I feel terrible for Gov. Pence; how could he, an evangelical Christian legislator, have ever expected that the policies he pursued in Indiana and has discussed as VP elect would have any impact on real people that exist outside the Bible?
Or that fictional characters are played by real people now faced with the possibility that the Constitutional rights they have so slowly won over the last 240 years might be swept away by a legislative majority?
Trump and Spence are not racist because they are white. They are racist because they have said and done things and recently hired people who are themselves avowedly racist.
They own that.
And in the real world that both men will now have to step into, there are at least a hundred million people appalled by their rhetoric and what it might mean if that rhetoric makes its way into legislation.
They did not yell fire in the theatre and they have the right to call anyone out, just like the rest of us have to stand by while Nazis march wherever they’re marching next.
I for one am glad that the administration feels threatened by Broadway; and, I’m hopeful that it will continue to tweet its outrage instead of passing legislation curtailing the rights of people who work on Broadway and beyond.
