Tonight, Bloomberg is FINALLY posting the story about the China Govt owned Sov Fund buying up China Banks which IMHO is what really gave the bulls a hard on yesterday. WELL, Shanghai Investors didn’t buy it. The Govt was using a “gameplan” they used in 2008 to try and support their markets by buying up the banks. Shanghai Comp closed DOWN, and Shanghai Copper Futures closed down. It just is so stupid that the global growth plays are being bought while Shanghai moves closer to hitting its 2009 low.
BTW Po Pimp, I just read your comment on the past blog. China Rebar Futures fell 11 percent in September, their biggest monthly loss ever. Spot Ore was Down since the Chinese returned from vacation, restocking is not looking good.

Would be curious if you follow the BALTIC DRY at all. Does that include Aussie ports. It’s been rising & not sure what to make of it. Usually a ‘leading’ index that can’t be faked. (or manipulated)
Baltic Ship is based in England and it is the trading house which includes BDI and tanker traffic. THe Aussie Ports are important to watch for Coal esp, New Castle, the largest of all coal ports puts out their weekly data on Monday’s. Ships have been anchored and many don’t want to travel to South America because Oil is so high and their rates aren’t reflecting that.

At its worst during the recession in 08-09 Vancouver would have 4 ships in the bay – this down from a peak of 18 in 06-07.
There were low double digits on a sustained basis over the summer – mostly log carriers (Fukushima?) – and at the beginning of last week a number approaching that tally. Six days ago, though, the number fell off – three for two days, then one. This is anecdotal and not scientific but I was shocked to see just one ship out there.
Time to look for where all the idle carriers are moored??

Zoom into any port and count the stationary carriers and the cargo ships under way. Newcastle and Gladstone in Australia look normal although Vancouver does look quiet.
Zoom into Shanghai and there are masses of ships there. You can click on the individual vessels to get tracks, photos and is some cases a history of voyages. Great for a little industrial strength information.
