Is this shit true?! — gotta to be an urban legend.

“In Boston, the city forced the fire department to stop the practice called “King for a Day” in which a retiring worker could become acting Fire Chief for a day and retire at the higher pay grade. In response to this change, 30 fire fighters filed for disability 1 day before the end of the program to boost their pay even higher”

Do they do “the boot” in California? Around here they block the road with fire equipment so traffic slows to a crawl, then they put the biggest firemen in the street with large black boots. Then as you drive by they shove the boot in your window to extract tribute for whatever they are raising dollars for. Quite a spectacle.

It’s called fill the boot. It’s done once a year. I don’t know where your “around here” is, but where I work in South Central L.A. we don’t block the street, we stay out of the lane, and one only sees a boot at close range if one stops to donate. The money goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Yeah, these posts are from 1 year ago. In NYC, FD works 3 on 4 off, meaning they can work another full time job or business and retire after 20 years.

No city employees at all can deal in cash. Go figure.

No one wants to call FD because they are quick to put an axe through your wall looking for fire. When they leave you will find doors broken down that you could easily have unlocked for them, holes in the wall, jewelry missing, and the cat pregnant.

            No fire, though.

I don’t know how they do it on the east coast but I find that hard to believe. Here in L.A. we are at work a minimum of 240 hours a month. Where I work in South Central/Watts/Compton area, having a second job is a tall order as we go all day and all night. Thievery is absolutely not tolerated, not only by the department, but by our fellow firefighters. A thief or worse would be dealt with more harshly than they get by the disciplinary and legal process. Honest folks, we love our jobs and are here to do you right. There will always be an occasional bad apple in the fire service just like there is the occasional bad apple in the money management business or any other.

Talk about mouth breathers. I saw a John Stossel interview yesterday, he was in the streets of NYC and he stopped folks and asked them “what does debt ceiling mean” and “how much is it”. He got dumb looks and answers like “I don’t know”, or “two million”? Then he showed them a picture of John Bohner and none of them knew who he was. Of course they know Snookie on Jersey Shores. These folks are all products of the liberal, elite, urbane, sophisticated northeast establishment… I bet you could go to Tennessee and get better answers…

Amish land is happen’n lately. everyone works their ass off. three horses were pulling a huge piece of
    farm machinery along side of the road, four horses were pulling an Amish farmer as he was cutting hay;
in another field, a little old Amish man was behind two horses as he was cutting hay in a huge field. I am
sure he was going to be there forever. At a brand new hotel I was working at, a van full of Amish people
pulled up, piled out, and went to work. The youngest lad, probably about 11. Just a brief report since
I was there recently. They fuck’n know how to work, and I totally respect them.

I don’t agree with their philosophy that God wanted “progress” to stop is the middle of the 18th century but I respect them deeply for their commitment. They take care of each other, share anything they have with anyone and I would hate to see them leave our area.

So political. Corperate jet owners? Lol obamas tax covers maybe 5 billion of the 3 trillion they need to make up for.
Hyperinflation or deflation. These are the choices essentially unless we create more jobs via more employers. There aren’t enough mark zuckerbergs in the world that can create a product that sells itself without needing experince or business knowledge. Most people just throw a few darts and hope it sticks. 9/10 businesses fail for a reason. These 9 potentially could have created millions of jobs if they knew what the Frick they were doing.

I think I want to vote the biggest assholes in office next election to give them the blame for the rest of history.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the United States government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance in foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means, ‘The buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today on to the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”
That was Senator Barack Obama inveighing against raising the debt ceiling in March of 2006.

Clinton left office with a budget surplus, during good times. The economy was still doing pretty well in 2006 as far as anyone knew.

Keynes economic theory advocates that the government run a surplus in good times, so that it can do deficit spending to get the economy back on track during recessions like the one we are in now. Not raising the debt ceiling in 2006 and raising it now would be entirely consistent with that theory.

No, Clinton was arm twisted by the Gingrich Congressional Reps (remember “The Contract w. America?”) who held the purse strings, to reign in spending. He signed those bills very reluctantly, and with a heavy dollop of defense spending cuts and bubble-era capital gains tax inflow, managed to barely eke out a surplus in his last year of office.

That is, if you include the moneys they stole from the “Social Security Lockbox.” surpluses.

One of the interesting things about ideology and politics is that the effectiveness of government doesn’t depend on ideology as much as it does on other things– like how corrupt the official is. That being said, the extreme Right and extreme Left political systems seem to be more corrupt, on average, than those nearer to the middle of the political spectrum. Extremism sucks.

And ideology sucks too, for that reason. Because when someone is stuck on an ideology, they are stuck on stupid. They will defend the most corrupt or extreme politicians known to mankind, no matter what crazy things they do, as long as those politicians pretend to espouse their preferred ideology, And of course most politicians espouse any ideology that they think will get them votes.

That’s all most politicians have to offer the voter is pretty words about ideology. Because once they get into office, everything is to please their campaign financiers, not the voters.

Extremists are more likely to be controllaholics. Middle of the road people are more likely to be practical– to say “What’s necessary?” instead of “How can I control everyone else to make them more like I want them to be, or to give all their money to my campaign financiers?”

      That would be me.

Maybe I should run for pres in “12”

Concentrate on getting people back to work, keeping business here instead of offshore via incentives both positive and negative.

Forget about the gay marriage thing, abortion and all those other divisive things that side track us. Concentrate on getting our fiscal house in order and leave the other drivel for a rainy day with nothing else to do. Face it. All those things that get people worked up will mean nothing if the US goes belly up. Time to get priorities correct and turn a deaf ear to “special” interests. It’s time for everyone to realize they are Americans first and gay, pro choice, pro life etc. second.

Get our guys and gals home from all the conflicts we are engaged in. Shouldn’t even require any thought as I would bet that a poll of Iraqi’s or Afghan’s would say they are much better off after having us muck about their countries for nearly a decade. War is when you go in and wipe everyone out, it doesn’t work any other way. Our Armed services are not and were never intended to be used for “disciplinary” action.
Somebody messes with us there will be hell to pay in one form or another but settling in for a decade long conflict will never happen.

Provide a way for decent hard working immigrants to be integrated into society through citizenship. If they don’t want to become US citizens and pay taxes here then the benefits they enjoy should be equivalent to their commitment. We can’t afford to support people who have no skin in the game.

Come on. Living close to border is not because of loving Americans. It’s just economic and weather choice.
Canadians are more educated and more pragmatic than Americans as a lot of them are first generation of immigrants. American are too spoiled to see the world around them.

No one wants to take the pain. They would rather see their children, grandchildren, etc… pay the bill.
Americans have for too long been lulled into a false sense of security by relying on the government and entitlements.

I’ve always lived far below my means. It makes me want to puke knowing that my hard saved dollars are being devalued to fund the largesse of government.

Changes will have to be made and promises broken. It will happen one way or another.

ocial Security in My wish list:

    1. A flat tax on individuals featuring a floor above which earnings are taxed (abolish corporate taxes).
    2. Permanent repeal of the death tax.
    3. Elimination of Medicare/Medicaid in favor of health savings accounts.

all depends on how old you are dave. they will do a “tierd”system, havent you heard out of the mouths of these fools, anyone age 55 years or older,”should” be safe, ,well fuck, after 43 years of getting ripped off top dollar for ss,they arent just gonna turn around and tell me,”oh,guess what, well keep what you gave us all these years,in turn, you wont pay in any more, but you have to pay into an account for your “golden years”. …BULLSHIT ! you see what’s been decimated in everyones 401k and ira’s……..here’s a better suggestion, give me back the 212k i put into the system,i’ll even let you slide on the interest that your irs would charge if i owed them 212k,in exchange for, i’ll never have to pay into your ponzi, ever again, and when i’m old and retired, you wont have to worry that i’ll come knockin at your door when i’m old.if we opted to take our coin back now, just think of how much this country could save in the future………. politicians are the “NEW AMERICAN SCURGE” !

If politicians are the new American scourge, then we voters have brought that scourge on ourselves by voting for them.

Politicians can’t give you back the money that you paid into Social Security. They stole it to pay for other programs. The SS Trust Fund is nothing but a bunch of IOUs.

I used to think Health Savings Accounts were a good idea, until I remembered the reason we need insurance in the first place.

Those accounts are only useful if you know your health expenditures ahead of time. Good for paying for office visits; bad for paying for much else.

The bastard children Medicare and Medicaid aren’t necessarily bad models, they’re just too big. They need a massive haircut to covered benefits, predefined covered services, or else taxes on the people who are using them, a.k.a. the middle class and poor.

One of the things the O man was suppose to be was pragmatic, you know, able to look at things objectively and make a logical decision.
He is anything but that. From what he has shown so far he is ruled by his party line and special interests of all stripes. I don’t believe he has ever had an original thought.

Our current political system as structured, does not make it possible for a person to get into office as president or Congress person, who works for the people.

Our government works on a strict ROI model. The Special Interest Groups that “invest” in government through financing campagin get a handsome return on their investment– kind of like if you’d bought Google at $100 a share. Pragmatism is focused only on serving these Special Interest Groups.

Special Interest Groups purchase legislation, or purchase the right to block legislation that might regulate them. No one gets elected without selling their soul to these groups. The voters always get thrown under the bus. Voters’ problems are never considered, much less unaddressed.

All voters get is to listen to corrupt politicians drone on and on about some popular political ideology– whatever ideology the politician thinks will get votes for him or her. Most politicians’ actual belief system, however, is simply a belief in feeding at the public trough.

I don’t know what’s in Obama’s soul, but this is the way almost all politicians function. When we as voters vote for anyone who accepts money from these groups, we are asking for this to happen to us.

Congressional demographics have not been this different in 30 years. Right verse left is a bad model. It is now right verse center right and far left, with center right opposing left, and left opposing all right.

      Makes for a trifecta…

ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have struck a tentative deal to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline. It’s not done yet, but here is the framework of the tentative deal they have worked out, according to a source familiar with the negotiations:

Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion
Spending cuts of roughly $1 trillion
Vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment
Special committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion (or whatever it takes to add up to the total of the debt ceiling increase)
Committee must make recommendations before Thanksgiving recess
If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.

A senior White House aide pushed back against the idea that a deal was struck.

“Talks continue, but there is no deal to report,” the aide said.

Isn’t that special. The deal will fall apart at the last minute. They will come up with a “working” deal, and it will be voted down by congress in the end.
