GET IN HERE RUBES FOR A LITTLE CULTURE

I’ll be heading out for a nice long day of shopping. After that, why, I might whip up a few dry martinis and then finish off that new show Ozark’s. I’m glad I stumbled across that show, to remind me to never travel to that part of the country.

On the music front, I’m just about an expert on early jazz and 1920-1930s ‘dancing orchestra’ (Al Bowlly, Ted Lewis, Ray Noble, Leo Reisman etc) music and have been exploring the wondrous world of Bossa Nova — a Brazilian form of music that intermingled with jazz and blew up in America — circa 1960s. Even Frank ‘never waited on a line during his entire life’ Sinatra got into it — making an entire album with Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Still, out of all the songs and artists from that era, saxophone playing Stan Getz is my favorite.

In 1963, he released Jazz Samba and it reached #1 on the charts, selling 500,000 records in a year and a half. I love exploring things that were popular in the past and trying to understand what was special about them. If you listen to the entirety of this album, Jazz Samba, it’s easy to understand why. It’s timeless and will be appreciated forever.

I’ve known about Getz for maybe 5 years now and have played his stuff here before. For those of you who weren’t paying attention, here’s the album.

On the literary front, I recently completed all of the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who is probably my favorite author. I read all of his novels and short stories and have a great appreciation for this prose. Fun fact, when he died, The Great Gatsby had to be warehoused due to lack of demand. Now he sells more books per year then he did during his entire career as an author. Isn’t that fucked?

On my night table now is Anna Karenina, a half read masterpiece about NYC named “Gotham”, an Einstein biography and a book about English, Irish and Scottish castles.

    Great pick, Mr. Fly.

I had the great pleasure to break bread many times with Stan Getz back in the early 90’s, just before his liver cancer (that was in remission for many years) returned and ultimately took his life.

He had just released the album Apasionado, which Herb Alpert arranged and produced. Herb and Stan were very close, and Herb had the endless resources (Herb is a billionaire, I turned Herb on to tech early (’94), got him to load up on AOL stock, and was there with him when he IPO’d VIXEL Corp and was also an entry-level VC guy in BRCM–not to mention making billions with A&M Records and Almo/Irving publishing in the music biz) to allow Stan to create his art freely and without the usual record company pressures.

Herb put Stan up in a house across from Zuma beach in Malibu, where Stan had a great view of the girls on the beach. He’d practice that tenor sax when I was around and it was as magical as it sounds on his great recordings. It gave me goose bumps. it sounded that amazing.

Uncle Stanley was one cool cat, he was all about jazz and jazz was all about him, and that will always will be.

Try some William Saroyan. He’s been accused of being sentimental, but that’s only because most literary critics are gay.

Absolutely. People generally listen to what they grew up listening to. Also all innovation comes from modern genres. The most prestigious music schools out there teach at least some introductory to modern music. Especially hip hop cuz you have to at least be aware of modern recording techniques.

      Fuck no.
Late 60’s-70’s early 80’s rock is going to be timeless however. Especially considering the acid and lsd soaked kids that created all that music sans computer generated sounds and pitch corrected voice.

Please ‘scuse me whilst I retreat to yon listening room and dial up some Guess Who and ice it with some Hair band or another. Motley Crue will probably suffice.

Best use of a wah pedal ever rendered by Kurt Winter of the Guess Who on Pain Train. Volume level…11

Ever read any science fiction? Some of Asimov’s robot tales are prescient to say the least considering the AI undercurrent of today.
The Foundation trilogy carries a kernel of truth also. Humanity basically blowing itself up and having to start over every millennia or so.
With the apeshit crap going on these days…one has to wonder.
Many are disconnected from reality in a serious way.

Did you know that Einstein wasn’t particularly good at math; but Mrs. Einstein was brilliant?

As a counterbalance to the typical fawning Einstein biography, read “The Other Einstein” which chronicles his wife’s journey of discovery culminating in the revelation that SHE had (the general theory) while waiting on a train platform. Her husband gave her zero credit and dumped her once he became a celebrity.

Somewhat of a misnomer. According to the biography written by Walter Isaac, Einstein was very proficient at math and somewhat of a joke to suggest he ‘failed’ math class in college.

He had 4 students in his Phd course and graded the lowest because his theories were unconventional, but correct.

His wife helped, but didn’t do all of his work. He had many helpers. One thing of note, Einstein’s greatest achievements was in his ability to philosophize theory, not math. It was his imagination that made him special.

“Einstein’s greatest achievements was in his ability to philosophize theory, not math. It was his imagination that made him special.”

Indeed, but if his crowning achievement, the general theory, was imagined by his wife, not him, this should also be acknowledged. Not sure where the truth lies, but in all things multiple sources should be accessed.

IMO, the most important words that Einstein spoke were ‘..I do not attribute my success to any inherit genius, but to dogged enthusiasm for my work.’ …such words give hope to all of us. Every child should learn these words when studying this icon of genius.

I dont mean to belittle Einsteins accomplishment re Relativity Theory; however, as it is with any research, the critical ideas were around for the previous decade (1895 – 1905). Einstein simply made them work. Lorentz and Poincare contributions are forgotten but influenced Einstein greatly. There are many others who made major contributions before and after Einstein yet are not mentioned or credited.
