We’ve become a nation of lumberjacks and home flippers, apparently. HD and LOW have been two of the few retail outlets that have managed to perform, consistently without pause.
The one common denominator: you can’t order lumber, at least not efficiently on Amazon. Moreover, contractors rather drop dead than order a hammer online.
Home improvement stores are the last frontier in retail left unscathed by the Amazon scourge. I’m sure J. Bezos, as we speak, is trying to find a way to hurt the brick and mortar retailer.

Good points – the shit one buys at Home Depot is much better looked at and visually inspected / double checked. Plus half those guys are out on jobs where they are driving around anyway.

Day laborers hang out at Home Depots in just about every city I’ve been to. Not all Home Depots in each city, but there are certain Home Depots in each city that work well for day laborers.
To list a few cities I’ve seen them hanging out in the parking lot: Las Vegas, San Diego, Denver, San Antonio, Wash DC area, Chicago.
I love HD. I spend all my drug money there. HD is much better than LOW imo. More expert help.
Saying HD has more expert help than LOW is like saying Budweiser is a far superior lager to Coors. They’re both garbage. If you want a good lager, you go to Germany. If you want good help, you go to Ace.
eh… Ace isn’t that great and has way less inventory. I’ve been to them all, a lot.
HD > LOW is a fact
Ace stores vary because they are independently owned. I’ve seen crappy ones and I’ve seen ones that blow the shutters off any big box. So it depends on your location. Where I’m at Ace is a no-brainer.
And I’ll never forget the time I went to HD for a simple pipe clamp and they didn’t carry my size. Basic homeowner stuff, but they didn’t stock it. I was able to find it at the dusty shoebox-sized Do It Best down the street, however.
