Korea’s Kim Jong Un. Speaking from the White House, South Korea’s National Security Office head Chung Eui-yon described the contents of the letter saying the North’s leader “expressed eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.”
“Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. He understands that the routine joint military exercises in the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue,” Chung added.
“President Trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet him to achieve permanent denuclearization.”
Following Chung’s statement, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed Trump’s acceptance of the meeting.
“We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain,” Sanders said in a statement.
The announcement of the invitation comes hours after South Korean envoys met with U.S. officials at the White House to discuss an unprecedented meeting with Kim Jong Un.
Chung and National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon met with U.S. National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and officials from the U.S. Treasury.
