The swine trade does seem far fetched. Modern day public health, quarantine measures, and health care in general are orders of magnitudes better than what existed in 1918. And never discount the effects of trench warfare during WW1. Sanitation and band aids played a distant second.
On a random thought if we did have some crazy influenza – unemployment numbers would go down and per capita productivity would skyrocket.
Not to sound like a total dick, the world has an excess of manpower and little need for it. With every passing year compute power, automation, and technological advances render extra people meaningless in terms of production. The only thing it would do is curb consumption, but that’s already playing out.
