The problem with the auto industry is the same as the problem with people in America. Everyone has this sense of entitlement – ‘I deserve it’ attitude rather than ‘I am privileged to have it’.
So workers at GM, Ford et al. all get paid outrageous amounts to do work that a monkey could do. And they think they deserve it. Same thing with the airline industry.

GM makes decent cars but their interiors suck and they have too many inefficient V-8’s in their product lines … the Japanese and Germans kill the U S when it comes to creature comforts, safety and performance. Don’t forget, the Japs are mfg’g here now and have gotten big incentives from some States via tax incentives and infrastructure to build in those states not to mention the savings in non-union shops. But they still provide health care benefits and if not pensions then some form of 401k with matching incentives …
Get the U S car makers playing on the same field and they can compete though a slimmed down mgmt on competetive salaries w/o the bonus incentives of the past or stock options based on ability to fool their auditors would go a long way.
The Pontiac Solstice, Chevy Corvette and Caddy V are examples of well engineered cars that can compete with the best foreign cars in their respective classes.
They’ve become too dependent on trucks and SUV’s and it’s killing them … especially on avg mpg/vehicle and pricing compared to their comp that sells “cars” ….
