This is an exercise of futility, so bear with me (pun intended!).
Let’s imagine for a moment the stock market starts to slope down on the “other side of the mountain.” Pursuing that train of thought, I have taken the liberties to educate you about the lessons of 2008 and other past market melt-downs.
Hedge funds and institutions, for the most part, ride the same group of stocks, up and down. There is a certain criteria that must be met, prior to buying a security, stemming from basic price points, market caps to PE multiples. Every institution has its own set of standards. What’s important to acknowledge, through easy to find reportable data, is what they are buying. Once you know what they are buying, ironically, you will also know what they will be selling in the future. Remember when FCX and NOV were nosediving into the ground, during the credit crisis? That had nothing to do with fundies, but hedge fund liquidations.
Now, if you are going to short any of the names mentioned in this post, do so with caution, for they are heavily sponsored by Wall Street’s greatest money gatherers. The criteria was simple: find stocks, via The PPT, that have been accumulated by institutions, over the past month, add in some performance data, minimum market cap and forward multiple information and voila: I found myself a nice list of idiot stocks to gun after.
Naturally, once the Fed starts pumping more miracle money into the market, I might need to purge this list from my mind. But, for now, I reminisce about the times when stocks adhered to the basic principals of fundamental analysis.
Here is “The Funnel” aka “hot money magnets”
(note: for PPT users, here is the actual screen)
AAPL, GFI, GG, QCOM, SAP, EC, ECA, V, MON, PAAS, SCCO, GOOG, BID, SKS, AVB, GOLD, ROK, BXP, FRT, KO, APC and NKE.
Get in the funnel.

Surprised NFLX isn’t on there.
didn’t meet criteria
Institutions were net sellers over the past month.
Kool… thx Senor T.
Holy Toledo, El Mosca! That’s a nice list, but couldn’t find it going through the link to the PPT.
Nevermind. Got it!
Thanks.
Unfortunately, if this is just a “dip” aka “buying opportunity” aka “a pause that refreshes”, dismemberment shall result from shorting the above.
Kudos on the generosity, but wow that’s a tricky set of stocks to sell.
The market is Prince Naseem-like now
That was quite the pump job into the close. I think Paulson called up his old friends at GS and said get me a 100,000 spy’s on the short side for tomorrows drubbing.
THANK YOU FLY….I am going to do more research on this!!!!! This is so COOL!!!!
Kudos to you Fly. While everyone runs around on twitter and the blahgospshere always saying the same thing playing yesterdays tune, you and Scotty B are one of the few that are always playing for the next trade.
The cycles in the market seem compressed as of late and play out much quicker than before. It’s funny to see the majority of people constantly getting bullish after these month long 10% run-ups. When will they realize that they need to be in (out) of these moves prior?
I can pick out true leaders from a crowd a mile a way and you sir have proven yourself time and again.
A splashed you with cognac a long time ago on a prior victory lap I am wondering if I need to order another bottle?
Intermediate waves (cycle) are comprised of minor wave movements accounting for the quick corrections and low volatility. As we progress the wave patterns will get bigger along with the volatility.
Per OEW tonight:
“For now, Int. wave four [down] is the focus, and we have good support at the SPX 1150 level (OEW 1146 pivot) and the 1136 pivot. Would expect the daily RSI to get oversold before Int. wave four concludes, and it should be a simpler pattern than Int. wave two [down].”
Superfine comments and trade analysis……The Chinese just gave the Bearded One the finger today and pronounced themselves kings of the world….thankfully they have Lotto for expatriates.
hmm… never thought the good old $KO would be on this list.
i mean $KO has been a steady performer and seems do well during market turbulence, no??? i thought that is one of a few left for ‘buy and hold’ that i don’t have to worry too much.
Great stuff, thank you for this!
Fuck yeah FlyDiddy…cept i wouldn’t be shortin no apple…that shit is mad dangerous!
Not too long ago ko was a perenniel under performer. I am not suggesting it is a great short. But it has been accumulated over the past month.
Bah maybe not KO but i found several other great shorts on that list…i am going to sell some small spec positions in them this week.
In other news, did you read this shit?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/20/business/global/20ghost.html?hpw
WTF? if this doesn’t end badly i promise to become a communist!
thanks le fly. I just became a ‘distinguished gentle(wo)man! looking inside ppt KO still score as a strong buy. so many of stocks in my portfolio score as ‘sell’ or ‘strong sell.’ a lot to learn how to use the system to find what i need…
true that when i bought KO a few month ago it was $52 and now passing $60. maybe its time for me to take profit – in my case a very rare thing to come by so far…
My personalized plates just came in today. Now I can ignore both traffic and physical laws without consequence:

Sent from by Blackberry, while drinking and driving
If I see you on the roadways, I will gift you with a bottle of Grey Poupon!
A word of warning, however: mounting such plates on a FAZ-mobile will result in a singularity event.
I’m just waiting to short goofy rare earth stocks.
“China denies rare earth export quota report”
lol
Might have missed my chance to short
Don’t forget POMOs tomorrow & Friday.
APC’s on there? Really? I’m surprised.
Hubbs
Ppt is best used for mean reversion.
Short Gold & Silver?
I wouldn’t recommend it.

…..nor would I recommend betting against the Texas Rangers. Yeah-boy!
Look at those empty seats behind home plate in the 8th inning. Even Yankee fans have given up.
If you change some of the same components on the screen you get interesting results. Change net bought/sold to Under 1M and price increase Over 20% for the month. Throw in daily price change, you’ll see mostly stocks that dropped 2.5-5% today.
I’m thinking this may just be the pause before the holiday party… Forclosuregate is a worry though – I don’t think the worst happens but the fear during the undecided period could get messy
Jake
You should know more than anyone, when gold/silver corrects, it gets ugly.
I’m liking that AEM short play.
It “can” get ugly. But I wouldn’t trust the dollar here, so be careful.
__________
i am careful about it…
ECA announces tomorrow at 1PM ET. If they surpise to the upside, it could melt up 10%. Then again, it’s nat gas and they have been burning cash.
The seats behind homeplate are always empty, due to high prices. Not even rich ny’ers want them.
Even more empty now….Hamilton/Cruz express…lovin’ it.
Eff U, Sawx lovah.

What’s going to work next, since Tex’s hammy certainly is not?
Why, the King of the Trannies, of course!

This busboy thinks that the market needs another 200 pts downside to get more bears aboard the boat.
A lot of bears cover near the end today. This market will have a hard time to go higher unless the bears are fully loaded and trapped for a short squeeze.
Not gonna happen … as soon as the $ turns tail, back up we go. Expect 1146 support to be quite formidable as well … watch for RSI to get oversold, it’s the canary in the coal mine to get long.
Lol. Back atcha, Kain-tuck-ee.
Seriously, Jakey….you still bettin’ your emotional well-being on A-Fraud and the Yankees? It is Texas’ time now. Yanks have finally met their match.
Take a chill pill. The handwriting is on the wall for Belshazzar and the evil empire.
Pawk ma caah, ‘n shine ma shoes, Brawnx lovah.
Coming from a lifelong Yanks fan, they are done, as the Girardi pitching experiment has blown up in his face. Not only that, I believe after making the playoffs the last 15 of 16 seasons, the Yanks will barely make it 30% of the time over the next 15 seasons.
New era Yankee fans underestimate how important Rivera is as a closer – try living through Dave Righetti for a few years – and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him retire now. In either case, with Jeter, Posada, Pettitte & Rivera up in age, the Steinbrenner Era has ended.
P.S. Boston is in no better shape.
I’d say Texas has a great future—lots of younger players, and if they pick up more quality starting pitchers that want to play for legend Nolan Ryan, they will be even better.
Cliff Lee is a stud.
Their 22 year old closer, Naptali Feliz, will be the league’s next Rivera.
No question the Ranger have good bats, and can play long ball and small ball.
Tough combos to beat.
Can’t argue with that…
When i look at that video fly posted. You may look upon your life and see that you are mel gibson, and you have had to overcome some kind of difficulity. This video resinates down in the soul, that the pain of life that you have made it through to live to fight another day. For me, it’s more of a spritual thing, the longer i think about it. That I made it through this setback, to serve my god another day.
