U.S. Government Just Made America Safe Again; Border Protection to Include Social Media Inquiries

We just won the war against migrants trying to attack these great lands. The Obama administration will now demand to know the Facebook and Twitter accounts of all migrants entering this country. As we speak, the leaders of ISIS are scratching their flea infested heads, wondering how they’re going to get around this new layer of border security.

Fuck the wall. We have border patrol agents ready to ask migrants their snapchat handles.

The US government is proposing making social media accounts part of the visa screening process for entry into the country.

US Customs and Border Protection’s proposed change would add a line on both the online and paper forms of the visa application form that visitors to the US must fill out if they do not have a visa and are planning on staying for up to 90 days.

The following question would be added to both the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta) and I-94W forms: “Please enter information associated with your online presence—Provider/Platform—Social media identifier.”

The information will be optional, for now, but the proposed change published by the US Federal Register states that “collecting social media data will enhance the existing investigative process and provide Department of Homeland Security (DHS) greater clarity and visibility to possible nefarious activity and connections by providing an additional tool set which analysts and investigators may use to better analyze and investigate the case.”

The proposal is currently under consultation, with US government taking comments until 22 August.

We truly have mentally ill people making decisions for us.

Believe it or not, the State Department was actually banned from looking at prospective entrant’s social media accounts. I guess they thought they would be violating their privacy. You see, we follow Marquess of Queensberry Rules because we are civilized and polite.

Why not? If they offer some information that can help find a problem, then use it.

I agree. It won’t hurt anything and may help, for all we know.

Dumbest thing I have read in weeks. So all prospective “martyrs” can create two Facebook pages, one with bomb-making instructions and one with pics of puppies and kittens. Your tax dollars at work, we are being governed by baboons.

Agreed, Maven. BTW much of the population believes the Internet is the real world, and thus any character you play on the Internet is equivalent to real world action. “it’s called acting” is not a concept understood to many these days.

Eventuality this mentality may mean actors are legally responsible for actions of the characters the play on stage and in movies. Sounds farfetched, but look where we are going…

Lack of response can sometimes give more information than a positive response.

      Situation 1:
The US does not ask about social accounts. They find a social account that is borderline supportive of terrorist agendas, but perhaps not terrorist acts, and perhaps no info leading to them suspecting that the account holder would commit a terrorist act.

      Situation 2:
Same as situation 1, except that the US does not ask about social accounts and the account holder does not reveal their account.

A woman once told me a story about her father, who ran a small business. The job application asked applicants if they had ever been arrested. Applicants who had been arrested almost never checked “yes”.

He changed the application and included a page that had HONESTY TEST in large type across the top. When he put the arrest question in that section, many more applicants answered “yes”.

The point? We might be surprised at what we learn. It is worth try.

I don’t expect terrorists to reveal that their handle on their equivalent of twitter is @Makingadeliveryfromisis, but there are still potential payoffs For example, travelers who sympathize with terrorists, but would never commit terrorist acts themselves, could provide leads that allow DHS to identify sites where ISIS recruiters operate. Some terrorists aren’t very bright, so they might occasionally reveal something that helps prevent a future attack. ISIS likes to uses dimwitted hotheads in roles where death is likely — leading a charge into a city in Iraq or Syria, for example, or strapping on a suicide vest.
