Stocks, how many day traders do you know that trade 10K blocks of SPY?
How many institutional traders do you know will hit the ask hard enough to gap the SPX, after having several hours in which they could have purchased the shares for a lower price?

In the end, unless you’re trading it, it’s just noise. Not to mention that the phenomenon of the PPT is practically a quaint notion, as in, most likely it exists. How active they are and they reimbursed for losses are the salient qs.
Danny all good points. To play the devil’s advocate – the day trading in the past few months seem to have significantly increased including the activities by triple levered ETFs as compared to 2008. So normally what would have been considered as a big move may not be so when lot of these traders move in unison to cover their shorts. We got close to 920 (922). Lot of traders knew that 920 was a next support area and most of them are getting more and more averse to keep anything open overnight.
So when you put all these together, can’t you get a big 10 pt move in 10 mts? Granted there is some program trading activity also going on but I don’t know how much of that could be attributed to PPT explicitly given that those same programs are bouncing off similar support levels as the smart day traders.
Stocks, most estimates I’ve seen have the big ass banks and brokerages, funds, and hedgies constituting 80%+ of daily volume.
I’m wondering what evidence there is that daytrading has increased over the past few months?
I’m not attributing anything to the PPT. I’m attributing it to large (formerly) investment banks who are playing with taxpayer funded bailout money.
