This is a fraud. The original researcher lost his medical license. People believe the first thing they read.

lol…I can’t believe people still fall for this stuff. For goodness sakes the site is called Natural News… I wonder if they are pushing alternatives to vaccines?

It’s outright dangerous. People are avoiding getting their kids vaccinated because they hear this crap. It’s a real danger to their own kids and others. Those diseases the vaccinations prevent are mother-fuckers.

no need to freak out….vaccines are more than likely good, but perhaps the medical profession could figure out how to get rid of the mercury.

I don’t think any amount of mercury is good….especially a young developing person

Someone explain why there are so many cases of Autism in recent years? No it’s not all just an attack on the drug companies. It’s a serious issue. Rather than fluffing it off as bullshit, we should be doing research like this to find the source of the problem. Maybe it is the vaccines, maybe its not, but without research we will never know.

A small amount of mercury is in the preservative for the vaccine. It does not cause autism, as has been falsely reported. This is not a freak out.

Semantics is what has caused the big spike in autism. Before, you were just retarded. Then, you were mentally disabled or intellectually disabled or you had learning disability or were mentally disturbed. Now, you are “somewhere along the autism spectrum” including Asperger’s syndrome. When was the last time you had someone tell you their kid was retarded or mentally disabled? Exactly. Now, when was the last time they said their child was autistic? I’m not trying to be crass or insensitive, at all. The point is that autism is now a catch all for any disability that is not clearly caused by a chromosome abnormality, like Downs.

Bullish, I’m not joking, or trying to be rude or insensitive. Tell me why it is not true.

While I agree there is probably a much higher rate of autism diagnosis due to the wide spectrum of autism. I don’t believe you can honestly tell me there were the same amount of people with autism 20 years ago as there is today. Clearly something has changed in the environment that is causing this significant increase and it’s not just a reclassification of mental disorders.

There is a definite difference between being autistic and being mentally handicapped. They are two different things, neither of which do I think any “normal” people should look down on. It’s something that just happens. The question should be why does it happen?

Despite what Fly thinks, we were able to put humans on the moon 50 years ago. Why we can’t figure out what causes Autism is the most frustrating.

Maybe I’m a bit sensitive to the subject, given the fact I’m a father to an autistic child, but putting aside my bias I can assure you there is something going on that is causing this social problem and it’s not just relabeling.

Bullish, I’m always secretive about what I do during the day, but a large part of it is working with autistic children. I’ll leave it at that.

I often speak with their parents, and even after coming to know them well, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for parents. I say this because I do not want you for one second to believe that I have anything but the utmost sympathy and respect for parents who are raising autistic children, and for the children themselves.

I still think it is more about relabeling, but I also believe that you have probably researched this more than I have, so I will have to rethink my belief, and do some google sleuthing.

Best to you Bullish. I love to have a good debate about a controversial subject, but I do not want to seem at all insensitive about this, or let my enthusiasm for debate cause anyone any pain.

Nah, I didn’t think you were being insensitive at all… I love to debate all sorts of stuff (clearly by my frequency to iBC). My only point was there’s probably something going on and I’m just shocked we can’t seem to figure it out.

The more debate on the subject will hopefully lead to more awareness and ultimately a cure.

I too have complete sympathy for parents of autistic children. I just wanted to point out that follow up studies have shown there is no correlation between autism and immunizations. The original researcher cooked his data and had his MD removed. I think it’s important for everyone to have their children vaccinated for public health and the health of your own children.

Looks like I was half-right (half-wrong?) with my relabeling comments, according to this research.

“Based on the abovementioned research, approximately 53% percent of the increase in autism prevalence over time may be explained by changes in diagnosis (26%), greater awareness (16%), and an increase in parental age (11%). While this research is beginning to help us understand the increase in autism prevalence, half of the increase is still unexplained and not due to better diagnosis, greater awareness, and social factors alone.”
