First Solar’s Costs Have Fallen Faster Than Chinese Competition
First Solars panels, which are manufactured using a cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) based thin-film technology, for a long time were the lowest cost panels in the industry. However, a precipitous decline in the prices of Chinese panels, which was brought about by a supply glut as well as lower raw material prices, threatened First Solar’s position over the last two years or so.
However, last quarter, the company took some significant strides in reducing its core panel manufacturing costs (excluding freight, recycling and warranty charges)by around 12% sequentially to $0.49 per watt, which is now the lowest in the solar industry.
This also happens to be the largest quarterly cost reduction that the company has achieved in the last six years. In comparison, Yingli Green Energy (NYSE:YGE), China’s largest panel manufacturer, had core manufacturing costs of more than $0.53 per watt during Q3 2013. The cost reductions are expected to be strong going forward as well. Based on data from the company’s analyst day presentation, management expects total cost per watt to fall by as much as 21% by 2015.

woj when I analyze the FSLR run on a daily chart since this summer I see this pocket.
How valid is it? I don’t know. I’m the student here! I tried to take down a starter position on JAN 60s but was a few seconds after 1:00PM and missed out.

The OA trade is Jan 26’s with a target of 28. He’s in at 0.66 – should be able to get them on the dip today/tomorrow for .60 or less.

My TWTR spread looks to be paying off nicely – a good risk/reward.
I was going to go with you on it but when I looked it was already gnats pubic hair from $75. Just decided to stick with my TSLA full retard calls which are paying off nicely up 90% so far but could have been alot better had I sold at $158 this morning when they were at 170%. You are correct Jack. I bought @29.16 on Thursday. You liked LNG on the small hourly green candle right after the red doji. Then she took off for you, great call. Yours never looked back, I had to sit out a pull back. I just dropped Yoku off @ 31.43. 7.68% in a week, good enough to cover most of Christmas. 😉
Hey Granpa – we’ve got prior highs of 32.08 back in March ’12 and recent highs of 31.85. Above that, I see the next stop around the $34 range. That is my target, on my Jan 31’s, assuming we can push through the prior highs with strength. Holding stock, you could potentially wait it out while it attempts to push through these highs – my options expire, so if it doesn’t look like it’ll get through $32 fairly easily, I might look for a quick exit to lock in gains.
That’s how I see it – hope that helps!
