The market is trying hard to rebound, but can’t quite get its footing.
I mean, we have decent action in a number of sectors. In basic materials, CLF, CENX, SCCO are looking good, as well as a number of other metal stocks. In the banks, NTRS and C are showing strength, while COF and BLK lag. Ag is on fucking fire, due to the sudden “scorched Earth” policy of Mother Nature on Russia. Stocks like CAGC, MOS, IP, AGU and POT are off to the races.
Gold and silver stocks are green across the board, as GLD presses higher.
Retail names are okay, with leadership in GES and PLCE. However, SHLD, KSS and SKS are very weak.
The big outlier and albatross for today’s tape is tech, thanks to CSCO. Their tentacles spread wide and are inflicting damage to the share prices of NETL, CAVM, JNPR, CIEN, BRCM and JBL. If not for the “CSCO problem,” this market would be off to the races right now.
If forced to guess, I’d say we get a decent bounce tomorrow. Prepare accordingly.

Just an observation, as a follower of this site for well beyond a year, it is interesting to observe the postings during periods of significant flux in the markets. I believe the assembled bloggers, the peanut gallery contributors, and K of PG feature writers assembled here provide some of the best open dialouge (sp) concerning the markets. While opions of market moves do vary individually, it is the collective which provides so much to site visitors and readers.
During these periods of flux in the markets, it is interesting to observe the drive by poison dart blowers that appear in the various blog windows.
As an outsider…I and Kaiser the Dog as well as Loki appreciate all of your efforts and determination to give understanding of the markets to all the ignorant including myself…this also extends to the regular participants on this site.

EL had a decent quarter on record sales, thanks to emerging markets. Apparently you can put lipstick on a pig because Russia, Turkey, and Israel had double digit sales growth but going forward I can’t imagine very many people wearing makeup with masks over their faces. Asia was strong with double digit growth in skin and hair care. The consumer over there is moving up the quality chain. One item to note is that they usually post their highest gains in Q2.
ANF reported net sales up 17% in a 4-week period ending August 1. With retail sales readings tomorrow, perhaps this is one to pick up ahead of or after the numbers release depending on market conditions.
