LCD TV inventory is widely believed to have reached 1.5 – 2.0 months ahead of Golden Week (vs. normal 4-6 weeks) & consensus view is for 2-3mln unit sell-through for holiday. We believe anecdotal reports/channel checks will drip out throughout the week, w/final reported numbers next week. Though we believe more data is need for full assessment, early indications are encouraging so far.
Stock Call — While acknowledging near-term headwinds from weaker panel prices, we remain buyers of GLW based on: 1) Potential for stabilization in panel market if LCD TV sales in China are inline to better than expected. 2) Glass supply may be not be as tight as the time immediately following the Shizuoka earthquake, but glass is certainly NOT loose and we see very low probability of a replay of 2H08. 3) Heading into seasonally strong holidays in N. America & Europe, plus Super Bowl in N. I really still don’t get the weak dollar higher equity prices thing. I’m prepared to go with it because that’s what the market likes, however there’s something really, really unhealthy about that fucking nexus. Stronger currency begets strong equity prices.. period. Not the other way round. This is going to end up in ugliyville one day.

yea artist and the flow seems to be foreigners leaving the US with domestic firms buying the dollar, or China who has no fucking choice but to buy it because of their fixed exchange rate. the problem is that net net foreigners, or enough foreigners have to buy the dollar because of the current account deficit or it keeps falling. That’s your flow. If it keeps falling others lose confidence and leave. All I’m saying is that this is not healthy and it will come to grief.
The problem with running a current account deficit is that you have to entice foreigners to hold dollars either as a deposit, a bond, equity or real estate. The big difference between foreigners and a US domestic is that foreigners unlike domestic players are forced to take an exchange rate risk. If the currency continues to fall that makes foreigners less likely to buy dollars and the thing just spirals downward.
