Instead of being all cash, I own a shitload of treasuries, via [[TLT]] . While I wait for “my market,” I get a .38 divvy per month and protection against a declining market, since treasuries is the true flight to quality, NOT gold. I’ve been buying [[VXX]] due to my belief that the era of zero volatility is long in the tooth, to say the least. Also, if the market dips, it will rapidly appreciate, serving as a hedge against my long positions. Don’t worry, before you know it I will be tossing old fuckers into lit fireplaces again. However, for now, I need to make these moves.

Totally agree, Jake. When I relocated from the Midwest 7 years ago, Greenville, SC was one of 3 places I considered, as I have a childhood friend who lives in Anderson, SC, just 40 minutes south. Greenville has a very nice, clean downtown area. I’ve been there several times on golf trips – there are some great courses in and around that area.
Major sporting events are roughly 90 minutes away in Charlotte, or 2.5 hours the other direction in Atlanta.
Buttons, you have to adapt when you move to a new area. It is indeed the Bible Belt. But it doesn’t mean that one has to necessarily join them, unless that’s your gig as well.

Fly… I have a question regarding what I read from money and markets… My non calculator brain is confused!

granted, I hear logical arguments like this one end up as wrong because they are missing something, but it seems to me that at some point (maybe not not now) that bonds will be a risk and that people won’t want to lock their money up with historically lower yields for long periods of time while the rest of the world prints money like crazy. True they are doing so to combat the deflationary risk, but money never disappears it just changes hands, and there’s either enough money in the system to cover the previous credit or there’s not. Seems like Ben’s doing everything he can to make sure there’s more than enough, and I don’t blame him, but won’t that lead to inflation and thus make gold a good play for safety?

You should email me a fund prospectus, right now I manage my own cash because all of the hedgies I talked to in December 2008/jan/feb 09 were short things like casinos and reits and financials and long thrill rides like XOM, WMT, McD and so forth. I can’t imagine that worked out well for them from March through May when they finally covered and went long.
A couple of them told me I would lose all my money, every penny, if I tried to invest it myself. A couple told me to go long Monsanto last year in Feb because it was the only stock in the S&P that would meet earnings and hold in there, everything else was going to crash. Boy did that work out for them.
Result of negative hedgie-interactions has been some drunken, utterly tactless and graceless, emails and phone calls stating my last-12-month coin bankage and asking what theirs was. They don’t usually reply.
