Obama Enlists Goldman, Google and Others to Help Finance Refugees, Who Are Mostly Military Aged Men, Settle in America

Such kind hearts.

Goldman is gonna teach them English. Google will teach them tech. Airbnb will give them places to stay. Chobani will give them sustenance.

In return, one of these men might blow up one of their buildings.

The companies have pledged to fund programs that assist refugees and aid workers directly. Airbnb Inc., for example, will donate credits for relief workers to book housing through its site. Yogurt maker Chobani, based in upstate New York, has pledged to hire additional resettled refugees.

Goldman Sachs, which has already contributed $4.5 million in response to the crisis, says it will underwrite programs to help refugees learn English and gain employment skills. Alphabet’s Google will provide consulting and technology to nonprofits the company says will help more than 1 million refugees worldwide access information and education this year.

“We are thrilled to be part of this partnership, and to see the White House’s continued leadership in this area,” Roya Soleimani, a spokeswoman for Google, said in an e-mail.

The corporate commitments may give the president some leverage as he pushes other countries to increase their refugee commitments by this fall. Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, said on a conference call Thursday that the UN received just $11 billion of $20 billion it requested for refugee assistance in 2015, forcing the organization to cut rations of food and medicine. Out of 1.2 million refugees that need to be resettled, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has only found homes for 110,000, Power said.

“That’s just not enough,” she said.

Obama is expected to begin lobbying for increased refugee aid in person next week at a NATO summit in Warsaw. According to the White House, Obama wants to increase global financing for refugees by 30 percent, double the amount spent to resettle refugees, and increase the number of refugees in school and in work by 1 million.

Insanity.

Or maybe one of them or one of their kids will start a company like one we have that was started by the son of a Syrian immigrant– you know, the company named AAPL.

That being said, I agree with Bernie that we need to decide how many people and which people we have room for, in the U.S.. Open borders don’t make sense.

Yep. Sad that Obama and these companies are willing to help the refugees, but don’t give a crap about laid-off coal miners in WV.

Narrative was 2 years ago this was intended. Red-line against assad was setup. Magically there are millions of displaced syrians. It’s a forced mixing. Pretty easy but everyone continues to be surprised at each advancement. Which baffles. Me

    Insanity

Accenture, Airbnb, Chobani, Coursera, Goldman Sachs, Google, HP, IBM, JPMorgan Chase & Co., LinkedIn, Microsoft, Mastercard, UPS, TripAdvisor, and Western Union see it differently.

    Settle in America

The program will do that, in part, but it is aimed at refugees in many places: those in camps in frontline countries; those resettled in new countries; and those resettling in the US. The focus of the program is to help with education, employabiity, and any other needs that will help refugees attain self-reliance.

The people in the region can learn about the US and the West from ISIS and other radical groups, or it can learn about it from letters sent back by family or former neighbors now resettled in the West.

Will all the free shit also be available for Americans?

Your free shit is that you and your family didn’t have to flee for your lives as your home and town were destroyed. You didn’t have to pare your belongings down to what you could grab quickly, and carry with you, and protect from other desperate people. You don’t face the real likelihood that it will be several years before you have a semi-permanent home again.

All that, and you are whinging about some trinkets like a jealous 5-yr old who didn’t get as many stickers at the dentist as your 6-yr old sister did.

If you were in that age range, I’d just consider you spoiled and jealous. Assuming, because you post here, that you are an adult, I have to add “heartless” to the description.

There are other countries closer to these refugees that can better help them, alternatively we can stop trying to overthrow Assad which is what is causing the problem anyway. We routinely disadvantaged our people in favor of foreigners. We have hurt our working classes by making labor very cheap labor and we disadvantage our kids by increasing competition for schools and jobs.

I think most people are worried that we have had way too much immigration and it’s hurting the country. Time to slow it down. We need to immigrants to become Americans, that takes time.

Other countries closer? They are overwhelmed. Part of what the Obama program is doing is directing more resources to those areas.

We routinely disadvantaged our people in favor of foreigners.
Broad. No evidence presented. I can’t debate smoke.

We have hurt our working classes by making labor very cheap labor
Again, too broad and no evidence. Stop blowing smoke.

we disadvantage our kids by increasing competition for schools and jobs
Really? We’ve lost the ability to build schools and start businesses? Our kids can’t handle competition? Chin up, man. Put the white flag away.

Trying to read through the smoke, it looks like you are sold on a couple ideas, one economic and one cultural.

The economic idea is that immigration depresses wages and employment for native workers. The overall body of research on the topic finds that immigration has a positive effect on employment and a very slight positive effect on overall wages. There are negative effects on wages for workers with the least education. I submit that, if we want to address the problem of low earnings for US-born high-school dropouts, we try something far more direct than adjusting immigration policy.

The cultural argument is that change is happening too quickly, and we have too many immigrants who have not been in the country long enough to assimilate. That’s a mostly objective argument, so any discussion is more opinion than fact.

My opinion is this: the heated debate about immigration over the last 5-7 years has not been driven by a sudden increase in numbers (researchers find that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the US has actually declined over that period), and so likely is driven primarily by economic distress (from the financial crisis, globalization, etc) and secondarily by fears of terrorism.

Okay, now I see where conservatives stand:
    1) The US governement is not providing enough for it’s neediest citizenes
    2) The US governement provides too much for it’s neediest citizens
Now I see why they are so grumpy all the time.
