Go Eat Some Baked Potatoes

I just finished my 5th round of Christmas shopping, this time at Macy’s.

Everything was marked down 50%, with an extra 20% off, providing shoppers use their stupid credit cards. In the past, I was accustomed to long lines and stupid people at the registers. However, tonight, the lines were short, the cash slaves were smart (probably former Goldman Sachs traders) and the mood was grim.

But nothing beats the depressed nature of TJ Maxx. I went there a few weeks ago and was fucking astonished at what the cash slave said to me, and I quote: “sign up for a TJ Maxx credit card and get a free 2 liter bottle of Coke.”

I couldn’t resist the opportunity to zing her; I shot back: “Are you kidding me?” I continued: “You have no idea how bad it is out there. People are losing their jobs and you’re nuts for offering me 2 liter sodas.”

Shortly thereafter, I was escorted out of the store by Mrs. Fly, who was somewhat embarrassed by my outburst, to say the least.

How does this pertain to the stock market?

Fuck you. How about that?

Dude, it’s like 12:30 am and we have like 2 weeks left in the trading year. Do you think I want to spend my time giving stock picks, in a stupid tape? Please.

Everything is stupid anyway, with moronic red nosed clowns manning the trading turrets, at major shithole banks.. Here a bottom, there a bottom, everywhere a bottom—bottom.

Anyway, I am a huge believer in starting the new year with new ideas, which will lead to quick success. If you start the new year with a bad streak, it can become an albatross around your neck all year. Over the next two weeks, I will unveil my strategy for 2009, along with useless predictions, which is always fun. Furthermore, I will award the “Asshat of the Year Award.” If you recall, last years winner was Angelo Mozillo, deservedly so. Just so you know, I already have a winner in mind. None of you will ever guess who he is.

As for tomorrow:

It’s options expiration, so anything goes. Keep in mind, the bears are weak and old. They do not like to hold shorts over the weekend, since the God damned government likes to cut deals on Sunday night. Into any morning strength, I may slap on a few upside trades, possibly in TNA or FAS.

Or, maybe I’ll just do nothing and eat sandwiches all day long. You’ll just have to tune in to find out what “The Fly” is up to.

can you say if it isn’t Cramer and if it isn’t why not (as it could a case of stealing the prize from his deserving hands).

My wife does not believe we are in a recession. She thinks everyone is rich, which is partly true where i live.

However, I saw one of KIM mall centers, and 5 stores were in liquidation.

Fly, is Cramer your asshat of the year? You should create a blog titled Name All Of Cramer’s Asshat Calls just for shits and giggles. It would be fun to reminisce over all the stuipid things he said.

    Interesting;
The BOJ lowered rates to .1% about an hour ago with little immediate effect on the markets. Japan economy is actually fucked as the conditions are much worse than the 90’s. At least the 90’s had a growing Asia and the US that was able to buttress some of the domestic weakness.

    This time:

The US trade deficit is supposed to fall from $750 billion to $282 billion which is a massive readjustment that the rest of the world is going to experience. So Japan will ahve to either find other markets or really stoke its economy to generate internal demand.

The US external deficit will be easily funded if it falls to $280 bill.

The Japanese just don’t realize h=ow massive they will have to monetize. same with the Chinese, although i actually think they get it.

    Chart addict:

i do trust her actually, I’m just bullshiting around with that kinda stuff. She is a little spend thrift though i must say although i don’t blame that sickness on her. She was made ill living in NYC:-)

NYC is a spending trap for any gal. There’s all this shit going on under the undergrowth such as sample sales that are 75% off (i used to be told). But the 75% off would be off a zillion, billion dollars and it was friggen expensive anyway.:-)

Wifey used to count that as a saving 🙂 Like well it wasn’t full retail so i saved money, right?

I love her dearly though. it’s just NYC sickness.

    yea fly…

Japan is totally fucked… They have to start doing some serious unsterilized intervention on a massive scale, but they’re scared deer in front of headlights.

I really don’t think they get it. Japan’s only way to get out of this is to monetize through unsterilized intervention.

For those that don’t understand it what unsterilized means..

Normally when central banks intervene in the FX market they go and buy or sell their currency against the US dollar and then sweep the excess funds or the add the missing pile of intervention money through domestic (permanent) repos or reverse repos.

In an unsterilized intervention The BOJ would simply go out sell Yen against US dollars and leave the excess funds in the money market without sweeping it out. The net effect is an add to the money supply- monetization through currency intervention.

    ——–

Read a really good report by the head of strategy at CS yesterday.

He says that in order for the central banks around the world to have any effect they need to get 3 month libor or its equivalent down to zero before the market begins to take note and accumulate assets.

Devil dog is wrong about the so-called depression of 1873 to 1896. There wasn’t any depression. There were panics as there always were in that period but there was no great depression. In fact the opposite was true.

There was never ANY depression from 1873 to 1896. That is just bullshit. There was a period of adjustment from the time of the Civil war when the US moved off specie and used the greenback and in 1879 went back to the gold standard.

However there was never a time of depression. There were panics but NO long term depression.

    excerpt

Nonetheless, The Australian Financial Review seriously argued (14 September 1998, p. 38) that the period 1870-90 was a deflationary one in the US and that it was ?excess capacity? that drove prices down while ?production boomed? [!]

It evidently did not occur to the author that booming output is incompatible with ?excess capacity?. Moreover, he then admitted that the fall in prices was caused not by a monetary contraction, i.e., genuine deflation, but by increasing investment ? thus demonstrating how rife confusion is on this subject. As Friedman and Schwartz discovered

Finally the price level fell to half its initial level in the course of less than fifteen years and, at the same time, economic growth proceeded at a rapid rate. The phenomenon was the seeded of controversy about the monetary arrangements that was destined to plague the following decades; the other was a vigorous stage in the continued economic expansion that was destined to raise the United States to the first among the nations of the world. And their coincidence casts serious doubts on the validity of the now widely held view that secular price deflation and rapid economic growth are incompatible. (Milton Friedman and Anna J. Schwartz, A Monetary History of the United States 1867?1960, Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1971, p.15).

What is obviously not understood is that falling prices due to increased productivity benefits everyone by spreading the fruits of increased investment. Attempts to stabilise purchasing power of the monetary unit blocks this process, denying to many rises in real income they would have otherwise enjoyed.

The US went through and amazing period of falling prices rising productivity and higher living standards through the time the Dog says the US went through a great depression. It is utter nonsense.
