Individual investor sentiment has been pretty low – something usually seen late in a market decline rather than early.
I just downloaded the historical AAII sentiment data and looked at how recent levels of bullishness compared to the past.
There are about 2500 weeks of data. Ranking the weeks from lowest to highest bullish sentiment, the last 5 weeks have the following rankings:
6-16 245
6-09 105
6-02 276
5-26 131
5-19 163
All 5 weeks are below or close to the 10th percentile in bullishness.
There is a lot of noise in the survey, with frequent strong reactions to short-term events, but that is a fairly sustained period of low bullishness for this data series.
So many bears using plenty of margin debt ot press short bets, I don’t think so

Now is the about the time when retail / momentum traders freak out and sell their holdings right at the low.
I think the strategy here is to increase your position from here and keep doing so if the decline starts. Eventually it reverses. Then you sell and book a small gain at a very large risk, but since this is already such a large anomaly if you bet on enough of these, you’ll be dead before it goes 10 weeks against you. Double down!

My day comprised of an egg and cheese sandwich with 5 cups of coffee. A round of golf with a few of those 16-oz beers and a couple of Arturo Fuente Churchills. Followed by an onion and pepperoni bar pie, a few plates of hot wings and some thirst quenching Longboard drafts. And to end the day it will be a grilled sausage, pepper and onion sandwich, some ricotta cheesecake, and then I’ll chew on some DeNobili stogies soaked in Anisette.

The current plan is to jump back into stocks a few days before Clam announces another round of market goosing in the fall. But if the republicans don’t let Clam do it, then Jamie et al will just stay short and watch ‘er tank. Either way, they get all the money.
