Obama was as eloquent and sharp as a person could be, politics aside. The problem with America isn’t a President, it’s the fact that we have a culture that is degenerate, from the top down.

The fact that Obama had great abilities did not make him a leader. For whatever reason, he followed. He built, but refused to spend, political capital (with the exception of the Iran agreement) in any significant way.

I think ferd is correct. A great leader is needed, and Obama had the skills and goodwill to get it done. If he had taken on Financial Reform instead of Health Care, he could have pulled Schumer and the Congress kicking and screaming with him. Instead he waited for the Repubs to take back the House to provide the cover resistance to reform that he needed. Also, he should have let Geitner go as soon as he found out that his Treasury Secretary didn’t pay his taxes.

Firstly, there have always been nuts …and there always will be nuts. But I agree with Fly. A culture which is unified around tolerance of the views and behaviors of others (“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”) is less likely to grow this particular kind of nut. American symbols that unify us need to be made to mean liberty, rather than perpetual war against people we do not understand. Leadership matters, but sadly, too many leaders, have chosen the easy route of identity politics, fear and division.

My gf lives in Las Vegas she’s pretty shook up. I go to Vegas all the time. This is fucked. They say that guy was firing from 1000′ away. Sounds like he had some crazy weapons. What a tragedy.
1,000 ft shots are not that difficult. I mean a newbie isn’t going to pull it off, but anyone with anything more than cursory training should be able to put lead on target from that distance especially when the target area is jammed pack. That’s where the saying “fish in a barrel” comes from.
