This movie made me want to kill Russians. Made during the height of the cold war, young Fly, running about the sewers of Brooklyn, was infuriated when he saw this movie. The fucking Russians, with the explicit support of certain men of a latin persuasion, invaded America and took our great freedoms away. I could not believe what I was seeing. Thank heavens the Wolverines were around to kill all of the invaders.
Also, and I found this to be supremely interesting, at the time this was rated as the ‘Most Violent Film Ever’, by Guinness Book of World Records. In comparison to the depravity shown in theaters today, Red Dawn is like a Saturday morning cartoon.
This was a huge commercial success and for good reason. It makes you want to kill Russians and drink cups of hot blood out from the dying body of deer.

Lol great flick! When Charlie still looked innocent!
Good social analysis with the ‘Most Violent Film Ever’ perspective.
To give you an idea how standards have changed, if a movie was made today called “Sharia Dawn” with basically the same plot line, it would be boycotted, denounce, if it was even made.
Sharia Dawn is where they swim across the Rio Grande instead of parachuting in.
“Avenge me! Aveeennge meeee!!!”
Great cheesy flick. Watched The Basketball Diaries last night.. another good one
Blood was rarely shown in 80s movies (people would just grip their chests and keel over, or jump if their was an explosion), but is very common nowadays.
Red Dawn has an interesting connection to The Revenant……
The last Rambo movie was insane amounts of blood and humans being liquified from gun fire.
I also remember as a kid after seeing this movie looking up at the sky and giving them the finger as a kid after reading about them having satellites with excellent resolution.
Should be in Guinness for dumbest plan for invading a major power.
I much prefer The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! It was intentionally funny.
The left HATED this movie. That was the impetus behind the “too violent” reaction. John Milius was perhaps the lone wingnut in Hollywood. Nonetheless, this movie is a minor masterpiece for the soundtrack alone. The detail regarding the communist bloc equipment and tactics is also much to be admired.
Comrade, we must secure the parking lot of the rural Colorado High School or the invasion will fail.
