The Istanbul Ataturk International Airport is taken over by the military. Flights have been halted.
A statement out of the government suggests something is awry and it doesn’t look good for the Erdogan clan.
“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said in comments broadcast on NTV, a private television channel. “The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.”
Gunshots and low flying jets have been reported throughout the capital.
UPDATE: Turkey’s military has claimed the coup was successful and they’re in control of the country.
