Aight, I think I’ve got the front end of this virus thing figured out. Thunderpup, just a few minutes ago, figured out what the Javashit does – namely attempts to launch a Flash exploit.
There’s an invisible IFRAME (width=1, height=1) for http://BusinessNameShop.cn/in/ on the homepage.
This URL immediately redirects to http://mmcounter.com/in.cgi?id115
…which looks like some kind of pagecounter, but isn’t.
That, in turn, redirects to http://mmcounter.com/tds/in.cgi?default
…possibly because I turn Javashit off when poking at this kind of stuff.
And that site, in turn, redirects to http://big.ff-freehosting.com/vip/index.php
…which returns a decently-sized pile (~8000 bytes) of obfuscated Javashit. The obfuscation is randomly-generated, server-side, presumably as part of an effort to hide things from traffic filters. For example, one visit produced code that started out like this:
…function MVZxHJ(DSqkUMt)…
And a second visit a few seconds later produced this:
…function NxsJnGg(A5bNWpNSBK7EV7)…
And while I’m too lazy to decompile it, that’s a huge red flag. ~8 kilobytes is long enough to do damn near anything on an insecure box.
A little googling of “ff-freehosting” reveals that it is a known malware site, as is mmcounter.com. At least one other thread describes businessnameshop.cn as the jumping-off point for a malware infection — presumably the operators have a bunch of .cn domain names, all of which feed into the mmcounter/ff-freehosting sites that are at the center of the malware distribution operation.
There’s insufficient data from this side of the keyboard to make *any* conclusions as to where the fault lies. Could be the hosting company for all we know.
Now, with the S&P solidly below 900, back to watching those long positions evaporate.
It should go without saying, but for fuck’s sake, don’t visit any of those URLs without adequate protection, such as disabling Javashit and all plug-ins at a minimum.
