather increase, and if it does the deterioration in VXX could take that ETF back to the high teens again in a matter of months.
