I think the global figure for worker/retiree health care costs re: Toyota vs. GM is on the order of $US1400 per vehicle (ie, GM’s base cost of a comparable vehicle is that much higher on a global average as a direct result of higher health care costs, but definitely don’t quote me… Maybe the new Russian plant will bring the average down and make GM more competitive, but maybe also vodka-stinkin’ chimps named Ivan will soon fly out of my butt).
Management in the US auto industry in the 70s and 80s must have known there would be untenable legacy costs before too long, but by then they themselves would be long gone. With the parachute and vested options. Those perks have a masive cost over 40 years and for most of that time those guys ran their companies like a government agency. Minivans, pickups and SUVs kept them gong a decade longer than their natural life…which is over.
