Whenever the market turns lower, the dogs come creeping out from the woodworks to profess the inner workings of the market. Without making this messier than it needs to be, let’s just agree that you’re throwing open faced peanut butter sandwiches at the windows and calling it “spring cleaning.” Your style is not mine and iBankCoin is not yours. See how it all works out, mathematically?
I do not invest anymore. I use the term loosely, to show my appreciation for relics. I was able to avoid the tough markets of 2001-2003 by only positioning in fixed income. That’s right, Le Fly was almost exclusive in the bond markets back then, specializing in distressed debt. From 2003-2007, I banked consistent coin, albeit tough sledding, trading in and out of equities. However, I held some positions for years, mainly because I believed in the long term prospects of the economic model. Hell, housing was great and unemployment was so low, even my barber had 300k in stocks. However, in late 2007 to early 2008 everything changed.
I was able to avoid the collapse and make 60%+ by being short the market. In order to accomplish this, at the very minimum of requirements, I had to sell everything and then sell them again. Feel free to dabble throughout my archives to see how I traded it back then. During 2009, I covered my shorts and went long, making 90% for the year. As most of you know, in 2010, again, I was long and made about 60%+. Some people ask me “why bother trading, especially when you have such good investments ideas?” While that is true, the greater and more important truth, unvarnished, is I do not believe this system of economic structure is sustainable.
I’ve been living on pins and needles for the better part of 4 years now, waiting for some cataclysm to hit. The difference between me and the bearish blogger down the street from you is 9 figures in assets under management and the ability to take advantage of the bubble being built on easy money. This is a very important point that most of you forget to document. None of what we are doing here matters. We are simply trading today’s sentiment for tomorrow’s, when no one really knows what tomorrow will bring. Understand?
Let me put it to you this way: you see me buying the refiners right? From my balls to the wall, over-caffeinated induced blogs, discussing how “awesome and amazing” the refiners are, one might think I would never sell them. Just know, I will sell them in a second if I think the trade is dead. I sold my PSLV yesterday because I wanted to take profits. Sometimes you get lucky. I sold a bunch of stocks today because they weren’t central to my current theme. None of them matter. They are simply letters of the alphabet affixed to digits. Unlike your magical book of creation, they are not sacred.
I cannot tell you where this market is going to bring me. In all likelihood, by the end of the year I will be sipping on grotesquely large mugs, overflowing with black smoke. I will trade from a central point of rebellion, where bustling metal could be heard on a continuous basis. Or, maybe the BEARDED CLAM will reveal QE3 and allow me to further denigrate the bearshitter wrapped in burlap, to the point where their faces are nothing more than imprints in mud.
In summary: ebb and flow.

Someone says that every fucking time.

Well said.
Now lets hope WNR bounces back. Big drop today on thatta one.
I truly hope people understand WNR is positioned to not be affected by the floods…
cigx, oxgn….
Fly
I agree with everything you say. Great post.
I’m really in two minds here and thinking out loud. There are still far too many people that think this market will crash and burn. It may. However I also recall the time through the crash in 87 and all people talked about was the impending crash. I don’t think it ever happens that way.
I also don’t think QE3 is as damaging as what people think it is and the bearded clam has done a pretty good job considering he fucked up in 08/09.
The Fed’s job has been to raise nominal GDP to around 5%. It’s still not there yet, but it’s getting there. This whole thing has been a deflationary vortex and QE 3 was needed to prevent that. It won;t prove as inflationary as what people think.
Shit…….. The Fed and government spending do not truly contribute to GDP. They make it look good on paper but government induced or rather, provided, spending really contributes nothing to the “real” economy.
Non inflationary? Not as bad as we think? ARE YOU LIVING IN A VACUUM? Have you purchased no groceries in the last year? No petrol? Inflation is already here big time, The government just fudges the numbers each month to make things look pretty,
Fly is right. It’s sentiment, not fundamentals that are being bought and sold. We, the economy, the USA are FUBAR’d and must make some seriously painful choices regarding how we are going to get out of this mess.
The question is will we make the choices ourselves and have some input as to how things go down or do we simply go along for the ride until the crash occurs.
As for Fly’s trading strategy, it is correct. As Gramps used to say….. “ride the horse you have until the sucker drops dead in its tracks”.
A gambler might put it, “play the hand you’re dealt”.
Food costs more, gas costs more. Housing costs less.
Who gives a shit how we get out of this mess, or whether or not we have some input? Left, right, middle or Tea? Doesn’t matter. Our task here is how do I make some coin on whatever is happening at the moment.
agreed, the post is really terrific.
i wonder what % of the population really understand that…
i’ll tell ya, 5% at least.
the methodology behind the glourious[sic] winship is revealed. excellent post, sir.
Well, yeah…Fly you have been trading forever and have seen many bubbles before. This is my first one that I have gotten to watch from the start…each day I am amazed that no one in the world has come out and said, ahh guys we have this ugly bubble that needs to be fixed…I have to see how and why it pops…been waiting forever.
So when did the bubble start? Just saying it started the first day prices went up is not the correct answer. You have been watching this from day 1 but I don’t think you understand what you are looking at.
I hope today’s action in commodities won’t affect “the awesome and amazing” Mrs. Fly’s home rennovation project. I wish I could gut my house like that.
Fly,
Best post ever.
Keep baring your soul.

Extraordinarily profound post. My favorite part:
“I sold a bunch of stocks today because they weren’t central to my current theme. None of them matter. They are simply letters of the alphabet affixed to digits”
my dear insect, i used to read you way before the ppt site. and i’ve found you again. i could not agree more with the post. however, i may have missed the post or posts, where you explain your criteria for selecting stocks. could you direct us to them. in order to help the readers. thanks
Great post, but also a little sober and scary.
“I’ve been living on pins and needles for the better part of 4 years now, waiting for some cataclysm to hit”
In the world I live in, the cataclysm has hit so many, and so hard, that I have a serious case of survivor’s guilt. It must show, because I am being hit up from all sides by people who are begging me to lend them money. Yesterday, the guy who has been servicing my cars for the last five years, showed up at my house and asked for $30,000 so that he could keep his doors open. The tax man has threatened to close them.
In the afternoon, somebody I don’t know, have never even met or even talked to, called me and asked to borrow over $600,000, so that he could have his silent partner take the money and factor the $1.4 million dollar note on his highway property. When I asked him how he got my home phone number , he told me one lie after another. Two days before that, my general building contractors, one whom has already declared Chapter 11, asked me to put $150,000 in their construction account for one month, in order to satisfy the State that they have the capital they are supposed to have for their unlimited contractor’s license renewal.
I am not a money lender, but neither, apparently, are the banks. Today, the biggest realtor in town and his wife, a county court judge, declared Chapter 7. Things here are positively cataclysmic.
You made your point but in the process made yourself sound like a pompous azz.
I don’t believe a word of your story either.
My post is true, and, I may sound to you like a pompous ass to you, because I am a pompous ass. I don’t lie, because I don’t need to lie. However, there were some slight inaccuracies in one of my statements. I said:
“Today, the biggest realtor in town and his wife, a county court judge, declared Chapter 7.”
I should have said:
Today, I found out that he biggest realtor in town and his wife, a county court judge, declared Chapter 7.

Star News? You in Wilmington? This is a hard city to make it in. I don’t know if it can be compared to most larger cities. Plus, it’s filled with a large number of imbecilic drunkards. Not surprised people are shitting the bed left and right.
You know what you are talking about. Alcohol and prescription drugs are the lifeblood of this city.
Baron, if you ain’t in Nassau County, NY or Palm Beach, FL, you ain’t shit. And don’t ever forget a blue-blood, pedigreed yeoman pointed his finger in your face and held it with a gritted face.
LOL @ Nassau County…

I’m just glad they’ll grab a rental NY plate when I visit this summer… .
kudos for getting out of RE in time. Not pompous if it’s true.
Does anyone know of a book about the UK after the pound lost reserve currency status?
I’m wondering what the timeline was for investors – how long did it take investors to get it – that they weren’t #1 anymore.

indeud,
you pays your moneys and you takes your chances
many rich and poor will trade places in the near future.
Make that the rich and not-so-rich. Some say that “poor” is a way of life or way of thinking, whereas less-rich or broke is simply a temporary situation.
I intend to cat-the-fuck-apult into the rich encampment during the melee ahead – or perhaps just slip in unnoticed under cover of dark
Classic post
A true trader ebb and flow = take what the market the market gives you
9 figures = the retirement accounts of a half dozen people in greenwich, ct, and only 2 if you are any good at your job. how glorious of a job; will you also clean my carpets if I give you 50 basis points?

As President of CADSAU, on behalf of our membership, we demand an apology. Contrary to the baseless allegations contained this blog, our livelihood is by no means inferior to hedge fund trading. Indeed, we provide a useful service whereas trading is more like jacking off. Come to think of it, we are all in a similar line of work.
On behalf of the members of CADSAU, we cordially invite all you jack offs to join us. Welcome aboard!
I hope gasoline goes to $10 just to fuck everyone over. Fucking world of total fucking idiots.

Go ahead and kill yourself. again.
I can’t, I’m a ghost.
crack spreads back above 30 as I speak!
Beautiful post… stated like a true and accomplished speculator
Precisely. Keynesian capitalism denies the possibility of a real limit on price and economic growth. Only an idiot could believe that hypothetical progress in efficiency will trump the finite resources and accelerating consumption of this planet, much less that price is independent of materials. Human beings simply cannot live an actual sustainable lifestyle with regards to the environment. Think 300 million Americans burn through physical goods? Wait till 3 billion Asians start living the good life.
Ergo, milk this fucker for all you can before the end.
And buy physical silver.
If the shit hits the fan the gubbment will have to figure out a way to repair it, and quickly. After all, the election season is upon us and heaven forbid we should see a double digit unemployment report, which is why QE was established in the first place.. But of course, high speed rail systems are the answer….
At least I will see my tax dollars at work if they build high speed rails… It beats having nothing to show for it.
If the shit hits that fan, said shit will be flung everywhere..
It would break the fan.
Certain interesting confluences here, hmmmmm?

That is the money quote and what separates you. Sold everything at the top in ’07 and have been skittish ever since.
Cheers to you for having gigantic balls in 2009.
I will give you advice even though you will ignore it: Leverage down and take fucking profits!!!! You already won and you have nothing left to prove.
The best financial article I ever read was from Bill Fleckenstein(post crash) who went massively short right before the crash. In early 2009 one of his closest friends told him to liquidate his short fund and enjoy the fact that he won.
Bill was still bearish but took his advice.
Fos for thought. Thanks for your honesty Fly. It’s very fresh and genuine.
With the huge drop in Copper in the Shanghai Futures tonight, I bet there are some China Biz Men that are getting nervous about all those loans using copper as collateral….
Copper bullion ingots, now even the Walmart stock boy can speculate in the metals and take delivery.

Anyone who tells you that silver is tanking, because of JPM’s shorts, is today’s version of the stock tipping shoeshine boy:
http://kiddynamitesworld.com/
Even those, like Turd Ferguson, who told you to buy if silver dipped to $35, are building small boats this morning, hoping they can survive going over the “waterfall”.
As the Baron de Rothschild said: “Buy when there is blood in the streets, even if that blood is your own”. Well, there is plenty of blood in the streets this morning–or is it water? If silver hits $30, that’s a 40% crash in less than a week. Man the lifeboats, it really is a waterfall.
you’re throwing open faced peanut butter sandwiches at the windows and calling it “spring cleaning – Classic!

Sounds like you’re back on track mentally…its at these moments when you experience your greatest moments of winship – not when your pipes break.
