Apple Blocks Java From Macs

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Some Mac users were taken by surprise Thursday as their computers stopped running programs written using the Java programming language after Apple blocked Java due to security problems.

Java allows programmers to write a wide variety of Internet applications and other software programs and run them on most computers, including Apple Inc.’s Mac.

However, earlier this month the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommended disabling Java in Web browsers to avoid potential hacking attacks. Oracle Corp., which owns Java, has issued updates that fix known vulnerabilities, but the DHS expects that there are more flaws in Java’s coding.

Apple sends out virtual “blacklists” to Internet-connected Macs, instructing them not to run certain programs. Apple is blocking the latest version of Java from running on the most recent versions of its Mac operating system, and blocking an older version, Java 6, from running on the older version of its Mac system, called Snow Leopard. The blocks affect programs and online games that use Java in Web browsers.

Oracle had no immediate comment on Apple’s action.

Documentary: Harvest of Empire

In light of the recent immigration proposal this week, i thought it would be interesting to delve into the history of immigration and how so many illegal immigrants ended up in the U.S.

I for one had a high quality private education right through college and never once was taught what this documentary reveals.

So cast away everything the boob tube has pounded into your head and understand some of the root causes as to why we are in the situation were are in.

Cheers on your weekend!

BURGER KING ADMITS TO SELLING HORSE MEAT BURGERS

Burger King has tonight admitted that it has been selling burgers and Whoppers containing horsemeat despite two weeks of denials.

The fast food chain, which has more than 500 UK outlets, had earlier given a series of ‘absolute assurances’ that its products were not involved.

However, new tests have revealed these guarantees were incorrect in a revelation that threatens to destroy the trust of customers.

Debtor’s Prisons On the Rise

“How did breast cancer survivor Lisa Lindsay end up behind bars?

She didn’t pay a medical bill — one the Herrin, Ill., teaching assistant was told she didn’t owe. “She got a $280 medical bill in error and was told she didn’t have to pay it,” The Associated Press reports.

“But the bill was turned over to a collection agency, and eventually state troopers showed up at herhome and took her to jail in handcuffs.”

In September 2009, Jeffrey Stearns, a concrete-company owner, answered a knock at the door from a Hancock County, Ind., deputy sheriff. The deputy was holding a warrant to arrest Mr. Stearns for not paying $4,024.88 owed to a unit of American International Group Inc. on a loan for his pickup truck.

After being handcuffed in front of his four children, Mr. Stearns, 29 years old, spent two nights in jail, where he said he was strip-searched and sprayed for lice. Court records show he was released after agreeing to pay $1,500 to the loan company. “I didn’t even know I was being sued,” he said, though he doesn’t dispute owing the money.

In a similar case, according to the WSJ, one Illinois resident was arrested for missing a court hearing regarding the $1,159.87 she owned on her Capitol One (COF) credit card. She paid $500 to get out of the local lock-up, which the company took as partial repayment of the debt.

Although the U.S. abolished debtors’ prisons in the 1830s, more than a third of U.S. states allow the police to haul people in who don’t pay all manner of debts, from bills for health care services to credit cardand auto loans. In parts of Illinois, debt collectors commonly use publicly funded courts, sheriff’s deputies, and country jails to pressure people who owe even small amounts to pay up, according to the AP.

If debt collectors won’t get you, the courts might. Many states hit people convicted of a crime, even for minor offenses such as speeding, with a range of fees. Skip out on those and you can go to jail, too. Some states also apply “poverty penalties,” including late fees, payment plan fees and interest when people are unable to pay all their debts at once, according to New York University‘s Brennan Center for Justice. Alabama charges a 30 percent collection fee, for instance, while Florida allows private debt collectors to add a 40 percent surcharge on the original debt.

Many Florida counties also use so-called collection courts, where debtors can be jailed but have no right to a public defender. In Pennsylvania, prisoners are ineligible for parole unless they pay a $60 fee, or roughly $40 less than it costs to incarcerate someone in the state for a single day.

Such “criminal justice” fees amount to criminalizing poverty, says an attorney with the ACLU National Prison Project:

Incarcerating people simply because they cannot afford to pay their legal debts is not only unconstitutional but also has a devastating impact upon men and women, whose only crime is that they are poor.

Under the law, debtors aren’t arrested for nonpayment, but rather for failing to respond to court hearings, pay legal fines, or otherwise showing “contempt of court” in connection with a creditor lawsuit. That loophole has lawmakers in the Illinois House of Representatives concerned enough to pass a bill in March that would make it illegal to send residents of the state to jail if they can’t pay a debt. The measure awaits action in the senate…..”

REJOICE: GAY DOG RESCUED FROM ‘KILL SHELTER’

The male American bulldog mix pictured above faced euthanization at Jackson Rabies Control Animal Shelter in Tennessee on Thursday, after his owner saw him mounting another male dog, assumed he was gay, and turned him in.

A Facebook user, under the name “Jackson Madison Rabies Control Stalker,” often visits the kill shelter looking for dogs to advertise for adoption. The 39-year-old mother and animal lover featured this unwanted dog on her page, in a post that received more than 4,200 shares and 1,405 comments overnight.

This guy was signed over to RC, not bc he’s mean or bc he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay! He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away bc he refuses to have a “gay” dog! Even if that weren’t the most assinine [sic] thing I’ve ever heard, its still discrimination! Don’t let this gorgeous dog die bc his owner is ignorant of normal dog behavior! He’s in kennel 10L and he WILL be put down tomorrow bc there is no room at the inn!
What the owner of the dog obviously didn’t know, as The Atlantic Wire points out, is that dogs “often mount each other to show dominance.”

Fetus Would Be Rape Evidence as Republicans Push Abortion Bills

“When pregnancy results from rape or incest, destroying the evidence — the fetus — would become a felony in New Mexico. Women might need to wait six days before undergoing an abortion in South Dakota. And Mississippi would redefine the word “person” to apply to a fertilized egg.

Those proposals are among dozens of abortion-related bills that state lawmakers are set to consider in 2013. The November elections left Republicans in control of both legislative chambers in 26 states and with new majorities in Wisconsin, Arkansas and Alaska. That’s emboldened abortion opponents to continue the momentum of the past two years, when a record 135 restrictions on the procedure were passed….”

$NOK Re-brands Itself by Signing Up $TM Europe for in Car Maps

“Nokia’s rebranded HERE mapping service has snagged another car-maker — signing Toyota Motor Europe to use Nokia Local Search for Automotive for its Touch & Go in-car navigation and infotainment systems. As well as digital maps, Nokia’s service will bring community-generated content to the in-car systems — including “millions” of ratings, reviews and images.

Toyota said the Nokia powered mapping technology is expected to be in Toyota systems that are on sale from early 2014 in Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

In September last year, prior to the HERE rebranding of its digital mapping service, Nokia signed location deals with BMW, Mercedes A-Class, Garmin, Hyundai, Pioneer and Volkswagen Group.

On a “global average basis”, Nokia said it now powers four out of five cars with “fully-integrated in-dash navigation systems”. ”Location & Commerce continue to build partnerships with a number of major industry players, particularly in the area of automotive-grade maps content and solutions. We are providing content to partners including Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Dacia, ESRI, Ford, Garmin, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Nikon, Pioneer, Scania, Toyota and Volkswagen,” a company spokeswoman added.

Earlier this month, Google announced its own mapping win in the in-car space, signing Hyundai Motor Company — which owns the Hyundai and Kia car brands — to use Google Maps and Places in its telematics systems, specifically for Hyundai’s Blue Link and Kia’s second-generation UVO eServices….”

$RIO Will Temporarily Suspend a Mining Project in Mongolia to Discuss Countries Want of Share

Rio Tinto Group (RIO), the second-biggest mining company, is considering a temporary halt to construction work at its $6.2 billion Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project in Mongolia as the government demands a greater share of profit from the mine, according to two people familiar with the plans.

The London-based company is discussing the suspension to protest the central Asian nation’s demands for a bigger stake in the project and new mining royalty rates, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they aren’t authorized to comment publicly. A suspension of work, which may halt mining and processing, isn’t certain and is among options that managers are discussing in London, one of the people said….”

67% Of Americans Polled Do Not Believe a Gun Ban Would Have Prevented Sandy Hook

“According to a new Reason-Rupe poll released today, just 27% of Americans believe that an assault weapons ban would have helped prevent the tragedy at Sandy Hook in Newtown, CT. 67% of Americans believe that the ban, which expired in 2004, would not have prevented the tragic shooting. Overall, the poll finds Americans far more skeptical of gun control laws than the Democrats and media assume.

Asked what the government’s response to the Newtown shooting should be, just 16% said “stricter gun control.” 21% said the federal government shouldn’t do anything in response, while 20% said the federal government should act to increase security in schools. Despite the wall-to-wall media coverage and the President’s bully pulpit, the American public understands that preventing tragic shootings like Newtown is far more complicated than simply passing new gun laws. ..”
